Should Arsenal start with Giroud against PSG?

Arsenal managed to pull off a last gasp draw with Manchester United yesterday, with the Gunners scoring an equalising goal in the 89th minute. A Olivier Giroud header was enough to peg back the hosts, who had looked far superior throughout the match, against an Arsenal side that just didn’t look on the ball.

If it wasn’t for Arsene Wenger’s tactical substitutions yesterday, especially the decision to haul Jenkinson off for attack minded player Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, then I think the Gunners would’ve struggled to get a point whilst in Manchester. Chamberlain, who was positioned officially at Right-Back, added another attacking presence to Arsenal, after Mourinho’s men had attempted to park the bus. It was Giroud however who had the last laugh, with the Frenchman rising up high from Chambo’s cross to make it 1-1 and the striker should be praised for the attitude he showed in the match.

The jury has often been undecided on Olivier Giroud, so much so that every time the transfer window opens, the majority of fans call for Wenger to sign another striker. However it isn’t until Arsenal witness Giroud’s absence from the team, that the fans come to realise what an important player he is for the side. Giroud has been unable to keep his place as centre-forward so far this season, with Wenger much preferring Alexis Sanchez up front. However with Giroud hitting in the goals after a few substitutions, is it time for the Frenchman to regain his place in the team?

In my opinion Alexis Sanchez has brought a new light to Arsenal, as well as to his own personal career. I think the Chilean is a great forward to have, with fight, strength and passion to get every ball. He also of course knows how to find the back of the net. I think Wenger has made a great decision to test the player up front, but now with Giroud clearly firing the goals in, even when he isn’t starting the matches as the club’s main striker, surely he should get another chance to play up front from the start.

I still don’t think Giroud is a striker who is going to lead the line for a title winning team, he has of course showed he is reliable however at making a positive impact from the bench. But based on players getting picked on form rather than the ‘name’, I think Giroud deserves to have another shot up front as a starting striker for the match against. Giroud has shown great attitude in not sulking but showing the strength to fight for his place in this team. With this in mind, Giroud deserves a start. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Alexis is dropped because of course, the Chilean is more than likely to be pushed back out on the wing, just as he was against United after Giroud’s introduction, although there were signs this week that maybe he could do with a rest.

Is this a change Wenger should be looking to make, or does Alexis remain as the striker in your starting XI?

  1. As much as i love Alexis, he needs a rest for his hamstring to recover.
    Play Giroud against PSG.
It doesnt matter so much who finishes top of the group any more. You are not guaranteed an easy game anyway.

  2. I definitely think he deserves a start, it will keep sanchez on his toes also (not that sanchez hasnt been working hard). Competition is great for the squad and its nice to see that for once wenger has a selection headache. As long as ramsey doesnt start on the wings im happy.

    1. My thoughts exactly! The next two UCL games I’ll give to the youngsters and fringe players so the first teamers are able to get some much needed rest and avoid fatigue injuries. Besides, seeking “easy opponents ” in the next round is just a recipe for complacency.

  3. A potential formation that we could use, to keep defensive stability as well as attacking threat could be a 4-3-3. For example, on wednesday, maybe go for:
    Cech
    Jenko bostafi gibbs
    Le coq
    Ozil xhaka
    Walcott giroud sanchez

  4. A manager who fails to plan, plans to fail (Wenger 5 years ago) Times have changed though. There have been games this season (including cup games) where we excelled and scored plenty of goals without the likes of Giroud. Whether this was strategy by Wenger or just sheer luck, we can see that our squad has the flexibility to adjust to any situation like Saturday. Giroud has the ability to unlock very defensively and congested teams. Play him in situations like this and he will thrive. If you just You Tube his goals since he joined Arsenal, 90% of them are from crosses and air balls.

But there will be some teams who give us the space to effectively counter attack with speed, which Giroud is not suited for. This is when we see players like Walcott, Sanchez, Chamberlain and Ozil really come to light.

So end of the day essentially it boils down to the decisions of the manager. He needs to adapt his team to the situation on the pitch and try and counter the oppositions strategy – something which I think Wenger has improved on tremendously and we can see it from our unbeatable run.

  5. I just want to state the obvious here by saying that the PSG is more of a must not lose game than a must win because we have a favourable goal difference and I fancy us to pick up a win in the final group game against Basel. Therefore, I’d play Giroud, rest Alexis, in a 4 – 1 – 4 – 1 formation.

  6. For me I think if ozil continue like this Wenger should bench him and play alexis sanchez at his place like our play maker.in the game against man utd it was alexis who organised our game not ozil.so ï think Wenger should try alexis like play maker and play walcott and Iwobi on the flank.

    1. I don’t think it’s Ozil’s fault only, everyone played rubbish that day, there are those that played worse than the others. ie. Ramsey, Elneny, and some others. so before crucifying him, remember when Ozil and co. play well, these 2 are either on the bench or injured.

there was no forward movements from Elneny, Ramsey always trying his famous flicks, the RB was uncomfortable, everybody played rubbish including Ozil

  7. If this question is gonna be asked whenever Giroud makes a sub appearance n scores we are never going to move forward.

For the upteenth time NO! start Alexis upfront n bring Giroud in the 2nd half.!

  8. For this specific PSG game and some other tight games, it will give sense to play Giroud from the start. However, what we saw so far this season is the reverse one. Giroud is more effective when he play off the bench. As far as this tactic is good and giving us a result, why should we change it?. He should understand it as a tactical choice and accept it for the betterment of the team performance and result. Because of this reason, I would prefer to play Giroud and OX from the bench unless the situation is changed.

  9. We can have both. I feel we need a two striker formation in the following configurations of 4.4.3, 4.4.2, 4.4.1.1 and their variations.

    In A 4.4.2 arrangement
    —————–Alexis-Giroud—————-
    ————–Iwobi–Xhaka–Ozil————-
    ——————–Coquelin———————
    ———————Back5————————-
    In the 4.3.3 arrangement
    ———–Alexis-Giroud-Iwobi—————-
    ———————Ozil—————————
    —————Coquelin-Xhaka——————
    ———————Back5————————-
    In the 4.4.1.1 arrangement
    ——————Giroud——————–
    ——————-Alexis———————
    ———-Iwobi–Xhaka–Ozil————-
    —————–Coquelin——————
    ———————Back5——————
Walcott coming off the bench for now or Walcott starts with Alexis and Giroud comes in the second half.
