Should this be Petr Cech’s last season as Arsenal’s first-choice keeper?

Petr Cech arrived at Arsenal from Chelsea as an undoubted Premier League legend, although his reign at the Blues was cut short by the arrival of the Belgian star Thibault Courtois. The Czech keeper has tons of experience and is a calming presence in the Gunners defensive setup, but lately there has been a few question marks about whether he is actually better than our Cup keeper David Ospina.

For starters he has never saved a penalty for Arsenal, and there were a few raised eyebrows when Cech inadvertently passed the ball to his the ex-Gunner Cesc Fabregas therefore gifting Chelsea a third goal against us last week. This has fueled speculation that he may be on his way this summer but Wenger stepped in to come to his defence. Le Prof said: “Petr Cech is a guy who prepares well, is serious, and wants to do well,”

“He was at fault for the third goal [at Chelsea] but overall I believe he has had a good season.”

Now Cech’s agent, Viktor Kolar, has also stepped in to quell the rumours of his departure, and he has been quoted as saying on ESPN: “Petr’s position at the club is very secure and a summer transfer can be ruled out,”

“Petr will be part of Arsenal until at least the end of his current contract and I am convinced that he will continue to have a leadership role in the team.”

I agree that Cech will stay until the end of his contract, but I doubt that his agent is in a position to decide whether he will still be the first choice next season. Ospina has always been excellent when called upon and has maybe earned the right to be ahead of Cech in the pecking order. Who thinks it is about time that Ospina was given a chance to make the shirt his own?

        1. That goal Cech gave to Chelsea is the first real flap/calamity I’ve seen him do. I see Ospina even on a good day doing some strange headless things, Flapianski is more like Ospina, same goes for Szcz. Cech usually keeps logical and safe. I’d give Cech next season to prove he hasn’t lost too much of his reflexes, let him know we are on the look out for a new no1 to fight it out with him, I’d expect his performances and work load to go up.

  1. It’s about time. Cech hasn’t really done anything Ospina, Szczesny or Martinez couldn’t have done in my opinion. By the way, I rate Martinez very highly 😉 Has good height and I think the best ball distribution of all our keepers.

  2. Ospina was excellent for the last half a season before Cech came. He did not deserve to lose his place and I think it is about time he gets a proper shot.

  3. I wonder if Ospina will start against Munich?
Even though he has been starting in the previous Champions league group games, it’s a big ask expecting him to jump in and perform well against Munich, Especially when he hasn’t had much game time.?

    1. I thought he would of played against Hull tbh, in preparation for this.

But hey this is Wenger and logic defies him.

  4. What I dislike most about Wenger is that he sticks to his favourites even when the playing utter rubbish.

Welbeck, Ospina and Lucas deserve a fair shot. They have done well when called upon.

  5. OT: I’m going to be honest here, Ozil is my favourite player by a country mile and I think dropping him for a UCL game will wake up the entire squad.

I mean if we can drop our record signing for not performing imagine what Wenger can do to you.

Ozil may not like it, but hey he won’t lose the loCoker room over it.

  6. If I’m Wenger I’ll simply split the two legs between Cech and Ospina to keep both happy. Cech will want to play champions league football too. Not fair to leave him out. Ospina should play at least one EPL game as well.

  7. Cech is our best keeper and he should retain the 1st spot in the team. Whenever it seemed cech could have done better to make the save it also seemed that the whole defense should have done better as well. Cech always had great support from chelase defence which i am sure he misses here. Remember cechs first game for arsenal? He made 2 errors leading to goals, one of which was directly the fault of defense leaving the player free just outside 6 yard box and then cech trying to make up for it by coming out. That ended up as goal and cech error.

  8. We need to invest in another keeper. I like Ospina, but he is another keeper that lets in goals that he shouldn’t. I don’t think GK should be a main target in the summer, but we need somebody world class as our next buy, because Ospina is not on the same level as DDG, Courtois, and that’s what we should be aiming for. Cech has been on a decline this season, has never saved a penalty for us, it looks like he’s starting to wind down unfortunately.
