Arsenal’s Right-Wing Talent Pipeline
One notable aspect of Arsenal’s youth development is that several of their most promising players occupy similar positions. Both Nwaneri and Dowman primarily operate on the right wing, the same area as Bukayo Saka, who is also a product of the club’s academy. Jamie Carragher has highlighted a potential challenge for Arsenal regarding this positional overlap. As quoted by Football Insider, he said, “The only problem Arsenal have got is every young player and maybe the best player all play in the same position, so you’ve got Saka, you’ve got him [Dowman] coming through, probably a few years away from being a first team regular, Nwaneri as well probably a similar sort of the position, Odegaard as well. So that’s probably the only downside, but it is fantastic for him and fantastic for the future of Arsenal.”

I’m sure it’s a problem Arsenal can live with. Obviously, the ideal is to get quality young players coming though across a whole range of positions, but that takes a lot of time and patience (and a good eye for players at an early age).
The best example, by a mile, is F C Barcelona where players from their famous La Masia academy often constitute around 50% of their first team with several others in the wider squad.
However, that kind of youth development programme hasn’t happened overnight and, indeed, was accelerated over in recent years because of the club’s dire financial position.
This is not a problem as one may think, loan out the player with strict agreements.
The loaned player could be sent to a club with built-in clauses.
One such agreements is that the loaned club will pay a minimum of £50.000 when the player missis a game and not injured.
This will not only guaranteed loaned players game time, but we could also see an increase in players wanting to go on loan.

Perhaps its never ocurred to Carragher that neither Nwaneri nor Dowman are natural wingers, inverted or otherwise, and when they are fully developed physically i expect both to gravitate towards an attacking midfield role to which they are clearly suited.While neither has blistering pace they both have the natural ability to run quickly with the ball under control which gives defenders big problems and encourages them to commit themselves, whereas, when faced with speed merchants they will invariably back off.Allanga and Martinelli are examples of pure wingers who are highly dependent on their pace and limited in terms of contol and football intelligence.

Has it even occurred to Carragher that in a few years time the likes of Odegaard may be moved on and the likes of Nwaneri and Dowman could then be ready to finally get there major chance of stating a claim for a regular place in the side. And it may not take several years either, depending how fast their development is.
