Should Paulista start for Arsenal this weekend?

I must admit that I was worried about Arsene Wenger perhaps being a bit over confident about getting a work permit for the new Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista. We were told at the weekend that the Gunners and his Spanish La Liga club Villarreal had agreed the terms of the transfer and even Wenger said that the deal was set to be completed β€˜today or tomorrow’, although we are still waiting for official confirmation from Arsenal as usual.

It would not be the first time that Wenger and Arsenal did not get the decision they expected from the football authorities and so I feared that they might stick to the letter of the law and not allow Paulista a work permit as he had no full international caps with Brazil.

And that would be a real waste if we had already signed him, but it seems that the Frenchman has made sure that will not happen as he has already obtained the work permit for the 24-year old defender and now the Brazilian has been sent to France to complete the necessary paperwork quickly..

The next question is whether Paulista will come straight into the starting line-up. With a home game against the Premier League strugglers Aston Villa up next for Arsenal, it could be the ideal chance to hand the new Gunner his debut. Would you play him on Sunday? And if so, who would you drop?

  1. we are actually debating bout someone who hasn’t even put pen to paper yet?…….. This is just ridiculous

    1. News on Arsenal FC website announced he’s signed and it’s a done deal!!
Web piece also said that Campbell had “agreed a new long-term deal prior to a loan move to the La Liga side”
So it’s Welcome to Gabriel, and Good Luck Joel, see you next season!!

  2. Why not, what better game for him to get started than against a relegation team like Villa before the Spuds assult.
But I don’t see him playing. He will be on the bench..

  3. NO.

He needs to unlearn all what he has been taught about defending at Villarreal. He needs to be schooled on

    > Arsenal’s brand of zonal defending
    > High line defence
    > Panicky clearances

This will take 5 weeks I reckon.

  4. Most important game in my opinion is always the next game which sunday happens to be against Villa.Chelsea, decided last saterday, that the game against Bradford wasn’t.They got bounced out of the FA cup for their troubles and don’t tell me that didn’t hurt.
Play your best team sunday and try not to be to clever Monsieur Wenger, if it means leaving out a new signing, so be it.

  5. Off topic, Of late everyone on here says we dont need a new DM. How ridiculous does sound. Reason being We have Beliek and Le Coq. Last time i checked our injury record, its the the young lads we always throw into the mix that are injury prone with the exception of Arteta and Rosisky who where bought with poor fitness levels. Who am i talking about, Diaby, Gibbs, Ramsey,Wlshere and f late Gnabry. These players where young and where made to play against mature men, Their legs got broken and spent over one year on the sidelines and then came back injury prone. We should stop this nonsense of playing children against men match in match out, we are not helping them in this way. Instead we destroy these kids careers. I know they ned to develop but it should be done the right. Besides i have never seen a title winning side relying on 17 year old kids, its only at Arsenal then we start blaming injury gods

        1. @Jogon
          LOL!!!
Hey, dudes a professional. Or maybe I think every players like Sanchez, can hit the ground runnin…
I’m good, dude. Thanks for asking. Hope the same holds for you and yours…

  6. Fact: Defense is the position that requires most tactical training.

Fact: It takes time to properly train tactics

Fact: Paulista will have at most 4 days with the squad prior to the game

Conclusion: Paulista will not have enough time to adapt to the tactical training. As we do not have a shortage or injury issue at this exact juncture there is no need to make a switch to accomodate a player prematurely. Bring him in nice and gentle.

  7. Is this a bad joke? He hasn’t been signed yet. When he does sign he will have been at the club for only 3 training sessions before the match. Mertesacker and Kos are a very good CB pairing despite everyone whining about how bad Mertesacker is (the guy who has played every single game so far with 4 different CB partners) and Kos being out of form.

  8. Off topic
Chelsea ‘s Costa must tread in a lot of dog S*** cos he doesn’t look where he’s treading, that’s why the FA are charging him for treading on 2 Liverpool players ankles.

    1. Yes but see the way Gerrard reacted, no one can tell me that if an Arsenal player did same that he wouldnt have been showing a red because i know he would, at least Costa didnt faint similar to a bitch wearing newc colours. Gerrard didnt even get yellow, not that i think he should have its just seeming like our players arent allowed to show emotion and we certainly arent allowed let it get the better of us. Refs are killing the game, for me the take it in turns chipping at Gunners ankles is much worse than players emotions spilling over as with one there is intent and the other is just a will to win.

  9. Bring him on in the last 20 mins of the Villa game and do this for the next one or two games. Then give him a full half and eventually let him play a full 90 mins. It’s all about team cohesion and learning how the players next to you think and react. Throwing him in for a full 90 min game isn’t wise, we need to gradually bring him up to speed. In that time, he will also learn a lot at training, so by then he will be 100% ready. Right now, I would like to see Chambers and Koss as CB’s, Bellerin and Monreal LB and RB respectively. I think the BFG can be utilized against less pressing and sweaty teams, but he needs to be benched for games like Liverpool, Chelsea, United, teams that rely on quick counter attacking to score. This is where Paulista would be most valuable and the BFG least.

  10. Just a thought…. I’m not Arsenal Wenger, Jose, or Ferguson but if I was the manager I’d follow some highly advanced innovative steps.

    1. Sign the player – contracts are wonderful things to have if you want a player to be fielded for you.

    2. Get him in the country you are going to play your matches – makes it a tad easier for him to play

    3. Let him actually participate in some training with him new team – very important; this can only happen after step 1 and 2.

    4. Analyse whether to start him or not.

Now I know this may be blue sky thinking to this “writer” but as an Arsenal fan I like to think outside the box.

  11. Id love to see him asap – but thats just because Im an excited fan-
Reality is, we will have to wait a couple of games before we see his talent grace our fields.

    Welcome to Arsenal!

  12. No way i see him starting the match. At most Wenger will use him for the remaining season in FA cup or in case we are short due to injuries in PL/UCL games. And that is not the wrong way actually. Playing the Arsenal way and building the chemistry with the fellow CD, GK and Midfielders will take time. But next season i expect him to start along with Kos regularly.

    1. Actually Monreal paired with Mertesacker has been OK this season – he came unstuck though big time against Brighton with Kos.

  13. lets play a fully defensive or fully attacking team..

    ———Szczeny———
    Bellerin Paulista Kos Monreal
    —-Coq Bielek Flamini—-
    —–Chambers Gibbs——
———Mert(he’s tall, can hold up play n score headers from set pieces..plus hes got electric pace and can dribble n shoot like podolski)—-

    or fully attacking..

    ———Ospina———
    Ramsay Rosicky Alexis Ox
——–Giroud(he should have always been a dm)———-
    ——Carzola Ozil—–
    Theo Akpom Welbeck

      1. okay, if u insist then just go ahead n thumb me down πŸ™ πŸ˜₯ πŸ˜₯

    1. At least make Alexis RB or LB so that he can run up and down the channel causing havoc! Play him to his strengths.

  14. Stick to baseball and hotdogs and cheerleaders yank.
Seriously, do appreciate your input and gooner support.

  15. My only concern, Paulista is very similar to Kos. The reason being Verm and Kos who could not become as good partners as Mert and Kos who have different styles and hence they complement each other well. Thoughts Gooners ?

    1. Much as I think that Mertesacker is a liability and both physically and mentally below standard, I think we should give Paulista time to settle, watch a few games and generally become aclimatised. We don’t need another right back and Wenger should make sure that Jenkinson is welcomed back. He has shown what he can do, given the games.

  16. This is kind of a ridiculous article because it will never happen for a few reasons:
    1. You don’t start a new player unless there is an emergency or a player is injured and needs rest.
    2. Wenger won’t do that. He prefers gradually using new or recently returned players
    3. It wouldn’t be good for the moral of the player he replaces.
    4. He needs to earn his place by coming of the bench. He is a good player but not a superstar like Hummels, Ramos etc who doesn’t need to prove himself.
    5. (related to 4) The Premier League is very different league for foreign defenders. Paulista has problems with strong strikers and PL has plenty of them so needs time to adapt. Even Koscielny (our star defender) needed time to adapt.

  17. please can you wait for official ARSENAL.COM to announce the arival of paulista before you put in into field.
