Wenger confirms Arsenal will continue with 3-at-the-back next season

Arsenal had a phenomenal run at the end of the season after changing to the new formation of 3-at-the-back (or is it 5?) and won 9 of their last 10 games. Arsene Wenger is keen to carry on that momentum into next season, and promises to have all his players fit and ready on the opening day of the season.

He was asked on Arsenal.com if he intended to carry on with these tactics in the next campaign, and he replied: “Certainly, I will have the continuity in the system at the start and adapt as well, because the system has to be the system that reflects the best qualities of the individual players and is efficient as a whole.”

“Looking at the moment where I installed the system and the results, you would say yes it has a positive impact, basically because it gave us more defensive stability without diminishing us too much offensively. As well, maybe because every player was in a position where he could express his strengths. That has had, of course, a positive impact on the results.”

That statement obviously begs the question as to why he didn’t change to this system earlier when we were going through our awful run of form, but there is no point in talking about ‘what ifs’ after the event. We just have to hope that we can keep all our best players and carry on playing them in their best positions!
