So Arsenal were lucky – but the defence deserves extra credit!

Most Arsenal fans will agree that yesterday’s game was not the usual Arsenal style of sexy attacking football that we have seen in the last few weeks, but the fact is that we somehow managed to sneak the 3 points in the end, albeit in controversial circumstances.

But of course our French Prof was trying to look on the positive side, and he has noted that this is now our fourth clean sheet in a row, which is definitely something to be proud about for our defence, and of course he also noted that it was a defender that claimed the winning goal.

“It’s fantastic because we got three unexpected points in the end. I have to give the credit to my side because we kept going,” Wenger said on Arsenal.com. “We were a bit jaded physically and mentally as well, but we absolutely wanted to win the game.

“In the end it was maybe a bit of a fortunate goal, and the surprising thing from that is that we could have maybe lost the game on a set-piece. Instead, we won it on a set-piece and that is not our strongest attribute at the moment in the side.

“[Burnley] made us suffer right until the last second. It shows that the squad is mature and that we can be patient when we need to be, to keep going and score a goal.

“We didn’t concede against Chelsea, we didn’t concede against Basel, and we didn’t concede here. The defenders deserve double the credit because, not only did they not concede, they also scored a goal.”

So, as Monty Python famously said… “Always look on the bright side of life!”

  1. Yes, the defenders deserve more credit for their good combination and concentration though the whole team members have their own contribution for the win. What a lovely back line combination we have this year. It is down to a good defenders combination, the team sprite and maturity to get four consecutive clean sheets.

  2. Enough about this “lucky or controversial win”. I don’t take it.
We won it because our players wanted to win and worked for it.
What took Kos the Boss, our defender to the 18 yard box of opponents? was it not the zeal to win? What made Burnley players to camp in their 18? Was it not pressure?
People are talking as if a Burnley player took the ball from the centre circle and scored an own goal.
Yes our defence deserve credit and our boys deserve credit for acquiring winning mentality even in the face of difficulties and having believe till the last second.
We sounded off on a good note before international break and I’ll take that. Okay?

      1. Yes. Just read this:
The Burnley boss was clearly unhappy with the decision but former Premier League official Dermot Gallagher disagreed.

He told Sky Sports News: “First thing to say is he’s not offside from the cross and flick-on. I think it’s Walcott with the flick-on, so it’s not offside. Handball has to be deliberate, but I don’t think it’s handball.

“It struck him and we are stuck with the rule where it has to be deliberate. People said his arms were up but that’s because he used his arms for elevation.

“He has actually mis-kicked it, it has flown up and hit him, so it’s not hand to ball, it’s ball to hand. There is nothing wrong in the law with what happened.”

So can we move on and make Swansea pay for their sins of last season?

  3. Which new arrival has been Arsenal’s Lucky charm?
Xhaka was already here when we lost at home to Liverpool so it has to be Mustafi… Right? ?

Since we’re on the Monty python thyme,
You can add also add the “Oouu you lucky lucky B#stard” to that. ?

  4. This is where i feel giroud will be needed this season, for teams that sit deep like this and leave no space to pass, especially in the final 20 minutes of the game. Yesterday we needed a target to aim at, luckily koscielny was in the right place at the right time. Credit goes to walcott for the assist.
Overall im happy with the fight we showed until the end and we are showing some real mettle to win games late even when we are not playing well, COYG

  5. A win is a win thank God for that but we were short geroud and lucas were injured so in essence we were lucky to win we were cautious with patience at the end it payed off well done petr cech and defense for wining us the game

  6. no one said we were unlucky to lose against liverpool as we had to play our 4th choice CB and a kid playing his first epl game… so why complain now? a win is a win

  7. See Skysports – Ref Watch:
MATCH: Burnley v Arsenal, Premier League, Sunday

INCIDENT No 1: Laurent Koscielny scores winning goal

SCENARIO: With Arsenal chasing a winning goal from the final attack of the game, the ball gets crossed in from the right and a combination of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Koscielny force it home. Replays showed the final touch came off the Arsenal defender’s hand.

    DERMOT’S VERDICT: Correct decision

DERMOT SAYS: First thing to say is he’s not offside from the cross and flick-on. I think it’s Walcott with the flick-on, so it’s not offside. Handball has to be deliberate, but I don’t think it’s handball.

It struck him and we are stuck with the rule where it has to be deliberate. People said his arms were up but that’s because he used his arms for elevation. He has actually mis-kicked it, it has flown up and hit him, so it’s not hand to ball, it’s ball to hand. There is nothing wrong in the law with what happened.
So please explain how lucky we were
