Video: Arsenal’s Alexis fires Chile into Copa America knockouts (plus video)

Chile reached the knockout stages of the Copa America last night, with the help of two Alexis Sanchez goals.

La Roja went into the match level on points with Panama in second place in the group, but knowing that a draw would see them through on goal difference.

Their opponents did not resign themselves to defeat however, and took an early goal within five minutes to send shockwaves through the 2015 Copa America winners.

Eduardo Vargas managed to rectify things before half-time however, netting twice to put Chile ahead before the interval.

Shortly into the second-half, Alexis added his name to the scoresheet, to give his side a comfortable two-goal lead, with a sublime volley into the roof of the net, but Panama were not ready to lie down just yet.

The Panamanians managed to pull a goal back through Abdiel Arrayo with 15 minutes to go, before Alexis once again put his side two-goals ahead on minute 89 to kill of the game.

Chile will now face a tough Mexico side in the quarter final, who are unbeaten in their last 22 international matches.

Argentina also made sure they made it through the group as winners last night, winning 3-0 against an already eliminated Bolivia side, and will now face Venezuela.

The other quarter-final match-ups will be the USA taking on Ecuador, and Peru going head-to-head with David Ospina’s Colombia.

The Arsenal goalkeeper helped his side to qualify for the knockout rounds by conceding only one goal in their opening two matches which they won, before being rested for the dead rubber against Costa Rica, which they ended up losing.

Do Arsenal fans rather see Alexis Sanchez knocked out of the Copa America to allow him to rest before the new season? Or would we rather he enjoyed a fruitful competition in which he can build his confidence up before the new campaign?
