Is Leandro Trossard the biggest loser in the Eberechi Eze swoop?
Charles Watts thinks so. The Arsenal expert, commenting on the Belgian who, reportedly, is yet to agree terms on a new contract, suggested that the club’s decision to part ways with Trossard in favour of Eze would make sense.
He told Sportsmole:
“(Trossard) He’s versatile, he scores goals, he sets goals up. But if it meant you could get Eze, I think it’s an acceptable sacrifice – especially with Madueke coming in, who is going to be considered quite a lot as a left-sided option.
“You’ve then got Eze if he comes in, Martinelli, Madueke… you’ve got left-sided options there, even if Trossard goes.”
While he does admit:
“I think Arsenal would be losing a very, very good player.”
Watts concedes:
“But I think what it would do to the squad, how it would change things, it would be an acceptable departure.”
Trossard: the Eze casualty?
From those comments, it’s hard to deny that Trossard could emerge as the biggest casualty of the Eze swoop.
His greatest strength lies in his versatility and goal contributions, yet Eze offers similar qualities, and arguably more flair.
Like Trossard, the Crystal Palace star is capable of playing as a No.10, out wide, or even as a false nine.
Throw Mikel Merino, Declan Rice, and Noni Madueke into the equation, and Arsenal’s attacking options become a numbers game – one Trossard might not win.
Even with 15 goal involvements last season, his tally may be dwarfed by a new-look frontline featuring a prolific striker (Gyokeres scored 54 goals last term) and Eze, who brings invention and end product.
Latest on Eze
According to Caught Offside, Arsenal are ready to offer £30 million up front for Eze, with the remaining £38 million to be paid in instalments across two years.
Talks are ongoing, but Arsenal will not rush the deal. Instead, they are open to letting Palace secure a replacement first.
Interestingly, the deal could be sweetened with Reiss Nelson included as part of the package. Or could a deal be done with Trossard?
Despite interest from Bayern Munich and several Premier League clubs, Arsenal reportedly remain ahead in the race for Eze’s signature.

our midfield does not convince me at all, I hope things change before the season start.
Yes it would make sense but I do think that will happen this summer.
But that isn’t a bad thing. Having EZE and Trossard on the bench is good. Trossard is best off the bench and is a very useful player and good finisher
But I don’t think Trossard will want to stay because of lack of playing time. There are players ahead of him
I was hoping that Martinelli would be the first to go, as his product has diminished so acutely, and we need guys who step up to the plate every week. The Prem and chamions league are no places to be carrying passengers. However if it’s to be Trossard, then that’s probably sensible too. On his day he’s brilliant but Eze is definitely a step up, more consistent and a bit younger. Good luck to LT if he goes.

Martinelli out!!!!!
Sell either one or both. As long as we can get at least one replacement in. If Arsenal were truly ambitious we’d be trying to bring into someone like Leao. Martinelli and Trossard are simply not on the levels required to win the league. I cannot watch another season of pass to Saka and pray tactics
If you lot have been watching arsenal for the past 3 seasons, you would know that Trossad is far more important than Martinelli. Martinelli should go instead, he’s too predictable and had stopped developing three seasons ago. If Eze is coming, retain Trossad and let Nelli leave
We want players who will make us get the best out of big Vik and Martineli isn’t one of them. Bring Eze in and the business will be finished. Martineli can be sold for £35-£40 because his development has stagnated.
Your first sentence is spot on but we also need the right tactics. Eze or whoever isn’t the answer on their own.
I’d definitely keep Trossard and let Martinelli go. Trossard is a good finisher and can be very effective against tired legs. Martinelli is just disappointing. Anyway, we have Madueke now so hopefully he solves the leftwing problem.
Just like he was against PSG, his poor pass that resulted in Saliba getting sent off against Bournemouth, the second yellow against City when we were on top, not a fan of Martinelli either, both should be sold to btingnin better replacements
Personally, Arsenal should try to keep Trossard. Let Martinelli go if a good offer comes in. Martinelli was good but can never achieve a world class performance with his style of play. Last season’s performance was way below average.
I want us to keep Trossard and Martinelli, and also bring in a starting winger. We need both numbers and quality. I like the idea of us having both runners and ball-to-feet players; it gives us more options to change things up a bit. But if I had to lose one of them, then Trossard is the one I’d keep due to his technical ability (and we know he’s decent coming off the bench), as I think the newcomer will have dribbling and running power, so hopefully he’d be an upgrade on Martinelli
Eze will change games, Trossard doesn’t, just a sub in my opinion, he isn’t a starter and should never be, the miss against PSG in the semis highlighted he isn’t a game changing player and never will be
Those calling for Martinelli’s exit forget the age factor as well as Martinelli’s pace. Trossard might be a better finisher but we have now got people who can do that. Martinelli’s pace is his greatest asset and with good strikers he can be very useful. His age also means that he still has a lot to learn while Trossard is truly past the age of learning. Perhaps, those who dislike Martinelli tend to overlook these issues. Obviously , Martinelli would fetch mor3e money but it would be a great blunder to sell him now!
He’s fast but rarely does it result in a difference in attacking areas. I have no qualms with his defensive contributions that’s for sure. But something does have to give if we want out LHS to improve and it’s probably going to be new personnel. As for his age, not everyone gets better as they get older. Some players do peak young and never evolve from there. So it’s not a given he will get better.
