Squad depth and poor leadership ruined Arsenal’s title chances claims journalist

Arsenal’s loss to Brighton in their last game all but ended their quest to win the Premier League this season.

Poor results against the likes of West Ham and Southampton earlier had dealt their chances a huge blow and they needed to win their remaining games of the season.

However, they lost to Brighton to make it hard for them to stay in the race and The Daily Mail’s Daniel Matthews has given his analysis as to why.

He writes in his column:

“The Arsenal boss has made 12 fewer tweaks to his starting XI than any other Premier League manager this season. That has helped his side gel and allowed combinations to develop. But it has also illustrated the gap in resources.”

Adding: “Aaron Ramsdale admitted not long ago that many of Arsenal’s players weren’t quite sure how to deal with the demands of a title race. The goalkeeper was not suggesting they were cowed by the challenge — they were simply entering uncharted waters as the second-youngest average starting XI in the league.”

Just Arsenal Opinion

Winning the league requires so much from us, but our boys have choked in the last few weeks.

We need to end the term with wins in our remaining games, but it will not change anything and we need to start planning for the next campaign as soon as we can.

Our players have now tasted what it feels like to be in the race and it would be very helpful in preparing them for another challenge, which could happen again next season.

  1. The simple truth is, that City raised the bar and it was too much for us, no team could have competed with the Standard that City set, we did incredibly to stay on top for so long but we didn’t have the players to replace when we had injuries. There is no shame in losing to City. We pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and Start again. We invest and we compete

  2. Many moons ago I stated Arsenal needs a steady and season hand like Ilkay Gundogan in our final third some fans just couldn’t see the need for this season campaigner.

    1. Gunsmoke, the problem with that though, is he wasn’t available. I don’t think he would even be in England if it wasn’t for Guardiola. The horse has bolted and we were never to have him. What MA/Edu need to do is find similarly intelligent and talented players who can help us achieve great things. Add them to this squad which is already more than just promising. I am very confident about the future.
Finally, you asked me something the other day. You wondered why you’ve only just started seeing my posts. The reason is that although I have been an Arsenal fan for over 50 years, I always stayed clear of “social” media, as alot of the time it is not sociable at all. It’s been, in the main, an enjoyable experience, but sometimes I’ve seen things that are unpalatable to me. So I may be returning to the shadows soon. However, I will always be a Gunner until the day I die, in good times as well as bad. And I’ll always remember Gunsmoke, Indian Gunner London, Marge, Herr Drier, AlanBall08, Siamois, all of whom are the best of the best. In fact I hope Admin Pat passes on my regards to those people so that they know how good they are.

      1. HELL and a big fat no, we need you here.
Thanks for referring me back to this page..

It is with great sadness I read this post, you are like a breath of fresh air on this site, your awesome sense of humor is one of the first things that caught my attention but you speaks so knowledgeable about the game which led me to know you are a season campaigner.
I was never bless with amazing choice of words like you, in fact far from it, so I always look forward to your post though at times it may take awhile.

There was a time when this site had a lot of ranting it seems to have cool somewhat, one gets the feeling the temperature could be edging up back as the campaign concludes.
It is difficult being a gooner and while the gaffer and some players can jump from club to club I can never so too are my children we suffer together.
One thing I can tell you Ev, in all my years on planet earth and am no chicken, I have never met an hostile or overly aggressive Arsenal fan in real life.

As it relates to Ilkay Gundogan, I am in agreement with you , maybe would have been extremely difficult to pull it off.
Yes am very optimistic about the future they are strong indications, the team will be strengthen well.

There is another gooner by the name Idontknowhyicare I found him to be a very inform fan miss hearing from him.
Am keeping my fingers crossed that you remain on the site, there is no doubt you are a genuine and sincere person and we love having you here.

  3. Brother, I feel the same about you. I haven’t seen anything from “idontknowhyicare”, I must have missed out on him/her. How long have you been a correspondent on JA ?
My daughter always sees me as a dinosaur because I opted out of these forums, so she would probably be shocked if she knew what I’ve been up to.
I may from time to time have a peek at what’s happening on this site.
Disagreement is OK but very soon I was made aware of an element of unfair and unneccessary criticism of people who might not be considered to be articulate. There is one particular culprit who feels obliged to point out anyone’s failings, and instead of showing some compassion, he likes to call them out and show them up. It should also be remembered that English may not be the first language of many who wish to contribute. Everyone should be made to feel welcome and included as long as they are not rude or abusive. Last Sunday there was a prime example of what I’m talking about and I felt so sorry for the guy who was belittled. I responded to that recipient in a hope that I could help him feel better. He probably never saw my post as I imagine he high-tailed off the site, possibly never to return.
Anyway I can see right through bullies and nasty characters, it’s just a shame that they can hide behind their cowardice without any punishment.
A few rounded on me at first, until they realised who they were dealing with.
Generally the site is worthwhile and people get a chance to express themselves which is a good thing for those who need it.
It’s a pity that the people I have admired the most on JA may never see my post about them.
You and I will be in touch from time to time though. Keep being as good as you are.
