Two experienced top quality players Arsenal should try and sign

Arsenal should do all they can to sign either Thomas Muller or Dries Mertens.

Arsenal has been linked with several players since Mikel Arteta took over as our manager.

At the very least, a huge summer inflow and outflow of players awaits us. I do not know the exact players that Arteta would conclude are what he needs for his new team, but some players can walk into any system and just fit in.

With that being said, I believe that Thomas Muller and Dries Mertens are two forwards that Arsenal should be doing all they can to add to their squad next season.

Muller is coming to the end of his time as a Bayern Munich player likewise Mertens at Napoli.

The latter is already on his final months while the former has a year left after this season and Bayern Munich looks happy to let him leave.

Muller is an accomplished goal scorer, over the years there has been confusion about his role on the field, while I can’t say if he is a centre forward or an attacking midfielder, what I do know is that Muller can score goals and he can score all kinds.

With Muller on our team next season, our reliance on Pierre Emerick Aubameyang would reduce and we can add more goals to our team.

Mertens has scored over 100 goals for Napoli since he joined them in 2014, despite initially joining as a winger.

He remains a good crosser of the ball, but his eye for goals also makes him a good acquisition for us. The Belgian could become the best free signing we ever made.

Both of these players would be perfect for Arsenal and I truly hope that if we sign at least one of them.

  1. I am baffled to see how Muller would add goals? 14 in his last 2 seasons, 38 in his last 4 seasons. That’s an average of 9.5 goals per season over the last 4 years. That’s also in an easier league, playing for the most dominate team in that league.

Mertens is far more prolific, but we don’t need any more tiny players, and I’m not even sure how you get him into our system? Maybe replace Ozil with him?

I would prefer us to go for younger, more prolific players. The best way to ease the burden on Auba is to play him upfront, so he doesn’t have to come so deep when defending. He’s too good a striker to be doing that. It’s a waste. Sell Laca, put Auba up top, and sign another quality winger, or two, as we may need to get rid of Pepe before his value starts dropping even more.

    1. I was hoping the atletico Madrid rumours had legs. Swapping Lemar and partey for lacazette seemed like good business to me. Then we could have gone all out for koulibaly. That for me would solve 4 positional changes CB,b2b,lw and auba down the middle. Could clawback some of the outlay on koulibaly by selling mustafi, Macey, elneny and mkhitaryan

  2. Muller and Mertens are prime candidates for the Arsenal retirement home 🙂
4 month till the end of the season so do we actually need any one?
Unless we sell or loan we won’t buy any one.
The exception would be a promising youngster for 2m.
Otherwise the one more loan player we are allowed will be our lot.

  3. Have read that Mertens has rejected an Arsenal move.
I mean, the lad will be 33 in May. Moving to a faster league at 33 – a bad idea anyway, so good we’re missing out on him.

    Muller is a better choice.
His number of goals is actually pretty good because he’s not a striker. He can play number 10 or on the wing. To have a player who’s good at both could prove valuable…
In 963 minutes in the league this season he has 2 goals but a whopping 11 (!!) assists. That’s 1 assist every 90 minutes – exceptional even if the league is weaker.

The entire Arsenal midfield has 5 assist in the league – that’s 6 players combined.

  4. Maybe we should stop trying to paper over cracks and give Arteta and Co some time to develop this team.

Let Edu get the players Arteta needs and let’s build for the future. Stop gaps like Muller and Mertens will just increase the wage bill. We should be cleaning up this squad and then adding talent that will contribute to the future.

    Sell:
    Mkhitaryan
    Mustafi
    Elneny
    Xhaka
    Ozil (if we can)
Nketiah (if we sell either Laca or Auba)

    Buy:
    Bruno Guimaraes
    Couto
    Ziyech
    Ceballos
    Aouar
    Oyarzabal
    Szoboszlai

And in terms of defense, we should consider the fact that the center back position needs consistency and that consistency consists of two main CB’s, hence the reason Arteta sticks with the same CB pairing of Luiz and Sokratis. We should be thinking about the future CB pairing whether we continue monitoring Holding, Saliba, Mavropanos and Chambers and from those we pick the main 2.
We can only think about the 2 CB’s who will replace Luiz and Sokratis, if we think 1 or 2 of the young CB’s we have then we need to buy a CB. Until then we need to build some patience.

The starting lineup for next season and the future should be

    GK – Leno/ Martinez
RB – Bellerin/Maitland (Couto and Lopez being under studies)
    LB – Tierney / Kolasinac
CB – Saliba /Chambers or new CB
CB – Holding / Mavropanos or new CB
    DM – Torreira / Guimaraes
    LCM – Guendouzi / Aouar / Willock
    RCM – Ceballos / Szoboszlai /Smith R
    RW – Pepe / Oyarzabal
    LW – Ziyech / Saka / Martinelli
    ST – Aubameyang / Laca / Martinelli
