Potential Unai Emery replacements – Thomas Tuchel: The pros and cons

Thomas Tuchel is a worthy contender to be the next Arsenal manager.

Arsenal cannot afford to get it wrong again if they are forced into to naming a replacement for Unai Emery. In this latest article in our series of potential Emery replacements, we take a look at Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel is the current manager of French giants Paris St Germain, a position once held by Unai Emery.

Pros

Tuchel has had a short managerial career but it has generally been one at the very top. After cutting his teeth at Mainz 05, he then went on to manage and win trophies with Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

Tuchel has shown over the years that he is unafraid to innovate and this has brought him success at his last two clubs, His ideas can turn things around at the Emirates.

He has also been in charge of top players like Ousmane Dembele and Neymar and has always been able to build a strong relationship with them. That could come in handy with some of the huge egos at Arsenal.

The 46-year-old has a press-based footballing philosophy very similar to the man he replaced at Borussia Dortmund, Jurgen Klopp.

Cons

Tuchel had a falling out with the directors at Borussia Dortmund because he could not get his own way.

He has an overall win percentage of 54.16 which is not much better than Emery’s 53.8. In fact, his win record at PSG of 75.34% is worse than what Emery achieved, 76.3%.

Tuchel has never really cracked it on the European stage as manager with any of his sides. That doesn’t make him an upgrade on Emery who is a multiple Europa League winner.

This is the twelfth in a series of articles that I will be doing and all words are my own perception and opinion.

  1. Well better than the last two.
    At least he’s won trophies
Wanting to get his own way may not necessarily be a bad thing. It’s better than being a lacky of the owner

We can do better than Tuchel BUT I wouldn’t be against it. I’d be okay with giving him a chance

    1. @Innit
Wanting to get his way might the disqualifing factor when it comes to AFC. That part of the reason the board and management worked against AW. And why Emery is the perfect guy for them.
And if you think about any of the managers named, you can I feel very few of them are yes men, so won’t even be considered… IJS

    2. He’s won trophIES for sure.

2 of them in his career: 1 German cup, 1 French ligue with PSG

BUT you’re okay with him, but Emery’s 3 UEL wins and his treble season at PSG are worse??

Winning trophies is irrelevant for Arsenal right now. Improving players and finishing in the top 4 are the only realistic goals.
