Video Opinion – Is Unai Emery capable of saving Arsenal’s season?

The big question for most Arsenal fans is can Unai Emery turn things around at the Emirates?

I suspect that most Arsenal fans have very little confidence in Emery being able to turn things around. But judging by the comments on this site it is definitely a hotly debated subject.

Youtuber Curtis Shaw has stuck up a video today asking that exact question and as usual, he makes some valid points.

Just yesterday I did an article asking if the players were good enough for top-four. Today, I suppose it was only natural that the same question is asked about the Spaniard.

Have a watch of the video and let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. Yes, because there is a long international break that can be used to prepare for the upcoming EPL games

    1. We were saying the same thing before the previous international break…no signs of improvement since and no evidence that results will be any different after this break

      1. Keeping Emery is wasting time. He must go. He has ruined Torreira, played Xhaka who is mindless rather than mindful. He is ruining Pepe, Lacazette. He plays ‘the wrestler’ Socratis and old man Luiz. Emery is ‘lost’ and should leave.

        1. Why will this international break be any better than the last one. I hope you are right but I can’t see something so miraculous coming to pass.

He (Emery) is definitely not capable of turning things around. I don’t see how they keep a Europa spot, top four is a dream.

  2. I agree with Gotanidea but Emery needs to start getting the starting lineups right for Premier League

    Our defence should be:
    Bellerin.Holding.Luiz/Chmb.Tierney

Midfielders: Torreira, Guendouzi, Ceballos, Pepe, Martinelli/Aubameyang

    Striker: Aubameyang/Lacazette

No Xhaka, Mustafi, Sokratis, Ozil. Niles for Premier league matches

    1. I see a major problem with this line up, especially in the midfield. Torreira, Guendouzi and Ceballos, they will be run over by most teams.

No pace, physicality and athleticism and they aren’t exactly brilliant with their ball control like Cazorla or have epic positioning and game vision like Pirlo to handle presses and find outlets to pass the ball forward.

They usually keep the ball at their feet for too long before passing, and slow down the tempo of the game, and can’t play proper one touch passes, which is absolutely necessary in the midfield in EPL if we want to have any chances to break through high presses and create chances.

We need either pace and physicality or near infallible ball control to have any reliable chances of penetrating through high pressing teams. With that in mind, we can’t start Guendouzi, Torreira and Ceballos, all three together in midfield.

That’s just my opinion of course. I would go with modified 3-4-3 formation as follows:

      1. Defence: Chambers, Sokratis, Holding

      2. Midfield: Luiz, Ozil Bellerin and Tierney as midfield diamond. Luiz as a sole DM, Ozil/Lacazette/Martinelli as AM, Bellerin and Tierney as RM and LM respectively. Tierney and Bellerin that much needed pace in the midfield. Ozil is surprising fast too. Luiz is well better in air, with distributions, and confident with ball at his foot to keep the ball moving.

      3. Forwards: Pepe as RW, Auba/Laca as CF, and Saka/Martinelli as LW.

Tierney and Bellerin can remain wide going forward allowing Pepe and Saka/Martinelli to cut in, or they can cut in themselves like inverted fullbacks and allow Pepe and Martinelli to go wide. With their pace, combined with Auba in front, any defense would struggle against that attack. Defensively, we technically have 4 CBs in the field with 2 speedy fullbacks effectively. I think that would suffice.

      1. I agree with you 100%. Another line that can still work is:

        \
        ——————–Leno—————

        ——Chambers—–Socratis—–Holding

        Bellerin——-Torriera—Luiz——-Tierney

        ——————Martinelli—————

        ————-Pepe/Laca——-Aubamayang

        1. I think we’ll have very good pacy runners in the above formation, but not enough brain to provide them the right balls. Also, we need attacking width higher up the pitch and without leaving our own wide areas completely open. That’s where the midfield diamond with proper wingers would help. When our wingers go wide, our fullbacks can provide cover more centrally, and vice versa. In any case we’ll have pace to recover mistakes.

  3. YES he will save Arsenal Leno, Luiz, Chambers, Tierney, Torreria, Guendouzi, Ozil, Pepe, Lacazette, Aubameyang, Martinelli keep this team for the next 3 games and then look how we stand if they are good to leave them alone.

  4. Yes he could, the squad is good enough and he just needs to find the right balance in the team and so far he changes things around, without results sadly. The question is, will he get it on time or after the top four is out of reach? Conte found the balance rather early and he won a title.

  5. Top four is out of reach. Chelsea and Leicester won’t slow down unless both clubs get freakish injuries to key players which is highly unlikely. Keeping the fifth will be a struggle.

  6. To answer the title post……………..Of course he is !………………….and I have just made Mother Terasa pregnant and she`s been dead 22 years……………….and Spuds have changed there name to Completely Unsuccessfull No Trophy`s……….C##T`s for short !

    1. I wondered what had happened to Mother T, now I know. Would like to see the Tottenham unveiling ceremony 🙂

  7. Deja vu all over again … sad that club is stuck in this rut … it’s down to greedy corporate indifference but for the moment removing emery is the only realistic option for moving forward

  8. Toxic fans with pessimistic opinions,
Well, as a fan, mine is to support the team ,so surely they will turn it around. Emery will improve his tactics and team selection for favourable results before the new year

    1. Pessimistic opinions? After seeing the kind of performances this season, it is only a realistic opinion that Emery is not going to turn this around. And no, he’s not going to improve his tactics, he is assured of his infallible tactics.

Emery’s only hope to see this around is if players like Auba, Laca, Pepe, Ozil, Martinelli, Saka etc show some individual brilliance and score freak goals and assists every other match. Emery’s tactics will not see us through. That my friend is a realistic opinion, based on observations and analysis.

And people who are able to see the problems and point it out are not necessarily toxic. We support the club and team too, but within the bounds of sense and reason, otherwise it’s bad for the club itself.
