Video: Arsenal’s Alexis fires Chile into Copa America knockouts (plus video)

Chile reached the knockout stages of the Copa America last night, with the help of two Alexis Sanchez goals.

La Roja went into the match level on points with Panama in second place in the group, but knowing that a draw would see them through on goal difference.

Their opponents did not resign themselves to defeat however, and took an early goal within five minutes to send shockwaves through the 2015 Copa America winners.

Eduardo Vargas managed to rectify things before half-time however, netting twice to put Chile ahead before the interval.

Shortly into the second-half, Alexis added his name to the scoresheet, to give his side a comfortable two-goal lead, with a sublime volley into the roof of the net, but Panama were not ready to lie down just yet.

The Panamanians managed to pull a goal back through Abdiel Arrayo with 15 minutes to go, before Alexis once again put his side two-goals ahead on minute 89 to kill of the game.

Chile will now face a tough Mexico side in the quarter final, who are unbeaten in their last 22 international matches.

Argentina also made sure they made it through the group as winners last night, winning 3-0 against an already eliminated Bolivia side, and will now face Venezuela.

The other quarter-final match-ups will be the USA taking on Ecuador, and Peru going head-to-head with David Ospina’s Colombia.

The Arsenal goalkeeper helped his side to qualify for the knockout rounds by conceding only one goal in their opening two matches which they won, before being rested for the dead rubber against Costa Rica, which they ended up losing.

Do Arsenal fans rather see Alexis Sanchez knocked out of the Copa America to allow him to rest before the new season? Or would we rather he enjoyed a fruitful competition in which he can build his confidence up before the new campaign?

    1. As Arsenal fans we can’t say we’re surprised by Giroud’s shocking performance, the facts are there in black and white this is the guy who went 15 games without scoring a single goal and cost us a title challenge!

    2. I see a lot of people criticising Giroud. If he is the first choice striker for Arsenal it is not his fault- it is the manager’s and the club’s fault. Giroud is a 12 Million striker remember. Also we don’t play to Giroud’s strengths (crosses); He is no Suarez or Aguero and Wenger should have known that- when we needed a genuine striker we went and bought Welbeck- so I think the blaim should be purely on Wenger- for once he seems to be have woken up from his slumber !

Summary: Giroud is not a first choice striker for a team which has title winning ambitions but then he not the worst either;AS a second choice striker he is pretty good

  1. Payet is probably out of our reach now. Will probably end up at Chelsea or one of the Spanish teams. What a player 🙁

  2. If there was ever a performance that typifies Giroud in his 3 seasons at Arsenal it was tonight,he’s a good striker but will never be good enough because he wastes too many chances it’s no wonder he went 15 games without scoring!

    1. He hit the post from 15 yards out one of the best chances they had all game. Greizzman was left unmarked and good for him to put it away.
On another note the Chile game had about 30 chances 15 from each side it seemed like.
Looks like the Euro comp is much more defensive.

      1. there’s always one team just parking the bus in Euros. Not liking this expanded format. Should go back to being a select amount of competitive teams. Copa America has been way more entertaining so far. Euro’s isn’t going to be interesting until knockout rounds where we may still get a few snoozers.

  3. Alexis Congrats. Xhaka is the rave now. Two consecutive outstanding matches and man of the match in each. He could be a buy. But Wenger should know we still need a WC CF.

  4. Giroud’s wastefulness was the reason we lost the league in 13/14 (we felt the absence of Ramsey so much cos the winning goals were not coming; Ozil and Ramsey had the understanding.)

he was also the reason we lost the league last season and got eliminated from the FAcup.
    .
I feel for Ozil and Co. though.. Good riddance to bad rubbish

  5. Why so.much hate for OG. Someone made a comedy about the price bought him for let us be fare and not compare him to strikers that cost a fortune. He is avarage. He had several headers of target but getting your head to a ball does not mean it’s a gd chance. The only God chances he had ws the one where he hit the post and the cross that came from the left wing what he headed hat right.

Grzmans chance was perfect and as already pointed out he was totally unmarked and so close and right in the midke of the goal but even he did not head that ball cleanly.

OG will always play until France of arsenal get better strikers. The fault is not his that he is on the pitch. I wld put on an arsenal shirt myself if given the chance although I’m. More useless than cyan.
