Wenger – Arsenal were unlucky and as for the referee….

The Arsenal team that Arsene Wenger picked for the match at Anfield yesterday were absolutely awful in the first half and were extremely lucky to be only 2 goals down at the break, but although some players have complained that they just weren’t ready, Wenger believes that the slow start was because they didn’t play a game last week, and suffered from “a lack of competition”.

He said: “My regret is to have lost the game and especially in the first half, for the first goal we conceded from a direct kick from their goalkeeper. The fact that we lacked pace in our first half was down to, in my opinion, the fact that we had a lack of competition.”

But the Boss also believes that we were unlucky not to get a draw in the end as we were the better team in the second half, once we got some “competition” back, but I think he believes that the ref should have sent Emre Can off. “I felt in the first half we suffered from a lack of rhythm and competition, which I thought would happen. But it was a game of two halves. In the second half we responded very well and could have come back to 2-2. I felt we were a bit unlucky and a bit unlucky with some decisions as well. So overall, that’s what the game was today.”

Le Prof was then asked to expand on the referee question, so I’ll just copy the exchange directly here…..

on whether Emre Can should have been sent off…
You watch the situation and you give me your opinion. Or you ask the referee – that’s even better. You go directly to see him.

on whether he has been to see the referee…
No.

on whether he would like an explanation from the referee…
No, no, no. I don’t need explanations. The situations are the situations. Explanations will not change anything in the situation.

So, to summarise…. Arsenal were rubbish in the first half because the players had a week off. We were the better team in the second half and should have got a draw at least, but the referee was rubbish!

That sounds just like every after game interview with Wenger for the last month or two!

  1. There are no comments from Mr Wenger that can justify our dismal performance. We were second best for most of the game in every aspect. In my opinion, but not shared by the linesman, their third goal was offside but all things considered we were lucky not to have been at least 3 goals down by half time. Whilst our second half display was an improvement, Liverpool were worthy winners on the day. Team selection was abysmal and there was a total lack of belief from most players. I’ve supported us for 66 years now and at this moment have never felt so low. Only a sterling performance on Tuesday can help to alleviate the gloom although there is no way we can expect to stay in the CL. I’m actually beginning to fear that we won’t even be able to swep aside Lincoln next Saturday!

  2. -When we have a packed schedule we blame the recovery time and fatigue.
-When we have lots of time we blame rust.
-For the rest we blame the referee while adding that we responded well mentally.

When does Wenger actually takes the blame from making mistake after mistake. From tactical mistake to 1st XI to subs?
Let’s look at what has unfolded this season:
-NO tactical flexibility, playing against top teams or bottom ones we play the same 4-2-3-1 formation. And subs that leaves you scratching your head.

-Over usage of players: Iwobi, Monreal & Coquelin. Iwobi shouldn’t be playing so much for his age when you spent 17m pounds on Perez and you have a more proven player in Welbeck sitting on the bench for example.

-Under usage of players: Perez, Gibbs, Welbeck. Be it for inexplicable resting or something else. Those players should have seen more minutes.

-Lack of progress: Arguably every player but Ozil, Ramsey & Coquelin stand out this season. Every time Coquelin has played against top teams he looks worse and worse. Ozil hasn’t replicated his form from last year and Ramsey his from 2013.

-Record against top teams & a questionable transfer policy. Also how did we allow so many players to have only 18 months left on their contracts and so much financial pull. Also the Wilshere loan deal.

-Injuries: Cazorla suffering another season ending injury. Ramsey unable to play more than 5 games in a row or Ozil not fit for the full campaign and given extra vacation.

All in all if Wenger 2Y extension offer is based on financial success than he is more than deserving of it. But if it is based off on-field success than no. Also the board should be the one coming out and clarifying things (Not Wenger) and the only thing should be that they have decided to put an end to the partnership by mutual accord. They should apologize for the way it has gone and reassure that they will do everything in their power to put us back on the right path. That means making an overhaul of the board as well.

It’s been 12 years without a major trophy and after spending close to 100m pounds in the summer as the season progressed we went the other around. It is frustrating, shameless and unacceptable.

    1. The more I look at the pts table I get the feeling that if we do not go on a run now we stand a very realistic chance of finishing outside top 4.

I just hope it doesn’t take the board an outside top 4 finish to sack Wenger- any backbone? Rumors of Allegri being first option only if Wenger refuses the 2 year extension is bollocks – on what basis is he given an extension option. Our opponents will strengthen and we will weaken next season (Sanchez sure of leaving + Ozil may too). Plus all existing players will continue to show NO fight. We are just fighting the inevitable !!!

  3. Lack competition when we don’t play games.

Jaded and tired if we play too many games.

Seriously has it come to this.

Just admit it Wenger…. you’ve lost it, the players aren’t performing to the standard we know they can. Some players shouldn’t even be in an Arsenal shirt.

The money grabbing board don’t give a sh*t, as long as this club…. sorry I’ll rephrase that BUISNESS!! Make money. Then everything is hunky dory.

    Enough is enough

  4. And to think Liverpool were worried by us, they sat back playing counter even though at home. We should have seen much better because of the extra week. That’s why we feared Chelsea, Manu, that was Leicesters advantage season before. So now we’re to believe, if we miss the CL places, that will somehow swing back in their favor whenever we face teams who’ve played in it. I’m sure in Arsene’s head it’s a small window he’s talking about, twice in one week is disadvantage, once every two weeks would also be, but it seems like it might be only because it suits him to think like that for now. Liverpool were at home, they are a good attacking side, they also have a terrific record against top clubs. Losing to them is nothing to feel ashamed about. What bothers me, and others, is the players not putting everything into it. Having a player like Lallana out-scrap your entire engine room is pitiful. I don’t even want to mention the Alexis decision, I just hope Arsene’s feeling better soon.

  5. I think we were a bit unfortunate with the 3rd goal. We almost made it 2-2 with that blocked Sanchez shot. We were also the team that looked more likely to score. But then, the player selection was wrong to start with, so no excuses.

    1. And that’s not the first time that Wenger has bodged the starting lineup and it more than likely won’t be the last time either.
One of Bud’s chess pigeons companions could probably do a better job at picking the team, than Wenger.

  6. Did anyone actually see his post match interview? ?
He looked as guilty as fork, his eyes were everywhere and he couldn’t stop scratching the back of his neck. It’s either that or Maybe Sanchez put some itching powder down the back of his anorak? And that’s why he was benched lol

  7. I want to personaly thank Kroenke, the worthless board and Le Fraud for ruining the majority of my futbol weekends and more criminally the Arsenal brand I’ve passionately supported for 20+ years.

It is a sad revelation in the futbol landscape when I find myself resigned to the sobering reality that Tottenham are simply a better, more talented futbol club at the moment. Watching todays fixture against Everton I’m hard pressed to find any Arsenal players besides Sanchez and maybe Boss that would consistently slot into the Spuds first 11. Consider the magnitude of that reality, and although it is my opinion I honestly believe most open minded Gunners would reach the same conclusion.

Kane, Walker, Vertongen, Toby A, Wanyama(wasn’t good enough for Wenger), Dele, Llorris, Dembele, and D Rose(when healthy) are all better players than there cutrent counterparts at the Emirates. Heck even Erikson on his current form is more influential as a playmaker than Ozil, whose more interested in contracts than playing ATM.

And MP versus Wenger would be the quickest stoppage in the history of the UFC if coaching acumen and tactics were the applicable.

It has reached Defcon 1 @ the Emirates, but sadly the three headed monster continue on unfeathered and resolute in there systematic destruction of our beloved Arsenal.

  8. The fact that we lacked pace in our first half was down to, in my opinion, the fact that we had a lack of competition.” ? Absurd and irrelevant excuses.when we have many games in row it is fatigue the cause and mention teams like Chelsea and Pool do not have European competition in their favour. when we have 2 weeks to revitalise then is RUSTINESS. Come on! Admitted, you have lost it and step down. Any proud arsenal fan feel destroyed and hopeless today. this is not deserved. i just turned the TV and watching for few secs SPUDS are winning. They got Keane and Pochettino do not benching, ARE YOU MAD? cghanitng SPUDS fans and proud, WE? here we go, they are progressing we are regressing. Pep already asked for players and target 120 million in 3 players for next season and we are just in March. He like Conte already have their objectives in place but US? Scouts should be removed, same is some on the board then the coach has to go.NO AMBITION is making us a laughing stock. My local shop this morning was full of proud PUDIANS and rubbing in my face how sh.. we have become. We need to get our voice across and make sure we get a fresh start with new manager even if it take us 2 -3 years rebuild and making a team around ALEXIS.new manager with ambition will turn his head around. if he goes, then we are DOOM.

  9. Thew best thing that can happen to Arsenal fc is to finish out of Europe and not win anything. That will make Wenger and the board think hard and come out of the slumber.

  10. we are on a roll guys !, we got this, right !?. well according to arsene whinger we do .

  11. I’ve given up listening to Wenger’s interviews after games, some of them are so ludicrous. When we have started slowly in games one week he says it’s because we’ve played too many games the next week it’s because we had too much rest between games!! It’s always the referee and never his or the players fault. He just cannot see that some of the players aren’t good enough. As much as I dislike Mourinho it would be interesting to see what he would do with our bunch of under achievers.
