Video Extra – Atletico v Arsenal Highlights – Smith Rowe and awful penalties

Considering the bland pre-season games Arsenal fans normally get, the meeting with Atletico Madrid in Singapore provided a lively and interesting first warm up to the season. The Gunners put out a strong side for Emery’s first big game and we were mostly dominant except for a period after we got our equaliser.

And what a goal from the young Emile Smith-Rowe to put us back on level terms. The penalty shootout was memorable only for the weakness of our shots, with only Maitland-Niles hitting the back of the net. But at least Petr Cech saved one….

  1. I think the best part is the cheer for Ozil…

Rumored that Russian gg to sell his shares for our club…. a nightmare coming through…. there will be no more AGM for sure….

  2. I’d imagine Smith Rowe won’t be asked to play 58 games this season so presumably has a better chance than Jack of not being ruined… This boy will make Arsenal a great club. he will be the G.O.A.T . I’m super elated . I have never been so excited about a youth player. This comes close to that feeling though, more than The Jeff’s cameo 3 years ago.

  3. Let’s bin Ramsey . this boy already have a better understanding of the game that him. but we must be careful not to over – use him but I trust Emery on that. he’s not as fickle as Wenger

  4. I can also confirm that Emery doesn’t really like Ramsey as people think . he just wants him to sign a new contract because he knows he’s a good squad player.

    1. That is what happened to Wilshere, he was told about his game time and was offered less because he’d effectively become a squad player. Emery is up front about this stuff, I liked the way he conducted himself and put Wilshere straight from day one. These two situations are nothing alike.

  7. Lovely finish by Smith Rowe, when they slip like that you usually expect a tame effort going nowhere near the target. Done well to keep it down and it was a very good area he ran into. Nelson had a good individual moment with some good dribbling into danger area. Individually players done well at times. The only bit reminiscent of Emery’s PSG …was the Guendouzi – Ramsey – Lacazette move, it was also our best piece of play providing a great chance. Cech looks fit, he finally saved some penno’s. He made good saves, not like our weak shooting at Oblak of all people. Leno will have a fight on his hands, which is good news. Martinez, I don’t know why but I keep forgetting that he’s a similar age to Leno, I keep thinking of him as an academy keeper waiting for his first real shot. If he isn’t in our plans this season we should let him go. Last season he should’ve gotten a chance so the fact he didn’t does not bode well for this young man.

  8. How about a midfield trio of Torreira, Guendouzi and AMN? All this would bring energy, hardwork and are suitable for the pressing game. Add an Ozil or Mkhi to the trio and we have a balance of steel and creativity. Upfront, we are good. Abt Emile Smith, let’s not rush him into first team football. We don’t want another Iwobi like situation. So the boy should be limited to sub appearances and cup games for at least another season. In 2 years, he will have developed into the world class no. 10 that we are all hoping for. Good times ahead folks

    1. It’s criminal putting Emile Smith Rowe and Iwobi in the same sentence

      1. aww iwobi is a full international and hes just bn rewarded with a bumper new deal, deal with that boy, ur hatred for him can change his destiny!!

  9. Off topic; on issue of kroenke not putting money into the club. I think it’s a great we are spending what we earn. I don’t want us to be owning any owner money. Chelsea currently owning abramovich over 1bn pounds. What if he is no longer interested in the club anymore that is huge debt. Pls let get behind this team and at least make top four back to increase our budget. Let us not wait for a oil rich billionaire to save the club. Let go the Liverpool way support the team and gradually become tittle contender again

  10. So great to see the fire back in the bellies of Gunners all over. Yes Smith Rowe is brilliant and so is Maitland Niles, Nelson and Tutu. Play our first eleven as often as possible but always give these lads 20 minutes not 5 like AW. We have a really top squad in the make and if we can add a world class winger, we will be going for the lot. Hopefully, Emery will have a massive clear out of players worth some money plus loanies and use it all getting Nsoki and Dembele? I would start the game with Man City using all our new signings inc Guendousi. This means a few top players like Elnehny, Belerin and Monreal will be benched ready to come on. I would also start with Cheq just until Leno is settled.

  11. I don’t expect miracles next season, a new system and coach takes time to take onboard. I would love to see a new fighting spirit not the defeatist attitude of the past few years. Barring perhaps another one or two new players, we now have a squad with great potential and the future looks bright again. If three or four Academy players make it to the main squad it will be icing on the cake and I’m sure Wenger would be proud because he was the architect and we,if even-handed, should give credit where it is due.

When someone like Robert Pires, who was close to Arsene Wenger, praises the changes and sees the potential in the team it makes me more optimistic about the future.

  12. On re-watching the penalties, again and again, it set me thinking once again that most penalties which are saved by keepers are either on the ground or just off it. Pens high into the net are hardly ever saved. I have thought that for decades and were I a manager would get my pen takers to aim high and never on the floor, where he keeper has a 50/50 chance to guess which side. Once the keeper dives, which he ALMOST always does, he can NEVER reach a high shot. Or even a mid high chip down the centre as AM-N did and scored.. I ask you all to watch all sorts of penalties across the spectrum and see if you agree or not. Statistically, I am sure that high shots are much more likely to score. Of course high and in the corner is much the best BUT high, wherever, has a better chance to score than low. Common sense when you think properly about it.
