Opinion: Should Arsenal be worried about Gyokeres poor international form?

Viktor Gyokeres has not scored a goal in seven consecutive games for club and country, a situation that is beginning to raise concerns for Arsenal. Typically, players struggling with form look forward to national team duties as an opportunity to refresh themselves and regain confidence, but Gyokeres has yet to find the net for the Sweden national team since joining the Gunners.

Before his move to Arsenal, Gyokeres had been prolific for Sweden, scoring nine goals in six appearances during his final matches as a Sporting Club player. His sudden goal drought, both for club and country, raises questions about his adjustment to life in North London and whether his previous form can be replicated at the highest level.

Adjustment Challenges at Arsenal

It is widely understood that adapting to a new team, league, and style of play can take time, and Gyokeres may be experiencing this transition. Nonetheless, the sharp contrast between his earlier performances for Sweden and his current struggles is notable. When signing a player who had achieved such remarkable success, there is always a concern that they may have been at their peak at their previous club. Arsenal were aware of Gyokeres’ reputation as a natural poacher who had been exceptional in front of goal, and they expected him to continue scoring regularly. The current drought suggests that the adjustment period is proving more challenging than anticipated.

Implications for Club and Country

The situation is particularly troubling as Gyokeres faces the possibility of missing out on the World Cup with Sweden due to his inability to score. If a player who previously netted consistently for his national team cannot perform at that level after moving to Arsenal, it may indicate that his potential has yet to fully materialise in the Premier League. This raises concerns for the club, which relies on forwards to provide consistent goal-scoring output.

Arsenal may need to consider strategies to help Gyokeres regain his confidence and scoring touch, both for the club and for his national team. While patience is often required when integrating a new player, the stark decline in form compared to his previous achievements is a clear cause for concern. Ensuring that he adapts successfully could be crucial not only for his individual development but also for Arsenal’s ambitions this season.

  1. So many repetitive Gyokeres posts on Just Arsenal. What’s the matter are some getting nervous that he won’t be the pin up goal machine that was needed? I’m not exactly a fan but I think that he will compensate for his lack of goals by drawing away and keeping opposition defenders busy. At the same time Arteta shouldn’t always allow him to soldier on for the full 90 minutes, especially when he has been ineffective . There are other available options on the bench.

  2. Let’s compare Gyokeres’ and Haaland’s performance in their last four matches, in EPL and internationally

Even if we ignore their goal productivity, it’s obvious that Gyokeres has lost too many duels and balls as compared to Haaland

Gyokeres was supposed to at least outpace, outmuscle or outjump the opposing CBs consistently, but he can’t do this on weekly basis despite having been supported by his Swedish compatriots

He must excel in one of the abovementioned aspects if he wants to heavily influence the game as Haaland has been doing

Arsenal didn’t seem to have done their due-dilligence before signing him

    1. To be fair, there weren’t any “perfect” options in the market. I believe the club will try to find a better centre forward in a season or two. Maybe Sesko will be that player in a couple of seasons- would be nice to do a reverse RVP if Sesko comes good. Maybe it will be someone else. But I don’t see Gyok/Havertz being nothing more than back up in a year or two.

      1. No CF is perfect, but Arsenal could’ve signed the younger Sesko, Woltemade or Aghehowa if they were willing to pay a bit more. At least they’re younger and taller

I also believe Arsenal will look for a new CF next summer, if Gyokeres is still highly inconsistent by then

        1. Well, he may be struggling, yes, but I find Sesko and Woltermade to be disastrous in comparison. Let’s hope he’s going to improve it in the next outing.

        2. Woltemade. We should have signed Toons desperate late 5th choice option ahead of them in stead of Gyokeres?

          Got any more good idea’s?

  3. It’s still early days so I’m prepared to give him time to adapt to the premier league but I must admit I wasn’t over the moon with his signing, the likes of Nunez and Viera spring to mind when you think of big money buys from Portugal who flopped, let’s be honest it’s a bang average league.

  4. Totally agree with what is said about his pace , duel and ball posession prowess etc. We have heard too ‘it’s still early’ too many times.
It is concerning, not so much about the goal drought !

  5. Could it be that Gyokeres is just not fully fit? This is someone who didn’t have a proper pre season for reasons we all know. In addition,he’s adapting to a new league and new tactics. His compatriot,Isak, is not doing well for Liverpool either-he too didn’t have a pre-season. Which reminds of Merino & Calafiori. Both of them didn’t have a pre-season when they joined and struggled a bit in the beginning. They are looking much better now.

It’s a shame that Havertz got injured so early. He would have taken some of the pressure, minutes and spotlight off of Gyokeres. I believe Gyokeres will do much better once the big German returns. In some marches,Havertz can start, with Gyok coming on later a la Martinelli. His directness could be a weapon against tired defenses .

Gyok and Havertz could even play together sometimes. Havertz’s superior hold up and link up play around the box could massively help Gyokeres.

  6. Viktor has a good work ethic and keeps the cb´s busy
the goals will come evt. he has a strong carachter..

  7. Although it’s not ideal that Gyokeres isn’t scoring regularly so far, it’s still early as far as I’m concerned.

And just to say that our great club legend that is a certain Thierry Henry didn’t make the fastest start to his Arsenal career either. But he didn’t do to bad did he.

And just to add, that Gyokeres is nowhere near the player that Henry was, and to be fair he never will be. But if he can be half as good, we’ll have a good player on our hands. 👍

  8. Please let us all give Gyokeres time to adapt to the premier league. I believe it will work out well for both club and country.

  9. Well, he may be struggling, yes, but I find Sesko and Woltermade to be disastrous in comparison. Time heals, time clarifies. Soon, this guy will be the goal machine that we knew!

  10. Yes, he is struggling but who is doing better than him? Joao Pedro, Ekitike, Isak, Woltermade, Sesko and all the new guys have the same goals or less. It’s probably too soon to judge them. In fact, I think we might see the real Gyokeres next seasons… even Havertz took a whole season before he could gel and become a trusted member of the team. Admittedly, it’s not exactly the same since Havertz did not have the goodwill of the fans. Nonetheless, it’s early to give up on big Gyoko!

  11. The ball is now in the court of Gyokeres. If he has the talent that we’ve not seen so far, let him silence his critiques starting from Fulham this Saturday. He’s however toiling fighting combating .. .are not enough. Only goals (even not pens) could make doubters prove wrong. Is adaptation the problem even with Sweden? Gyokeres needs loads of resilience and psychological strength to come out of this abyss he’s experiencing at club and country level.
