Potential Unai Emery replacements – Julian Nagelsmann: The pros and cons

Our final article in this series of potential Unai Emery replacements looks at RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann.

Julian Nagelsmann has been hyped perhaps more than any other German coach since he became a football manager before he clocked 30. He seems to be living up to that hype and in this article, we look at why he should be considered as a candidate for the Arsenal job.

Pros

Julian Nagelsmann did a great job at Hoffenheim as he led the small club into the Champions League group stages last season. He has since moved to RB Leipzig and is building another team that is challenging for the German league title.

Nagelsmann is the latest German manager to follow in the line of Jurgen Klopp and he could just become Arsenal’s answers to his compatriot.

His current 64 per cent winning record as manager of Leipzig is one of the best around and he can make Arsenal more competitive again.

Nagelsmann is a great man-manager and seems to know how to bring the best out of his players. He did that with Andrej Kramaric who had flopped at Leicester City.

The fact he is German may help with the likes of Mustafi and Ozil.

Cons

It could be argued that the 32-year-old is overhyped, he has been a manager at the top level for three years now but has no trophy to his name.

His lack of experience outside of Germany means he would represent a significant risk for Arsenal.

His age may also affect his relationship with some of the older players in the side, David Luiz as an example.

His almost non-existent playing career could make it difficult for him to gain respect from some of the huge egos in the Arsenal team.

All this considered Nagelsmann would, without doubt, be a huge risk that could either succeed or fail disastrously. The last thing Arsenal needs right now is to be taking a risk with their next managerial appointment.

This is the 21st and final in a series of articles that I will be doing and all words are my own perception and opinion.

  1. My peak of the lot, dude is an interesting manager with a definite style of progressive football, a very good man manager, personally I rate coaches on their ability go get the best out of players available to him, this where Julian come top,Wenger was a gamble when he arrived and he turned out a huge success!Julian is my man,

  2. He’s been on my list for some time.
Hey @gotanidea it seems Ornstien got it wrong, Emery is on a 2 year deal not 3 years.

  3. Out of the managers from this excellent series of articles my favourites are:
    1. Allegri
    2. Ancelotti
    3. Benitez

Wildcards (risky managers with limited experience but could improve us):
    Naglesman
    Laurent Blanc
    Tuchel

Maureen 👎😤😢😵. This would be such an insult to Wenger that I hate the idea of him joining us. He would improve us but both Kroenke and Maureen makes me ill just thinking about it

  4. The guy worked absolute wonders @
    Hoffenheim and was more than
competitive with the likes of Bayern
and Dortmund with literally a shoe
string budget to work with. He is
without ? the best young manager in
ALL of world futbol and SHOULD be the
#1 choice for the Arsenal brass if
they decide to grab there collective
    sacks and can Emery.

The sad reality is why would such a
    brilliant and successful young
manager leave a better situation @
Leipzig to be a COMPANY man @ the
    Emirates?

  5. Nagelsman is just an overhyped coach, like tuchel and all the others that are doing well in their first or second jobs around Europe. Emery has won league’s and major trophies and according to some, he is a failure and in the same breath the same people are calling for coaches that have never coached in the prem are still very young and most not won a single trophy yet but of course they will be a success here because someone has said they are the next best thing in football. Every coach is a gamble and every coach can succeed or fail at any club. Me i would much rather put my faith in someone like Benitez over any of these fad coaches because he has vast experience and has actually achieved something in the game.

    1. Really Reggie? So what did Wenger win before he came to us and who even knew who he was?
And what did he win as soon as he came to us? The double!

      1. Wenger won Ligue 1, reached semifinal of CL and the final of Cup Winners’ Cup – all with Monaco.

He was a famous coach around Europe when he went to Arsenal. Was Bayern’s first choice, but Monaco would at the time not let him go.

Sadly, the ignorance of anything beyond Britain meant he was dubbed ‘Arsene who?’

  6. He’s my choice.
Good game plan, develops young players, and can work on a budget. He ticks all the boxes for me.

Yes he hasn’t managed a big club but this guy is the next top manager in world football.

  7. My pick of experienced managers has always been Allegri because he would sort out, once and for all, our pathetic defence. But why would he join us and could we afford him?

Julian Nagelsmann ticks a lot of the boxes apart from long term experience and trophies but he appears to know how to motivate players and get the best out of them hence his success at Hoffenheim and now Leipzig. I think he is worth a serious look but I do not think he will move before the end of the season.

  8. my perception is that until we start playing with passion and pride no coach will succeed here. The ugly player power is here to stay unless we rid ourselves of the over hyped millionaires over the top players.
Remember Arsene never gave over 30 years players a long contract, rolling contracts for 1 year. Now these dudes are playing safe to avoid injuries, no passion, no pride, no ownership for lacklustre performances, each one blaming the other and fans giving preferential treatment to players
in my opinion get rid of Socrates Kolasinac Luiz Ozil Mkhi Elneny Xhaka
even Auba, Laca and Lucas if their hearts are not for AFC
with these players we achieve nothing
so if replace them at least we can have men playing with passion
then only we can think of Julian or some new coach
When Unai asked the players to press and play a high intensity game, that is when things started going sour
