Torreira arrives and Arsenal are getting better every day

There is nothing but good news for Arsenal fans every day, and it could be that the two final pieces of our improving squad have finally joined up with the Gunners, with the news that both Lucas Torreira and Stephan Lichtsteiner joined in their first training sessions yesterday.

They may be a little behind the players that have been with Emery since the start of pre-season, but they can only improve a team that is looking more and more comfortable in every game. Hector Bellerin believes that there has been nothing but positives to take from our tour of Singapore. He told Arsenal.com: “As I said the other day, it’s all about learning the new system, about getting used to each other again and used to the new players,”

“It felt like things were clicking more today. Slowly we are coming more together – training every day with the new concepts we have is working better.”

“It’s amazing to see all the love and support we get from people in Asia and here in Singapore,”

“I’m very happy with training and the attitude of the young players as well, who are coming through and taking their chances. It was a very good trip for everyone.”

Everything is looking positive, and Emery still has another 12 days to hone the squad for the visit of Champions Man City to the Emirates. He is aiming to have the team at their peak to give Pep Guardiola’s side a shock in their first defence of the title.

Onwards and Upwards!

  1. Some people come here to call arsenal fans the worst set of supporters that are filled with disgrace and they ask.. Where has the class gone??….. The class left when wenger and the board started disrespecting us and taking our class and patience for granted..it was time to rise up and save the future of our club even it meant dropping our CLASS.. would you call fans like Jon Fox and the rest who wanted Wenger out CLASSLESS…just because they wanted to save the future of our great club… Wenger took our class away from us and it is left to Emery to restore it…. You think it is easy to see your team getting bashed 5-0,10-2,6-0,6-1 every season and you remain classy and patient about it… NO WAY!!…. bet me even Liverpool fans won’t take that……..i know our CLASS will return because it didn’t go far away…Arsenal fans are born with CLASS we didn’t buy it and so it would always be with us….. PROUD TO BE A GOONER!!

    1. So glad to know that a good number of us loyal-fans out there actually believe that ‘OURS’ is #CLASSIFIED indeed…GUNNERS4LIFE!!!

    2. Rubbish, our behaviour was a disgrace, even though I wanted wenger to go I was not proud . Class is permanent not something you adhere to when you choose. Hope not but a couple of losses this season let’s see how much class you will display. Your job is to support the team , when they having a bad day we should be the 12 man but no not us we groan every misplaced pass – rather than understand and appreciate the attempt of what might have been a defence splitting pass. Arsenal fans need to grow up and trying singing from the strat of the match to the end …

      1. Arsenal fans stuck behind Wenger’s mediocrity for YEARS. When does their voice start to matter? Some fans own shares in the club, some spend their hard earned money every weekend, they deserve to have a voice and not blindlessly cheer on a club they see a lot of problems with. Did the fanbase turn pretty toxic, yes. But that’s a result of Wenger overstaying his welcome, refusing to listen to fan voices, and an Arsenal board too afraid to do anything. It’s not a surprise the structure of the club has changed so much as to never allow a manager to have as much power as AW did, because it was a disaster and it was impossible to tell him anything he didn’t want to hear when he had so much power. Thank goodness he is gone.

        1. Can we all move on from last season and the wegner years.
          Let’s enjoy on what did
Forget about what we didnt do
          Enjoy what is ahead
Get behind the squad of players and our new manager
It really is getting boring reading post about we should have done this and that and treating AW better
The king is dead long live the king

      2. Totally agree, unfortunately the 12th man can’t be heard very loudly since our move from Highbury.

      3. Iv, It is YOU who are writing rubbish. Clearly Wenger was regressing OUR club for many years past. A vast majority of fans wanted him gone and many thousands of hard pressed season ticket buyers , having already paid , STILL chose to stay away regularly until he was sacked. This was the ONLY way that Kroenke could be forced to listen to the voice of fans and FANS are the lifeblood of all clubs, which you seem not to know, shamefully. YOU are the one who needs to grow up and learn that without true fans all clubs will soon die. Since we love our club heart and soull, unlike those in charge last season, WE took the effective action that has now renewed OUR club and brought modern people and methods into OUR club. As you don’t know this , you are out of touch with reality,. Any chance that you are related to WENGER, THEREFORE , SINCE YOU SHARE THE SAME OUT OF TOUCH THINKING?

    3. “5-0, 10-2, 6-0, 6-1” every season? I don’t remember any 10-2 scoreline let alone having those scorelines every season. Don’t rant for the sake of it, regardless of how sensational you want to sound. Let’s try sticking to the facts shall we?

  2. It can only get better and better, Torerria will get a run against Lazio I’m certain. It’s just 2 Sundays away boys, we’ll kick start the season with a lot of eyes casting on us

  3. Good to hear Torreira and Lichtsteiner have joined the training sessions, also about Emery’s new system for the squad

But their first Premier League game will come in twelve days and the opponent will be Man City

If they can’t grab an explosive winger in the next few days, they will just have Aubameyang and Nelson to penetrate from the wings

  4. I HOPE WE ARE HEADING TOWARDS A GOOD AND RIGHT DIRECTION OTHERWISE WE HAVE TO GET THINGS SHORTED OUT BEFORE HAND FOR US TO HAVE A CHEARFUL SEASION

  5. Emery should be our saviour but Torreira is not far from it either. We’ve needed him for ages

Torreira is our first quality defensive midfielder in 15 years. Wenger would never have spent £26 mil on a DM.
We needed one disparately for over a decade.

Emery came in and thought the same thing. Emery has common sense and knows what’s necessary. He got Torreira and Guendouzi. He also thought ate defense needed strengthening so got Lichtsteiner and Sokratis.

Guendouzi looks great too. Looks like a fantastic backup and possible partner.
    Really happy to have both.

    1. I thought Xhaka was also hyped to be a high quality DM, when his Arsenal transfer rumor was very strong at the end of 2015/2016 season?

      1. Xhaka isn’t and never was a defensive midfielder
        Even Wenger said that.
Also he was hyped by Wenger only . nobody had heard of him.
        Torreira is a true DM
At least we saw how good Torreira is at the World Cup.

        Have some faith in Emery
Wenger is gone and is his philosophy and choices.

      2. Xhaka’s transfer was never rumored, it was a straight deal, dat happened with out much publicised.

  6. exactly….we are guarantee top 3….if we can tighten our defense…we stand a chance for the title

  7. I’ m happy with the squad we’ve got but I do not like the idea about selling our assets one by one and very, very cheap prices and slowly we have been transformed in to a mediocre team just for one summer! Every team in the league is selling players expensively but Arsenal is the only team in the world which is selling players very, very cheap! I do think something is going on in this club that is not seen in the public and I really want Arsenal fans to start asking questions to our bosses, like this one : Is this beautiful club going to bankrupt, is our club is going to be sold, why the hell we sell all the players that have a class under Arsene Wenger’s reign, and how the hell can anyone expect the team to develop, to be competitive to the others without top players bought in the transfer market, what will be our goals for the coming season, etc. There are a lot of questios to be asked and noone starting asking them! We can not be a stron team without buying one or two top quality players also I think when buying so many players like this wiindow they will need time to settle in the team in modern football success comes only if your squad is full of top quality and we do not have such quality right now. Ok, we have a strong team, but Sampdoria for example has a strong team, but this is not enough. Strkng teams need some top players to bring you success. Why nobody from our fans not asking for questions, nobody from the media is asking them? Arsenal is the only team in the world that is selling very, very cheap, so how can you explain it?

    1. 1) Arsenal have been selling relatively cheaply for several years. Its nothing new, its one way to make a sale happen faster.
      2) Most of the players that have gone cheaply had relatively few options about where to go. Almost none have gone to top teams apart from Giroud and Sanchez. Some have done better than they were doing at Arsenal, but Im not aware of anybody we sold having a mega transfer after they left. Gnabry maybe, but he chose not to renew, we didnt want to sell.
      3) Even selling a player relatively cheaply can help finances by dropping the wage bill, a salary of just 30k a week (relatively low by first team standards,) comes to over £1.5mill over the course of the year.
      4) The small amount of money lost on some sales is more than covered by prize money, TV rights deals and the like. Getting back in to the Champions league and getting through the group stages would gain Arsenal another £50mill a year.
Arsenal are one of the richest clubs in the country but they still lag behind some of the others in terms of merchandising deals and the like, so there is still room to grow the budget.
      4) I have absolutely no fear whatsoever that the Arsenal hierarchy are putting the club finances at risk. Its almost one of the standard accusations against Stan Kroenke that he is only interested in the money, that the club has to be self supporting because he will not put extra money in.
Arsenal are a rich club and provided the results on the pitch dont get any worse then they will get richer.

          1. No Sue, because he is a top professional and Arsenal has just recruited his previous offsider at Port Adelaide Tim Parham.
I have checked and apparently he is taking a role with a new expansion team in the A League in Australia. It is a coaches training and mentoring role and it is not clear whether he will be to undertake the position and still remain at Arsenal. Some British papers are saying he may be forced out because he was selected by Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery wants to bring in his own people. This is strange given that Tim Parham has just arrived at the Arsenal.

  8. Torreira is going to be the first name on the squad list every game. Him and Guendouzi can form a very formidable partnership. I wonder where that leaves Xhaka and Elneny

    1. we need squad players too

the team cant evolve only on 11 first team players and 3 subs

      1. ?yes John, Arsenal can’t keep selling players without replacement, when they have to compete in 4 competitions.

  9. The team is so congested and full of average players….
Is high time we start selling…..
Xhaka,Elneny, Ramsey,Perez, Welbeck and Campbell should all be put up for sale….

Martial is available, With 60million he will be released to us….
With the addition of Martial, our team can challenge for the Epl title…..
    Just imagine this line up….
    Leno
    Mustafi. Mavro

    Hector. Monreal

    Torreira. Guendouzi

    Micki. Ozil. Martial

    Aubayamang

    1. Maureen-ho will never sell us martial no matter how much the player wants to leave….except he’s getting a sanchez kinda player in return….
This is someone who blocked a never used Demba Ba move to arsenal jst for d sake of it

    2. Be my line-up too if we had Martial.

Love Guendouzi and Torreira together – really puts up good wall in front of our defence, lots of pace. And gives more freedom to our midfield & strikers

But expect Xaka will still get played

    3. LOL… I thought you just said you wanted to get arid of average players… and then you mention getting Martial !?!?!?!? Oh dear

  10. I was Arsene ‘s fan, I’m Unai’ s fan too! I am Valencia fan too and know exactly what will Unai Emery bring to our team! He will continue our former boss work in developing young players and pushing them into the first squad but it will be a very difficult period for our players to accustom to the new coach systems it is obvious they will need some time to do but I hope we will remain among the top teams in the world and under Unai Emery’s reign, but we maybe do not have the funds and a team that will be much more competitive by buying expirienced reserves from other teams left down from their pecking order! I really like Lichtsteiner for what he has done but can he be so strong like before, I think no. Can Socratis become a better player with us, probably he can, but he allowed a lot of goals to be scored in Borussia previous seasons, he need fixing, but Unai is the right peson who will probably try to fix him and Mustafi! I really think now we have a deep squad full of average class players and one or two really good players are needed, but selling someone from the first team will make us a mediocre team without much of a quality on the bench! I think two or three players can flourish in Emery’s hands it could be again Nacho Monreal if he stays with us, and Hector Bellerin, Lukas Torreira, so as Lakasette and Aubameyang of course because probably some of them speak Spanish, French but Unai will need time to learn his English because some players do not exactly know what to do on the pitch as we saw in both friendlies. It was a complete mess in some areas. In the beginning we must expect these three to five players to flourish under his reign, I’d like Lukas Perez too but he will probably not going to stay with us. We will be a good team but can we compete with the top four teams with this squad, I really hop so! Wenger by lleaving said that we need two or three players that will make us a real challenger for the title, and I expect that but we need some more players. I like Leno came here, I’m Leverkusen fan too?, I’ m very happy with Arsenal because all my life players from other teams come between our ranks, those players are all from my favourite teams and I have 23! Coaches are coming here too, so I’ m the happiest Arsenal fan in the planet but something
is missing one particular piece of the puzzle – Lionel Messi! ??

    1. You have “23 favourite teams”? Who do you support when they play each other? I don’t believe you can love so many clubs. Humans are not made that way. I have many teams other than Arsenal which I like or wish to do well, ranging from Ajax to Hartlepool United in standard and five others in this years Prem alone , being Palace, Wolves, Fulham, Brighton and Bouremouth BUT I LOVE ONLY ONE; ARSENAL. None of these are actual rivals of ours and I always want us to beat them all soundly, whenever we play any of them. I have never met you but IF you truly LOVE 23 clubs you must be unique in all football history, I’d say.

  11. This season it seems like we are ready to roll! Neme iudex in causa sua ,so I will not give verdict about the new season but,I’m optimistic we have quality and depth in the squad

  12. The system should be 4:3:3 with a midfield of Matteo,Torreira,Niles and mkhi, laca and Auba leading the attack these players play a very pressing game the likes of Smith Rowe can come as subs in the 6o,+minutes

  13. Will be 4-2-4-1 – with Torreira dropping back into defence when full backs charge ahead-

Seen Emery use this system before. And think it works great. And good fit for our squad

  14. Can anyone name athletico Madrid players apart from godin and grizeman, there you go all the team has is a great manager who gets 100% from what he is provided with I think with a new manager even with what we’ve got now we will have a good season, Trust ME

    1. Hello…. there’s more to Atletico than Godin and Griezman. Non of our midfielders have the quality of Koke and Saul. Juafran is a solid right back too and Oblak needs no introduction at least to arsenal fans. I get your point though, a good Manager and teamwork can achieve alot but Atletico has really got a squad. There are just unfortunate to be in the same league as Barca and Madrid.

      1. Mr Patrick, fancy forgetting Oblak!
Hopefully under Emery, Arsenal will become greater than the sum of its parts.

    2. Ehm, Mr Patrick, unlike you, some of us do actively watch other leagues such as Laliga. And Athletico Madrid have always had great players. Aguero, Falcao, were bought from them. Juan Fran, Saul Ninguez, Koke, Oblak, Griezman, Godin, Carrasco, and Sime Vrsaljko would walk into any team in EPL.

  15. Cech

    Bellerin Mustafi Mavropanos/Socrates Monreal

    Torreira Xhaka/Guendouzi

    Mkhitaryan Ozil Aubameyang

    Lacazette

  16. I think what he meant is that Atletico are not too far much ahead of us in terms of players quality. Auba is on the same level as Griezzman and Lacazette is better than Costa imho…Mikhi and Torreira are better than any of their midfielder. The only area they beat us squarely is in their defense and gk but that is because they have a coach who can organize the backline properly and not because of their quality. So, all is fine. Top 4 and Europa league is guaranteed this season

    1. Truth is we have yet to see if Emery is on the same level as Simeone and will have such an instant impact. Don’t jump to conclusions so quickly. how can you be so sure we will get back in UCL? Based on preseason?

      1. The dude is hopeful, you must not blame him. The primary problem of Arsenal in recent years has been fixed, and that’s Wenger…. Have you asked yourself why none of our players improved recently? rather they decline. It’s because Le prof chose to be a father to the boys and not a coach. Arsenal fc Is not an orphanage. These are the list of players I believe would improve under Emery, Bellarin, Mustafi, Xhaka, Monreal has been one of our most consistent defenders so no need mentioning him. Our whole team will improve under Emery that am sure of, better days ahead guys.

        1. Sorry Gifted, I don’t agree with your hyping of our players over their counterparts in Athletico.
Lacazette may be faster and silkier than Costa but the latter is a better and more lethal striker.
Mkhitaryan is not better than Saul or Koke, neither is he better than Carrasco.

          1. hold up a second…You speaking about Mkhitaryan with 20 goals and 32 assists in his last season for Dortmund?…You can’t compare Saul or Koke to Mkhi because Mkhi is MILES ahead of them. Don’t come on here spouting such bs. Costa isn’t necessarily faster than Lacazette but he is way stronger and Costa plays with a lot more aggression and is willing to put his body on the line. Don’t forget this was Lacazette’s first season in the epl and not every player adapts immediately and not to mention he was playing with an injury for a good part of the season. More clinical is debatable because Costa takes way more shots than Lacazette but I have seen Costa miss some absolute sitters that a 3 yr old could bury. Last season we had an underperforming midfield who rarely created any chances for him while costa had Fabregas and Hazard constantly finding him at Chelsea and he had Koke at Athletico. Ozil is the only one who looks for Lacazette really.

  17. Angello, as a coach some players will need a father figure in their life to guide them into becoming a good player and a man. In the case of Wenger it was him allowing is players to become spoiled brats, who partied, did their wrongs on the field and were pampered, with an anything-goes attitude. That caused the decline of Arsenal putting in faith in players who only gave nothing of their best.

The same players he pampered lost respect for him and arsenal became stagnant, began to rot, because we have a new coach immediately there has to be a new outlook, no player is sure they will be selected and most naturally everyone will work harder

  18. This is arsenal we have values we have our style of play which is an envy to many I just hope Emery keeps our tradition of beautiful play and results come guys this season will be different
