WBA v Arsenal review – Weak and toothless Gunners get well beaten

Surely Arsenal would have prepared for this must win Premier League game away to West Brom, but you would hardly have known it with the way we performed at the Hawthorns today. Not only did Arsenal let the home side take the lead after failing to defend properly from one of their notoriously strong set pieces, we failed to learn from that mistake and did exactly the same in the second half.

Those two free headers from corners were bad enough, but on top of that we were slow and predictable in our general play and despite having the lion’s share of possession and more than five times the number of passes we hardly created anything apart from the equalizing goal by Alexis Sanchez.

That came just three minutes after the opener and it should have spurred us on but after the break it was pretty poor all round. If the two headed goals were bad from an Arsenal point of view, West Brom’s second was almost comical to watch if it had not neen so damaging.

Ospina was on for the injured Cech and he and Bellerin got in a right old muddle to allow the ball to be rolled in by Robson-Kanu. To complete our misery Alexis Sanchez went off after picking up a knock. Arsenal were done by the end oif this match and could well have conceded more. This time I am struggling to see Arsenal finishing in the top four.

Will that mean the end of Arsene Wenger?

  1. RSH says:

haha, you can’t make this stuff up!

    1. Arsenal007 says:

      LOL…totally agreewith you buddy.
This is a relegation run we are on now.
If we finish above Tottenham, we call it St Totteringham’s day.
What do we call Tottenham finishing above Arsenal? It looks quite likely to happen this year.

      1. Jokema says:

        wenger day

      2. muda says:

    2. Jansen says:

Level on points with 7th place Everton and we have yet to play them.

      1. Jansen says:

that’s actually 6th place Everton, if Man U draw tomorrow against Boro we will be level on points with both Man U and Everton.

    3. Gavana says:

“Arsene Wenger reaches decision over Arsenal future after Wesbrom game!
I think he felt that the players are not playing for him anymore.
Remember Chelsea last year and Leicester just few weeks ago?

In my opionion, this is good news!

    4. Disturbance says:

Arsene said he has made the decision on his future. In other words expect his new contract soon. Apart from that, the players don’t wanna play for him anymore and I would actually have liked it if they went to the board like Leicester did and say it’s not working out. Now we’ll have to replace an entire squad, because of one deluded man at the helm. What’s worse is I don’t enjoy watching the games, because we’re so predictable I just know what will happen. Arsene is a dead man walking and he’ll be walking here for 2 more years.

  2. Greg says:

Absolute rubbish what I saw today!

  3. Greg says:

Arsene wenger out / max allegri in

    1. Jokema says:

Allegri is not good enough, Diego simeoni IN

  4. vish says:

LOL nothing surprising. I guess finishing in top 7 is going to be an uphill climb from now on. Everton and Manu will surpass us soon.
Clueless manager, demotivated players, an owner who doesn’t give a s**t.

  5. raymondo says:

We were abysmal in the 2nd half. Don’t know whether to feel angry or ashamed….guess a bit of both.

  6. planner says:

Matersaka has to take his place I don’t care who goes back to the bench, as we can’t be conceding on corners kicks all the time. Koscielny and Mustafi can’t defend on set pieces anymore. Monreal and Bellerin are the only outstanding defenders for me today.

  7. gmv8 says:

Perez, Ozil injured????? Come on, they are running riot and doing what they want, Wenger has lost the dressing room and control …. really amazed Alexis is still there, but that shows what a professional he is.

  8. Greg says:

    Shameless display!

  9. N4NICOLAS says:

Nice one Arsenal, Nice one Wenger

  10. Greg says:

Arsene wenger please do the respectful thing and leave!

  11. Wayne Barker says:

We don’t deserve anything . Whole world is now laughing at us. These players are bollocks. I don’t want top 4. Let Manchester united get that, at least they will do well. We are joke.

  12. Fatboy Gooney says:

Lol and lol again ?? this was fully expected ??
Haven’t you seen this rerun enough times already? ?
We will snatch the Wenger trophy on the final day of the season with our muppets celebrating it like a word cup final victory ??? wait and see

    1. rd_gunner says:

I get the feeling this ain’t going to happen this time. Looking at the team I feel sad. There is just one person out there who is trying and the remaining 10 are hoping he will pull out something from the bag every game. It has to be the lowest point in our club – No confidence nothing. No spine and that is shameful !

      1. Fatboy Gooney says:

It will happen mate because it always does.
Its as if it’s all done deliberately to make the fans appreciate the Wenger trophy.

          1. Fatboy Gooney says:

Yup, but this fool doesn’t get paid £8.5 million a year to prove anything to a Dog with Gold fish syndrome ??

        1. Jansen says:

Even Wenger admitted after the game that the current situation has not happened in 20 years. There will be no 4th place this season.

  13. Arsenal_Girl says:

    Can’t wait for Wenger’s excuse(s)

  14. samtz says:

If we had a Manager, atleast he could tell his players how to defend those corners!!two identical goals, and what BOULD is doing at Arsenal????Can you just resign Arsene pls???

  15. Fatboy Gooney says:

It’s all about the ???? that’s all that matters!

  16. khangunners says:

Guys get ready for worse. We still hve soton and stoke away. This is pathetic. We had 75℅ of the ball, we had 735 passes(more than this) we are just passing the ball around without any clue as to what we are supposed to do. That shows wenger is clueless with tactics no player deserves any blame they dont know what to do in key areas. We reach the flanks and return the ball backwards?? We dont even cross the balls into the box what are we doing with the 75% possession we hve. What shocked me and made me cry why sub sanchez of???? He was the only way we could get back into the game. West brom with 25% had more shots on and off than us. Its time for some fans to wake up now. This season is gonna get worse and worse. How will we beat the top teams? Can we am 20 % we will win and 80% we will loss. This game just showed if Lincoln had championship quality not even premier we couldn’t hve won that game

  17. arsenal_canada says:

    Let me get this straight.
    – we don’t play attractive football
    -we don’t play effective football
    – highest ticket prices
    – wenger says top 4 is a trophy
    – our best player will leave
    – Wenger has lost the dressing room
    – our owner and board are USELESS
so tell me, WHY DO PEOPLE ACCEPT THIS!!!!
I’m putting some of the blame on the Wenger ins as well, they let them get away with it. WENGER OUT!!!!

    1. Budd says:

Can’t defend, can’t pass, can’t cross and can’t score but apart from that we were brilliant.

      1. synthiagoCazorla..HUMVN,Machine says:

…. at watching the sky to see which plane won “The battle of the skies!”… and yeah, I caught the boss taking a peek

  18. Greg says:

The only thing I will have to show for being a gooner at the end of the season “disappointment “!

  19. mark says:

I don’t even think Wenger can have any excuses for that performance.

  20. Stef_Hur says:

Guess the only way for Wenger to be sacked is not to reach the top 4 this year. This season is already over, I personally wouldn’t mind finishing lower this year if that meant that AW would go.

  21. RSH says:

this isn’t fair, we should only have to play non-league sides

  22. tweety says:

shame. not only the manager but the way some of our players acted. not only aw has to resign, but also he must take with him ramsey, the ox, walcot, giroud if i continue i will not finish. we are no longer a top team but a mid table team. what a headace for the new manager. he is going to inherit a load of rubbish. gooner = for ever

  23. Twig says:

It’s a surprising scoreline. The starting lineup looked really good. However, many of our players like Mustafi, OX, Welbeck, Bellerin and Walcott had off days. I couldn’t remember Bellerin sending a single cross into the box all afternoon.

    1. RSH says:

he’s barley put in a good cross this whole season.

    2. rkw says:

Not really … As soon as Walcott and Ramsey appear on team sheet u should know there is trouble ahead … Add an overweight welbeck an under confident xhaka a misfiring bellerin and a right back well past sell by date and bulk of outfield is lower table stuff … So no surprise only surprise is still lack of anger from paying fans ….

  24. Uzi Ozil says:

I decided not to watch Arsenal game this season after the 2nd leg defeat to Bayern. Didn’t see the game against Lincoln and decided to pass on today’s game. Will I keep up not watching Arsenal games this season? I doubt. Due to the love I have for the club, I will be tempted to see few games this season

Now imagine what the fans that go to the stadium go through. For the love of God, Wenger and some folks need to go. Finishing 7th or 8th is very possible.

    1. Jokema says:

Arsenal should be relegated, if that will improve the team, we can start a fresh

  25. marty53 says:

This season is going to peter out with us finishing 6th or 7th because we have a manager who cannot seem to motivate his players to at least look as if they are trying rather than just going through the motions. This squad of players need a complete overhaul by a new manager who can inject new ideas and get rid of some of the deadwood.

    1. But it looks like everybody is a deadwood..

  26. Ramterta says:

wenger how can you not sign a new contrac?.
By far the best manager in europe.
I think he needs an ambulance.
You cant surely get beaten like that and not be
    suffering from a coma

  27. Visibles says:

All this wenger talk has got me thinking, ‘Resign’ is really not the best word to mean Not actually signing a renewal of a contract, is it? Haha
    But anyway.. He should resign.

  28. Vishrutgooner says:

For the first time in my life… my beloved club…made me cry…

    1. Twig says:

      Cry cry baby

  29. synthiagoCazorla..HUMVN,Machine says:

And I’m not talking about today’s result. I’m talking the entire club -from the board to the fans to the management staffs (Boro, I see you).

I’ve got nothing against Wenger. It’s just that the man no longer have what it takes to make this Arsenal team believe again.

And people blaming the players… there is very little wrong with the amount of talent on Arsenal’s book this season -from attack to defence.

What we’re seeing now though… this is what happens when a group of players can’t seem to find motivation or belief from anywhere or anything.. not even from their manager.

    1. Jokema says:

Give the same squad to Ranieri, he will win EPL, give the same squad to Diego simeoni he will win ECL

  30. V.uren says:

Who sent the ‘in wenger we trust’ plane over ?

I’m amazed , absolutely amazed that there’s some idiots out there that actually want him to stay !

What is it about this side / season you’ve seen that makes you think ” I fancy more of this !” ???

    1. RSH says:

our rivals paid for that plane. They love Wenger

      1. V.uren says:

Even the baggies fans were singing ” we want wenger to stay” earlier ….

        It’s absolutely embarrassing.

To think , we pay the most in Europe for tickets …

  31. planner says:

I will always take Debuchy any day at right back. He’s a better crosser and a good dribbler on the ball.

    1. JAmerican says:

LOL I’ve said a few seasons back that I wished we had signed Aurier instead of PSG and folks hating the thought granted Debuchy was playing well back then too. Bellerin would have been our second choice instead of our ONLY reliable RB. I remember him crossing the ball on a platter for Cavani in our first game against PSG where we were lucky to escape with a point.

  32. Trudeau says:

First off, credit to our travelling fans. How they could keep singing until that third goal went in is remarkable.

I have never been able to hope that Arsenal loses but I think I’m getting close if it means Wenger will walk away. My god that was pathetic.

  33. JAmerican says:

I can’t recall a worst season for Arsenal as this one in YEARS! Respect where respect is due but it has never been any more clearer that a change is required in the summer. It won’t happen before that so you can forget about it as the manager will honor his contract.

  34. gunnerman8701 says:

My disappointment goes to the fans who still make time to watch the game at the stadium. I just check results on LiveScores. There are better things to use the time for.

  35. sanmi.marvellous says:

Immediately they cancelled preseason invitational Emirates Cup, I knew we were heading for a complete naked and trophy-less campaign

  36. Skills1000 says:

If Wenger has any form of diginity and pride, he should resign ASAP. The CEO and Board should put a phone call to Enrique and Allegri about replacing Wenger. If things continue this way, Wenger will destroy this club further and leave it in shambles.

    1. arsenal_canada says:

The CEO and the board can go with Wenger. EVERYTHING up top needs a shake up.

  37. HA559 says:

Players talking bull about fighting for the manager then go and perform in one game or should I say one half against Bayern. Today they are back to their self.

  38. RSH says:

Arsene Wenger: “I know what I will do in my future and will let you know soon. You will see.”

Buckle up folks, things are about to get crazy!

  39. aluz says:

Well done Baggies! Well done Wenger Out Brigade!

  40. nickw says:

If the board care at all about the club they have to withdraw the contract offer to Wenger. Otherwise we are doomed to be in a downward spiral for the next 2-3 years. Wenger may care but it is as clear as clear can be that he cannot fix the teams problems and he cannot motivate the players anymore. He has to go!

  41. Greg says:

The way how things are looking we may be heading for “Europa League ” football next season ! Thursday nights courtesy wenger anyone?

  42. Arsenal_Girl says:

    It’s over Johnny. It’s over.

  43. hecmanx says:

Who are those fans that are still supporting wenger after all this embarrassment? It’s very sad that some fans are still worshipping the specialist in failure.
Arsenal fans deserve better than what we are getting right now.

Big ups to the fans that made their feelings known by flying that plane, but the job is not done yet, so let’s keep the heat on by doing the same till they listen and wenger decides to leave.

Enough is enough of this nonsense, we have stagnated for many years now and change is required to move to the next level

    1. Jokema says:

We have stagnated since July 2006, thats the time Wenger should have left

  44. ras911 says:

Tune into Arsenal FanTv, only Arsenal related entertainment you will see today

  45. Robin Vanpayslip says:

He said he will definitely be managing somewhere next season. Feel sorry for whatever club that is

  46. Onochie says:

I think it is the Arsenal board that sent that “in arsene wenger we trust” plane up there today.

  47. planner says:

Thierry Henry has slammed Arsenal’s defending in a 3-1
defeat to West Brom and questioned the “desire,
commitment and attitude” of a badly underperforming side.

He told Sky Sports : “Three West Brom players could have
    scored [the third goal].
“I have never seen that in my playing career. Ever.

“I would not have liked to go back in the dressing room if I
did that and Jens Lehmann was still playing. He would have
punched me, hit me round the head, got sent off. He did it

He added: “Nobody wants to see Arsenal play like that –
    especially me.”
“It is not enough to have 77 per cent possession and you
don’t do anything with it. You play against a team with 23 per
cent of the ball and they create more chances, have more
shots on target. What is that possession supposed to say?

“You have to do something with it and they had nowhere near
the desire, commitment and attitude required to win a game
    in the Premier League.
“We can talk about whether Arsene Wenger or Alexis Sanchez
will stay, let’s talk about West Brom. You have to win at West
Brom and they couldn’t do it. Especially the way they lost, it
    was all about attitude.”

    I agreed with TH14

  48. marty53 says:

If Wenger has made a decision about his future why doesn’t he tell us now. To my mind all the uncertainty about contracts for him, Ozil and Sanchez has affected the club and should have been sorted ages ago. Surely we can’t still be negotiating with Sanchez, we’ve obviously offered all we are going to so if he is not staying then tell us now and we can all move on and plan for the future.

  49. Jansen says:

There is only one reason why he is not saying what he is doing and that is because he wants to stay. He will tell us he is staying after a game we win if that is even possible for his team.

  50. Gooner Craig says:

I don’t get why all this secrecy about the damn contract?! Just come out and tell us if you are staying or going ffs!!!

So glad I was out shopping with my family, lost track of time and ended up missing the game! Soon as I saw the score I just laughed! It’s so embarrassing now that there isn’t any point getting mad anymore

  51. luvdaguns says:

ozil made more money today than I will make all year… and i wear his kit

  52. Gooner Craig says:

This team I should a complete joke!!! Summer transfer window can’t come quick enough!

    – Cech: past it
    – Ospina: not good enough
    – Monreal: past it
    – Theo: inconsistent
    – Ramsey: what is his best attribute?? I don’t even know lol
    – Bellerin: complacent as he has no competition

    The bench was even worse!!
    – BFG why oh why was he even on the bench?!
    – Coq: useless! Can’t even tackle anymore
    – Elneny: why did we even buy him? What is he good at others than side passes?
    – Giroud: has he ever been good enough?

AW said Alexis was hurt in the 1st half but insisted on playing? Now he’s injured! Ffs Wenger!!! Are you even the manager anymore? Useless guy!
I used to love Le Prof but he is just making us all hate him! I lost all respect for him after he only brought in Cech! But AFC has been useless in the transfer window for the past 5-10 years!

So annoyed that I don’t even care anymore! Just want Thisbe season to hurry up and finish! (Felt the same way at similar time last season)

  53. stubill says:

There should be a sign above the Emirates quoting Dantes’ “Divine Comedy”:

“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here”.

  54. capricorn57 says:

Wenger or not, these players shouldn’t be losing at WBA. I think even with a new manager it’ll be hard to overcome the mental weakness/poor attitude of some/many players.
