Should Arsenal play kids against Tottenham and risk losing? No way

As someone travelling to the Arsenal v Spurs game tonight I’m surprised how many gooners I read would be happy for us to play the youngsters. Nothing is worth the agony of having Spurs fans on the tube celebrating only their second ever win at the Emirates. Do you think then they will treat it as ‘just the League Cup’?

While we are quick to mock them as this being the only competition they can win, are we that good where we should be dismissing a chance of silverware? Many argued at the weekend that you see fifth as progress for Unai Emery but surely it could only help if he won something in his first year?

I don’t see how playing a strong side in the Derby will impact our chances of beating Burnley. If anything, surely you want us entering the weekend as positive as possible, not going into Xmas with Spurs boasting they are the Kings of North London?

I would be very disappointed if I see the youngsters today. I would go as far as saying that it would be our manager bottling it. Instead of putting his top men through the pressure of a knock out football match against a big rival, he will be giving them a free pass by playing the fringe players. That would be giving Emery an excuse for losing before even a ball is kicked..

  1. Totally agree Dan! We have to field a strong team & make sure we win!
There are bragging rights at stake as well as a semi final place, and after all the grief I’ve had since Sunday…. I really NEED TO BRAG ? COYG

  2. Had this same argument with fellow Spurs fans who seem to be happy to sacrifice league points if it means winning this game. Makes no sense, in the modern game champions league football trumps domestic cups every time. Even the Europa is only worth something if you win. Otherwise its just an extra half a season of games. I have a suspicion both managers will take a more cold blooded view given the number of games over the christmas/new year period.

    1. I’d say it’s because Wenger at his worst still has cup victories, yet Poch has won 0. The history books wont remember Poch as it stands. Oh sorry, they will, along cup runs of the winning teams he will be in black and white.

  3. I think we should put out the strongest team possible. It’s not that I care about winning the cup I just don’t want Spuds winning anything.

  4. Mix it up…
    ……………Cech
    Lich.Sokratis,Koscielny.Monreal
    …Torreira.Guedouzi.
    .Niles………Ozil…….Ramsey
    ………………Lacazette

  5. It’s a tough one, we must beat Burnley to try and keep pace. We also have a chance with the Europa. And this is a cup game against this lot. The games building up can cause injuries, which could hurt our Europa chances and our keeping pace. The Europa and the league are more important, we cannot get too used to this stuff. I’d understand if he rests some players because we’ve already seen what happens when the players cannot all play. Probably a mix we’ll see, but then again I’m sure both these managers would love a cup win. Try and relieve a small bit of pressure, though for some reason Poch hasn’t been facing the same pressure that the other managers have and will face. The Burnley game is an early kick off. Whatever Emery decides, I’m sure we’ll either herald him or bollock him a little so we’ll see. It is a tough one though. Personally, I believe he’ll go with his strongest side or just about. Poch I reckon will do the same, and they might try and keep something on the bench.

  6. kids and players who need to gather some momentum…cech, elneny ,iwobi, rowe, matteo ,AMN, willock ,montreal if we can play him again so soon, ozil , and ramsey all these players should be itching to get in this game!!

a result would be great but remember our injuries first and where we are in the season, can’t afford any more first team players out.

we also need a boost come january to lift the squad and the manager and the fans , keep this momentum going so a signing is imperative a winger or a defender even on loan if we must!! but one of those gaps need to get plugged quick , we can’t have a huge lack of depth and quality in two positions and finish top 4!

  7. It would be dereliction of Emerys duty to our club to put out a weaker side than possible. IF he is intent on fielding a weakened side by CHOICE, I will consider it his first major mistake so far. I do not count the odd Prem selection so far that I would not have made , eg I would certainly have started Lacazette at SAINTS and not started with Iwobi. But that is small beer compared to IF he puts out a deliberately weakened side against Spuds. That would be a serious mistake and show a basic lack of comprehension about how vital Gooners consider it to beat Spuds. However, from statements already made it APPEARS he will field some kids. I hope NOT!!!
