Should Arsenal start with Auba and Laca against Chelsea?

Aubameyang won’t mind playing on the Left Side of attack if ….. by Akinnubi

The season started this last Friday with Manchester United and Leicester competing in the opening match – which the Red Devils won. But it wasn’t our turn until Sunday when we welcomed the defending Champions and arguably the greatest EPL side since the early 2000s, Manchester City.

We lost the game though, following goals from Raheen Sterling and Bernado Silva, but we also responded with two goals too which were both offside and had two penalty claims, but in the end the score read 0:2 in favour of Man City.

One of the positives from the game is that after the introduction of Alex Lacazette for Aaron Ramsey (a move which shifted Ozil to the no. 10 position, Mhkitaryan to the right and Auba who started as the lone forward moved to the left). The attack improved and we started looking dangerous even scoring two goals albeit from offside positions, but the introduction of Lacazette seemed to breathe life into the attack which wasn’t there since the first minute.

Both players have voiced their support of a partnership since last season but the obstacle that seemed to be blocking the partnership was the unwillingness of Arsene to play with two CF and so Aubameyang was shunted to the right and Lacazette through the middle which still yielded goals but an added defensive responsibility for Aubameyang.

The first match of the Emery era also started with both against Boreham Wood with Auba scoring three and Lacazette scoring once but after that Auba started all the other matches relegating Lacazette to the bench, and this continued during the first official match of the 2018/2019 campaign.

Aubameyang speaking to ESPN saw this too and said:” “We really get on well,There is a spark between us when we are both on the pitch together. We look for each other, we saw it against City when he came on. I don’t mind playing on the left if Laca is in the centre. We both want to do our best for the team.”

So, do you think Emery should go all out with his fearsome attack of LACA-MHKI-AUBA-OZIL or continue using Ramsey in place of Lacazette for our first London derby against Chelsea?

Ramsey burns hot and cold…..I would Rather he goes for free next summer if we dont get a buyer in January

      1. Brian, if we don’t get a buyer either this summer window (European clubs could still buy him) or next window he will definitely go for free.

        1. @Things are Changing
I totally forgot the market is still open in other european leagues….I would be over the moon if this wenger crybaby gets a club abroad

    2. Concordo com você. Não vejo motivo para laca não jogar. Nossos melhores jogadores têm que jogar. Cabe ao treinador enxergar a melhor posição de seu jogador e tirar melhor proveito.

  1. My lineup for the next game

    Leno
    Litchstainer Sokratis Shkodran Monreal
    Torreira
    Guenduzzi
    Mikhi. 1Ozil Auba
    Lacazette

    1. Brian, I would like to see that line-up.

Definitely give Aubamayang and Laca a few games together to show what they can do and definitely start Leno and bench Ramsey and Xhaka and start Guendouzi and Torreira.

      1. Mt preferred line up too for Chelsea. But I think Ozil will NOW have to show much more desire or be dropped. And I forecast that he WILL be dropped shouild he not start working hard. THE REASON? BECAUSE EMERY DEMANDS EFFORT. If all Wengers lazy players still think idleness will be accepted. they have the shock of their lives coming. Thankfully!

        1. I just hope Unai does not chicken out of making the upcoming big decisions, starting with the lineup versus Chelsea.

        2. glad im not alone on Ozil. It just seems we’ve been waiting and waiting for years to see him live up to his reputation and it hasn’t happened. I personally think we should be moving on from him after this season. Even if he’s eating up wages until his contract runs out.

      2. I wouldn’t even have XHAKA on the bench he’s toilet, Auba and Laca should both defo start the game, lets have a look at Leno with Lichsteiner socrates Mustafi and Monreal, Terra Guendouzi Micha and Ramsey (by the skin of his teeth) not Ozil this is another big game he will disappear again,Auba and Laca up front.

  2. leno

    bellerin………….mustafi………….sokratis……….monreal

    torreira……………….guendeouzi

    mkhitaryan…………………ozil…………………….aubameyang

    lacazette

when this team played everything was so fluid.

  3. Let’s not do this else we might get frustrated. As I said Auba is more about intelligent use of pace. Its not all about stats but if you watched him at Dortmund then you’d know that he lacked natural proper 1v1 ability and the creative prowess of a winger. When he moved to CF he was able to use his pace more efficiently and position himself such that he’s usually in a 1v1 situation with the keeper.
He lacks the necessary cutting edge for a winger and I’d definitely play Nelson or Iwobi over him.
Let’s not try to fit Auba and Laca into the same team unless we are playing two top because in the long run it won’t work.

    1. Leno
      Bellerin Sokratis Mustafi Lichtsteiner
      Torreira Ramsey
      Mkhitaryan Ozil Nelson
      Aubameyang/Lacazette
Only one of Auba or Laca must start. This will avoid role duplication and prevent them from taking the same space occasionally while also ensuring the right tactical stability of our team.

      1. You would play iwobi over auba on the wings ?
Auba is a world class winger ,maybe watch a few clips over the years to see what I mean ,1st you want Ramsey in the squad and now iwobi SMH

        1. Auba is a world class striker not a world class so get.He was onsidered world class only after playing at CF at Dortmund where he scored lots of goals and no wonder many of his goals in the box.Anytime you’ve seen him play for us on the wing there’s a reason why he’s been poor.As I said he’s more of intelligent use of pace usually to position himself 1v1 with the keeper. He likes those kind of things.Iwobi as bad as he is is a better dribbler than Auba and that’s really required as a winger.
I give you five games and people would start complaining about how poor he is as a winger and how he should be played at CF.

            1. I get your point but in those crucial pure 1v1 situations and other moments you’d see what I mean.I’m not saying the guy isn’t world class but he’s world class at CF not at RW.
No matter how people hide that fact we are going to have to decide playing one of Auba or Laca in the team. Its the same as those who don’t want Ozil and Mkhi playing at the same time.

              1. Auba is more of a direct striker than a winger.I agree with you his weapon is his pace and positioning on a 1v1 situation.

                1. Most strikers these days are not complete. Take Henry for example, his bulildup play was so good.At times he was like a playmaker,a winger then a CF.No wonder he has the record for highest assists in a season while also scoring so many goals.Thats what you call a complete striker

                Leno
                Bellerin – Mustafi – Sokratis – Kolasinac
                Torreira – AMN
                Nelson Ozil Lacazette
                Auba

    2. Most Arsenal fans don’t know this…
      Aubayamang can’t dribble….
Have been watching him right from his Saint Etienne days and the African nations cup….
Lacazette is more suited to the wing than Aubu…..
The reason is this, Laca is good with the ball at his feet than Aubu….

      1. Good observation but wouldn’t say he can’t dribble though. The natural technique for that ability is lacking in his game. The likes of Nelson,Iwobi and Mkhitaryan are all better dribbler and I’d prefer Nelson particularly to start next week.
One thing I’ve observed about our team is most of our midfielders are quite similar and would want to occupy the same space.

  4. OT. EMERY’S DECISION TO LEAVE LAURENT AS CAPTAIN WAS BRILLIANT, AND THEN NAMING 4 ASSISTANTS, THIS ENABLES HIM TO LOOK FOR THE BEST PERFORMERS AND STARTING 11 IN HIS TEAM BEFORE NAMING ANOTHER WEN KOS 6 LEAVES ALSO SOME PLAYERS WILL BE DROPPED FOR NOT PERFORMING AS WE SAW RAMSEY N XHAKA BEING TAKEN OFF, SO IT WAS NOT RIGHT TO NAME RAMSEY AS CAPTAIN

    1. Cech
      Lich/Bellerin, Mustafi, Sokratis, Monreal
      Torreria and Guendouzi
      Auba, Ozil, Ramsey
      Laca.
With a lot of interchange play between the last four.

  5. I really like Iwobis potential but not as a winger…..he should be backup for 1Ozil in the number ten role

    1. But what qualities does he have to play this role?I’ve watched Iwobi from youth level to the senior team and I always felt that he’s be useful only at RW or CF.This is because at CF he can use his strength very well to cause the opposition problems while also being astute technically.
At RW his occasional “Hollywood” style of play can be used to trick opponents and beat markers.Apart from this two roles I’ve never seen any other position where he can play. Some even state he can or should play CM.

  6. Apart from his obvious goalscoring ability and able to get behind the opposition centre backs, he also has electric pace, can beat a man and crosses well. So yes play them together with him drifting in and out of wide positions as he did in pre season to good effect. Anyone who says he can’t beat a full back one on one hasn’t watched him play.

  7. Is this a question worth asking?
Auba himself has said it, we ALL saw that things got better when laca came on, ozil should be played in his normal position( I saw some posts criticising him, but ozil didn’t become one of the best AMs in the world playing as a winger and he actually did better on Sunday than he has during big games in recent years despite playing off position), Ramsey should definitely go back to the bench(if possible, out of the club), mhiki on the right, Auba on the left, torreira and guendouzi behind d quad and, d back four that started against city was okay, Leno should be between the sticks(cech could start but emery will av to forget playing from the back to start cech)

    1. Ramsey gives us something far more aggressive and intelligent than Mkhitaryan. That’s my opinion.

      1. Really, something more aggressive and intelligent?
Wait, where exactly would you want him to start?

      2. This love for Ramsey gets more annoying by the day, what is aggressive in smiling after loosing goal scoring chances
And he’s more intelligent than mkhitaryan? That’s preposterous

  8. As long as no place is found for Xhaka in the team, I don’t care who plays where. Unai should select from these players:
    Leno/Cech
    Bellerin/Lichtsteiner/Monreal
    Mustafi
    Sokratis
    Ramsey/Guendouzi
    Torreria
    Özil
    Mkhitaryan
    Lacazette
    Aubameyang

  9. Bellerin iw proving to be a one season wonder like some of the English players. He doesn’t seem to be playing in his preferred position. He is being torn apart easily by opponents and exposing our defense

  10. Yes, Laca and Auba should both play. Leave Xhaka, Bellerin and Ramsey out of the team, better still out of the club itself. Once Monreal is fit, play Licht on his proper flank, bring in Leno, Torreira is a key player and if Ozil once again disappears at Chelsea, then drop him til he starts working for his place. Guendouzi MUST play regularly as , though he has a few rough edges, he is a clear talent who will quickly progress under Emery and he has “balls,” unlike several other of WENGERS DROSS LEFT BEHIND. BEING ONE OF THE MAIN ARCH REALISTS ON THIS SITE , I NEVER HAD STUPID FANTASIES THAT WE WERE GOING TO WALK THE PREM THIS SEASON. I have already seen plenty from ALL Emerys buys and his refusal to accept Wengeres disgraceful long term acceptance of being lazy and easily bullied – which is true REALISM – to know that we are at long last on the right track, albeit, thanks to WeNGER, at least a whole lap behind our main rivals.

    1. Couldn’t agree more with you Jon. I think the team that finished the 2nd half of the City game should be our starting 11 maybe with Leno coming in for Cech.

  11. I think we should rest Lichtsteiner, Monreal, Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Torreira, Guendouzi for
West ham, a match we can actually win. Ozil can’t play well against big teams. Why waste their energy on a 100% loss?

    For Chelsea:

    Cech
    Bellerin..Sokratis..Mustafi…Niles
    Eleny….Xhaka
    Iwobi….Ramsey….Welbeck
    The Cassette

    1. Arsenal Girl, don’t be so defeatist; it’s only the second game of the season. Arsenal can’t afford to pick and choose the games where they think they can win. We have to make it hard for Chelsea.

      1. thank you sue, you are the only person on here who sees the potential of the future world footballer of the year. god bless you dear. i want more people to understand how crucial my countryman is to arsenal team.he needs a good run in the team and on the field , he will prove all the non believers wrong. iwobi will shine .

        1. I think you’ll find Sue was questioning whether Iwobi should be in the team versus Chelsea, not pushing his case!

          1. Gunnerjack , please dont stick pin in my baloon man, she was asking for iwobi the great to play agaisst the chelsea players, no doubts in this mind of my own fella. he is world class.

            1. Sorry Larry…. you’ve got it wrong! I don’t want Iwobi anywhere near the starting 11 against Chelsea! I don’t rate him

    2. If your lineup plays, Arsenal_Girl, then we really do have no hope whatsoever of beating Chelsea.
Xhaka, Iwobi, Ramsey, Welbeck – ‘Bench Warmers United’.

    3. Frankly, this is a silly line up. Not to include Torreira, Lichtsteiner and Guendouzi is stupid. To INCLUDE Bellrin, Elneny and Xhaka and the injured Niles, who therefore will not be fit, is bonkers. Not one of Emerys buys, except Sokratis, makes your team; bizarre thinking, if indeed there was actually ANY thought at all.

  12. Cech, Ospina, Bellerin, Jenkinson, Mustafi, Holding, Eleney, Xhaka, Ramsey, Ozil, Miki, Wellbeck (probably forgot a couple) should all be phased out over subsequent transfer windows with Emery bringing in players who will fit into the squad and apply his vision going forward.
Sokratis = short term “fix” with the jury being very much out. Should have put this money towards a top level no nonsense centre back.
Nacho = Unfortunately, in this case, coming to the end of his time with us and will be replaced (been one of our most consistent performers – my player of the year last season).
Half the “old” first team listed above – yep, that’s what 10 odd years of delusion, arrogance and complacency leaves you with !
I would be very, very surprised if Unai Emery has not known this squad is “lacking” since taking the job. In the modern vernacular, it’s a “project”.
Emery will be a good, possibly great, manager for Arsenal. He has been left with a complete shambles of a mess to sort out.
Give him every chance to rise above aiming for 4th due to the boards lack of funds and ambition, by in the future actually daring to invest in wining the top level honors outright – it’s gonna take time (Kroenke) !!!!

Build the new side around the core of Leno, Mavropanos (possibly) Torriara, Guendouzi, Auba, Lacazette (Maitland-Niles, Smith-Rowe, Reiss-Nelson given continued progression). Lichsteiner worth hanging on to, experienced and still a very good full back.

    In closing.

    1) Unai, the singing of Wenger’s name on Sunday was NOT aimed at you. Despite the rubbish Man’ City were coming out with, I personally think our response could have been “thought through better”. We are so pleased to see you at the club. Good luck with the immense task to hand – If backed, you’ll get there.

    2) The stadium being two thirds empty with 10 or so to go – again no reflection upon you, we have a large element of prats who leave you and the players facing a virtually empty stadium for the last x minutes of any given game – they have a train to catch after all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. AJ, if the board doesn’t back Unai Emery, then unlike Arsene Wenger he will walk. Good luck then to Arsenal in getting a coach of his quality for his replacement.

      1. I still think that our so called “Diamond Eye” has a big role to play. Why can’t we toe along the lines of Monaco, Ajax, Seville, Valencia Dortmund etc. If we can attract high quality signings at cheap cost just like these clubs without selling them, we will definitely be world beaters. Believe me, there will always be an Mbappe, Dembele or a Bailey at any point in time, he just has to utilize his Diamond eyes to notice them first.

      2. Totally agree ozziegunner, even more reason to back the guy.

Unai is a winner who has ambition, AND EXPECTS THE SAME FROM ANY TEAM HE MANAGES !

The likes of Ozil & Miki (the latter leaving Ainsly M-N totally exposed on Sunday) will not be allowed to stroll about out there under Unai for much longer. I expect reputation to count for nothing.

The day’s of being on “easy street” have come to an end !

THE BOARD MUST ENABLE THIS GUY TO DO THE JOB AS HE SEE’S IT – OR AS YOU SAY …LOOSE HIM !

  13. Yes, I believe that they should play together. I personally think the team that finished the 2nd half of City game should be our starting 11 with maybe Leno coming in for Cech and Lich coming in for Hector when Monreal returns.

  14. The best line up i can think right now after Sunday performance
    First 11:
    Leno
    Lichsteiner……Mustafi….Sokratis…Monreal
    Torreira…Guendouzi
    Mkhtaryan…Ozil…Aubameyang
    Lacazette
    Subs:
    Cech
    Bellerin
    Mavropanos
    Elneny
    Ramsey
    Iwobi
    Nelson
Against Chelsea our winger needs to be more responsible in their defensive duties particularly on right hand side of our flanks where trickery of Hazard and marauding Alonso. If Mikhi and Licht can exploit the space that going to be left by Alonso…we have a chance. Torreira battle with Kante will be one of the deciding factor.
