Gabriel Martinelli coming off injured against Newcastle

Opinion: Tzolis pre-season form means Martinelli is set for another bench role

Gabriel Martinelli produced his finest performances for Arsenal during the 2022/2023 season, but since that campaign his form has steadily declined.

Expectations were high that he would establish himself ahead of Leandro Trossard last season. Instead, the Belgian kept him out of the starting line-up for long periods, while the Brazilian managed just one goal in 30 league appearances.

Martinelli Faces Increasing Competition

That return has done little to strengthen his position within the squad. It has also made it far more difficult for potential suitors to show serious interest in securing his signature during the current transfer window.

Arsenal had reportedly hoped to move him on this summer, but with limited interest emerging, the club now appears likely to keep him for another season. Even so, there is a growing possibility that he could spend much of the upcoming campaign on the bench if current performances continue.

Tzolis Impresses During Pre-Season

One of the biggest reasons for that situation is the impressive start made by Christos Tzolis since arriving at the club. The Greek star has shown encouraging form during pre-season and has demonstrated the qualities needed to operate effectively on the left wing.

If Tzolis can carry his pre-season displays into the competitive campaign, he could quickly establish himself as an important figure for Arsenal. His performances have already suggested that he is capable of making a significant contribution whenever he is selected.

Mikel Arteta has consistently shown that he rewards players on merit, with places in the starting line-up earned through performances rather than reputation. Based on what has been seen so far, Tzolis has presented a strong case to be the preferred option on the left flank.

Martinelli therefore faces a significant challenge if he is to regain his place in the team. With increased competition for attacking positions and another player producing convincing displays, he will need to improve considerably if he hopes to reclaim a regular starting role during the season ahead.

  1. Whether he finds himself benched or not, it’s called competition for places. Something that should encourage each individual to up their game if they want that regular starting place.

  2. I am a lover of Martinelli in arsenal shirt, though his goal output in the epl last season was nothing to say but it was better in ucl, I think he was the club highest goals scorer, if I am right. The arrival of Tzollis, I believed will improve him as competition for attacking places becomes competitive

  3. I am a lover of Martinelli in arsenal shirt and love his games. Though his goal output last season in the epl was nothing to say and write about but it was better in ucl, I think he was the club highest goals scorer. The arrival of Tzollis and the competitions for attacking places, I believed will improve him.

  4. .Martinelli will be 1st choice and it’s for Tzolis to win the place.. pre season friendlies mean nothing at this point

  5. I’d like to see Martinelli start against City in the Charity shield and Tzolis start against Coventry in the season opener, if he gets off to a flyer then keep him in the starting eleven and it’s down to Martinelli to give him the competition for the spot.
