Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger fielded Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a makeshift right-back against Manchester United, and Jamie Carragher has now stated he believes he should look to that role for his future.
The Ox has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth in the Gunners side for some time now, but impressed when coming off the bench at full-back against Manchester United at the weekend.
Chamberlain sprinted up the line to whip in the cross which saw Olivier Giroud head into the back of the net, which ultimately resulted in his side rescuing a point from the tie.
Carragher has now claimed he should be looking at making that switch permanent in the future.
The former defender said: “Jamie Redknapp was quite critical of Marcus Rashford the other day.
“[But] I’ve got a little bit more sympathy with him, and the reason why is because yes, Oxlade-Chamberlain has gone to a full back position.
“And I think maybe going forward that could be a position he could look for.
“Look at how [Antonio] Valencia has done it for Manchester United.
“[He is a] similar type of player.
“[He’s] powerful and you think he has the energy to get up and down.”
After these words, Arsene Wenger once again brought the Ox on for Jenkinson in last night’s 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain, with the English defender failing to impress as cover for Hector Bellerin.
Chamberlain may well be able to push for a first-team role if he can attain the trust of Arsene Wenger to start ahead of Carl, with Mathieu Debuchy and Hector Bellerin not ready to play at present.
