Southampton next as Arsenal get home draw for EFL cup

Arsene Wenger has already hinted that he will continue to give the young Arsenal players and some of those that do not play so much another chance to impress when the Gunners play the quarter-final of the EFL cup next month, although whether he changes his mind a little as the game draws near we will have to wait and see.

The fact that we have been drawn against another Premier League club for the first time this season may have an effect on the Frenchman’s thinking, as might the identity of our opponents. Southampton have certainly been a bit of a bogey side for Arsenal in recent years and even though we beat them at home earlier in the season, it was a close run thing and needed a very late penalty.

The good news for the manager, however, is that the match will be played at the Emirates so if he does fancy a young side they will not have to face a hostile away crowd and should feel more comfortable on the pitch. The timing of the game is pretty handy as well, with Bournemouth at home on the Previous Sunday.

The Saints also play on that Sunday but a bit later and against tougher opposition in Everton. Anyway, before that Wenger has plenty more things to think about but in a months time, do you think Arsenal will be one step closer to Wembley and a trophy?

  1. That remains to be seen. If you ask me, I’d prefer AW takes that Sothon game very serious & field a stronger side than we saw in the game against Reading.

  2. The stronger the opponent, the stronger side we should be fielding. EFL might be a joke to some, but I like watching my club play no matter what tournament it is. Plus, it gives young guys a chance to show what they’re capable of.
