Today at 11 am UK time (12 noon CET) Arsenal fans will finally find out who the Gunners will be facing in the first knockout round of the Champions League. Naturally (as we finished second in our group as usual) we are nearly certain to face one of the European heavyweights, and who would be surprised if we drew Bayern Munich or Barcelona as usual!
So here are our possible opponents:
Barcelona
Real Madrid
Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid
Porto
Monaco
So we have four possible BRILLIANT opponents and two very difficult ones, so we have realistically a 1 in 3 possibility of having a chance to progress to the next round. BUT it is also possible (if unlikely) that we will get all our injured players back to fitness, as well as buying a top class DM and centre-back in the January window. That is a bit optimistic (to say the least) so let us just choose amongst ourselves which team we would PREFER to face in the next round. Surely it’s got to be Porto or Monaco?
Arsenal failed to top the Group thanks to that ridiculous draw against Anderlecht when we were 3-0 up, so to put things in perspective I am going to list the teams we COULD have faced if we had won the Group:
Bayer Leverkusen
Juventus
Basle
Shakhtar Donetsk
PSG
I’m sure all Arsenal fans would be a lot happier today if we were in the pot to face one of those teams, wouldn’t we?
Porto or Monaco
We never have any luck with draws so expecting to get barca,real madrid or munich!

Porto or Monaco would do but I should sure love to us play R/Madrid, both teams thrive on attacking football though Madrid would edge this one on paper (stranger things have happened in football).

I don’t care but to avoid boredom and repetition I would prefer to it not to be Bayern. Tired of this finishing 1st or 2nd b***s&t – finishing 1st only gives a team a better chance of getting to the last 8 and then it is a free-for-all and you cannot avoid anyone.
Talk of our luck with German teams I can foresee us drawing Bayern. If not its gonna be Cristiano Penaldo 4real. Came on WOBs, we crank it up on Arsen once more we might sail through!

When Shaktar was picked, and I was their possible rivals, I was like come on! We have to get lucky at least once! And Bayern went out next and I was jumping in rejoice!
Now don’t get me wrong, Monaco conceded only 1 goal in the group stage. We need to make the emirates count that night. We can go through, it’ll be nice if we do. But no team is easy, not in the Champions League.
Also, I did not want Bayern because it’s been to epetitive, Real Madrid would’ve been a nice challenge. But we did not get an European giant for once, I believe we’re favourites, but this team is not to be taken lightly. COYG!
