Southampton v Arsenal match preview and prediction

Southampton hosts Arsenal in this FA Cup game, with both clubs looking to make progress in the competition.

The Gunners have already lost one of the trophies expected of them this season, but they remain in contention for a treble, which includes the FA Cup. They suffered defeat in the League Cup final before the international break and will now aim to make progress against a Southampton team eager to cause a shock.

Southampton’s Recent Form

Ahead of this encounter, Southampton has been in excellent form, winning four of its last five matches and losing none. This run will provide them with confidence heading into the game, making them feel capable of competing effectively, particularly as they enjoy the advantage of playing at home.

Arsenal faces a potential dilemma. With a key Champions League fixture approaching, Mikel Arteta could opt to rest some of his most influential players for this match. While this strategy might preserve energy for European competition, it also carries the risk of undermining the team’s strength in the FA Cup. The Gunners are well aware that cup upsets are always a possibility and must avoid underestimating their opponents if they wish to prevent any shock results.

Pressure and Expectations

Southampton will approach the match under less pressure, despite being the home side. This relaxed approach could allow them to play more freely, presenting a challenge to a motivated Arsenal squad. For the visitors, it is essential to perform at their highest level and ensure they secure a positive outcome. Success in this fixture is vital not only for maintaining their treble ambitions but also for reinforcing the team’s mentality in knockout competitions. Arsenal must demonstrate focus, intensity, and consistency if they are to navigate a potentially tricky tie and advance to the later stages of the tournament.

Ultimately, while Southampton’s recent form cannot be overlooked, Arsenal’s experience and quality make them the favourites, provided they approach the game with the required discipline and determination.

Prediction

Southampton 0-2 Arsenal

  1. Its a no brainer, play the second string, force a result in our favor, if not let is pass. UCL is more important for the clubs’s stature and finances. Progress to the FA semis earns the club approx half a million, progress to the UCL semis earns the club 15M. Most of the first team players are tired and need rest to recuperate. This is another unwanted distraction.

    1. It’s not a no brainier.

Our players have won back to back to back to back matches while playing 3 times in 10 days. We have run Zubi, Rice, Saka(when fit), Raya, Gyokeres (when fit) to the ground at every opportunity this season.

So the business end of the season is where we draw the line?

I say play our full strength, this is not 3rd round but a ticket to another Wembley appearance. Beating Southampton means we are extremely likely to lift FA Cup. Since I don’t see Chelsea, Pool or City ever beating us again this season.

Lose/Draw against Sporting means we go with full force and beat them at Emirate, then qualify for Semi final

Lose/Draw against Bournemouth means we still win the league with a draw at Etihad given city will likely also drop points, we just need to match their result till May.

Lose against Southampton means another cup disappointment, this will break my heart. Guardiola will be right to point to our “Crumbling” as a motivation to then DO THE TREBLE. (Carabao, EPL, FA Cup)

Start our strongest squad, then take important players off when we are 2 nil up.

  2. We are the only English team remaining in this competition, it’s only prudent that our fa Cup game should have been rescheduled to a 5pm kick off rather than the late kickoff for ample preparation for Europe.
Other major leagues do much in helping their teams including postponement! . Having said that, I’ll enjoy the games as they come and I trust whoever is put out there to do a professional performance to the next stage.
Somebody should be telling this group that they are onto something special, that they should impress the pressure and the opportunity to go into history!
They just need that Xtra gear at this time of season. That lethargic second half at Wembley shouldn’t and can’t be allowed to happen.

    1. Kenja001,

Just to let you know, we’re not the only English team remaining in the Champions League. Liverpool are still in it to.

Although the trouncing they’ve just taken from City in the FA Cup won’t have done anything for their confidence.

  3. Today I hope that Lewis Skelly plays in his preferred position of midfield. While people question his ability’s regards the left back position, I don’t think he’s been given a fare go in his preferred midfield position.

This is the time to let him show what he can do from there. whether Arteta gives him that chance is open for debate.

  4. Use the squad wisely. We have enough quality. MLS, Norgard, Jesus, Martinelli, White, Mosquera, Dowman and players back after injury should all get good time on the pitch.

  5. Has the arsenal come all this way in the fac only to be beat by the saints and mocked further by pundits and jealous fans alike? I don’t believe it.

Gyokeres is on a high at the minute, following his performance for SWE. So let’s start him. I believe he’s turned a corner. Is anybody here of the mind that we lose or struggle today…?? Is there anyone at all thinking we’re that poor…?? Me neither. We don’t need to broadcast it BUT we already know the outcome of today’s tie.
