Should Arsenal give Nacho Monreal a new contract?

Everyone has been talking about whether Aaron Ramsey will sign a new extension to his Arsenal contract, but there are other Gunners that are also ending next summer like Danny Welbeck, Petr Cech and Nacho Monreal. The 33 year old Spanish left-back has been one of our most consistent players over the last few seasons, but could his age be a problem?

Nacho himself has revealed that he is already in discussions with Arsenal. “At the moment we are talking with the club,” Monreal said. I’ve always said I am really happy, I feel very happy playing for Arsenal.

“I came six years ago. I have a good relationship with them. We are in contact in any moment so don’t worry about that. I am happy here. That is the most important thing.”

“That is my idea, that is what I want,” he said. “We will see what happens but at the moment I am 32 and I will turn 33 but I feel good.

“My idea is to play in football until my body says ‘Nacho, so sorry but that’s the end’. But I think it is far [away]. I hope so.

“You never know because your body, sometimes you start with some problems, some injuries and you can’t continue giving 100 percent. But at the moment I feel good so I am not thinking of my retirement.”

So this is a difficult one. We know defenders last longer than further outfield players, and Nacho doesn’t look like he is slowing down yet, so what do you think Arsenal should do? Give him a two year deal, or a one year with an option of a second, or just bring in a younger replacement next summer?

  1. Of course we should give him a new contract if he’s still performing. We just signed a non playing nigh on 35 year old didn’t we?

  2. They better assess his forms in the next two months first

If his performance worsens, they have to replace him and I don’t think Kolasinac is enough

We don’t need to worry about Monreal, because Barcelona are thinking to get him, according to Sky Sports

  3. I think we’re right to give him a new deal, even if we are thinking about replacing him, we could still get cash if we have him under contract… Obviously I mean if we sell him 😛

I think the decision to sell will come at the end of the season, I don’t think Emery will be pigheaded about a player if they prove to him that they are worthy of being in the 1st team.

I really like Kola as he is a man mountain of a LB but I do feel he lacks technical ability that Monreal has, he is a good athlete but a poor footballer, more strength than skills. Great shot on him 😛 but that is partially due to the power in them. I do think he is the one who should be worried, he hasn’t been able to replace Monreal and we should be saying how we do not need to sign a LB as we got Kola but we are NOT saying this are we?

This might change through this season though if Emery has identified it as an issue and Kola has the capability to develop his technique, end of the season will be very interesting as Emery would have had 12 months to see how is and who isn’t capable of Emeryball.

  4. Kolasinac was signed with a view to taking over from Monreal in due course.Unfortunately he has been far from impressive and I very much doubt if he will be a success at Arsenal.I would readily give Monreal a one year extension and try to sign Tierney of Celtic who is probably the best young left back in the UK.

      1. ks-gunner, Kolasinac’s form in the Bundes League was outstanding; team of the year etc. His injuries haven’t helped him gain opportunities to impress. Hopefully he will make a full recovery and like Lacazette will come back better to reach his potential.

    1. I forgot about Tierney, only 21 and he does have experience even though he is still a ‘kid’ in many aspects.
This is his 4th season with regular game time plus he has played in the UCL, voted young player of the year a couple times, knows what it’s like to win (in Scotland at least).

His age is ideal as well I think.

      Bellerin (23)
      Holding (22)
      Chambers (23)
      Mavropanos (20)
      Tierney (21)

Add to this our young CM…

      Torreira (22)
      AMN (21)
      Guendouzi (19)

Bellerin seriously needs to develop his def attributes but he has done well going forward this season, the whole backline is young and ‘raw’ but if they can develop together then it is potentially a team that knows each other inside and out (as the saying goes).

  5. Give him a reduced contract in terms of both salary and years…he is still performing isn’t he? Enough to keep kola who I don’t know when and how he got so bad( or maybe he isn’t all bad) but at the preseason he was nothing to write home about..maybe he always needs a run of games …. that position is the least of my worries

  6. Definitely a contract extension for me. He has produced consistently without any major injuries. He is always reliable and other than his age there is nothing wrong with him. Sign him up quickly before Barca turn his head!

  7. Younger has never meant better. Keeping in mind that class is permanent and nacho is a top class player. He is defensively aware, technically proficient and links with the midfield very efficiently (i think this is a requirement of all spanish players) not to mention the important odd goal every few games, something hector on the opposite flank really seems quite clueless about.

  8. It’s a no brainer at all. A straight YES.
He has stood out, not as the best Arsenal player of his time, BUT, I dare to say the STAND-OUT player that has improved each season he has been here consistently.
Na chairman him be o! I salute u na.

  9. check his fitness and performance level in January before determining the length of his new contract, guy is reliable and consistent
