Wenger says Arsenal DO NOT need another striker

There are many Arsenal transfer rumours suggesting that Arsenal will be looking to buy another striker in the wake of the injury to Olivier Giroud, but Arsene Wenger has made it clear that he already has enough strikers on his books to cover the loss of our centre-forward.

The Frenchman said in the Mirror: “In England, as soon as you have a problem, people want you to buy (a replacement). Unfortunately I can give you clubs with plenty of players who every time they lose say they have to buy more. But if you give the number of strikers we have, it is unbelievable.”

It would be interesting for him to giI know Wenger has been known to tell the occasional porky when it comes to his transfer dealings, but it could also be that he is hoping that the doctors report today will be a bit more optimistic. He said about Giroud: “We came back on Saturday night and he was at home on Sunday. He had a medical check and we needed to have further investigation.

“The first news is not fantastic, but I am not a doctor. So I wait for tomorrow’s complete examination and decision for how long he will be out. We will inform you tomorrow afternoon, or night, at the latest.”

So it looks like we are going to be seeing many of our plethora of current strikers (?) tried out as our centre-forward in the coming months.

  1. Think. If Wenger comes out and says “yes, we must now buy a striker” he gives up the bargaining power he has in looking for someone. Panic buys that are advertised = higher cost. Plus we must qualify for the CL group stages first or he’ll likely “need” to conserve money.

    1. see people were saying this last year… he was playing his cards close to his chest, enter kim kallstrom.

dont understand this its not rocket science, if not cavani falcao.

then wilfred bony at around 15-18 mill, at his age we could resell and lose nothing when we get someone else, plus he is a upgrade to giroud, good injury record.

zigic agent is saying wenger is really keen on his player

william carvalho wilfred bony- 40 mill – hardly di maria territory is it

            1. Because they are BS and that would be plain plastic. I would support Arsenal and still go to matches if we were relegated 5 times over.

              1. Exactly…read book by Nick Hornby called Fever Pitch, excellent for any Gooner, truly loyal.

              1. Wenger is playing with his balls once again, I would not mind not signing a striker as long as we get a proper DM and a quality CB. we have sanchez, podolski……Hope we dont start with sonago tonight

        1. Surely its his agent trying to drum up interest for his player? He got released by Birmingham! Agreed tho if we get him id give up with football coz I haven’t the faintest in whats its about!!!

    2. We all know that lack of a reasonable striker played a big role in Arsenal’s failure to win the league last season as Giroud got worn out in the latter stages. Now with him out for long, arsenal should forget top 4 if they buy no striker.

  2. Poor planning from Wenger has left us scrambling in the garbage bins for strikers after Giroud’s injury,I hope the Zigic story is total BS enough is enough!

    1. Arsene Wenger won’t buy a striker and I’m sure. Whoever believes this BS is an idiot. As soon as I saw it was form caughtoffside then I laughed and came here to read about raging Arsenal fans wanting Wenger sacked.

  3. Its smokescreen hopefully

If not then we will not win a CL/BPL this year and we should sack Wenger for hindering our progression.

    1. Qualifying for UCL is what brings money to the shareholders. Nobody gives a $hit if Wenger is hindering your progression. For them progression is more profit than the previous exercise. But In any case, title is total rubbish as I don’t see where Wenger says we would not buy. Besides, why would he say otherwise just to inflate any price tag thrown our way.

      1. That’s BS what you are speaking m8. Stan Kronke doesn’t get paid and the board get only a few million quid a year in wages. After buying players like Alexis and Ozil, you have no right to make bullshit claims.

          1. There was 120 million in the bank. People say that 8.5 million for Remy is cheap. A few million quid is nothing with 300 million+ revenue

    2. The Welbeck and Zigic transfer rumours to Arsenal just worry me, i hope these are just jokes cause i can’t take it in that such poor players may play at the Emirates.

        1. One game and people were loving Sonogo, One game again and people are hating. I bet he can easily destroy Welbeck’s goalscoring record. A three legged geriatric dog with glass eyes and rusty roller skates would be just as effective as Welbeck.

  4. In 2006 Wenger ruled out a move for Zigic saying that he had a comparable player in Bendtner.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

  5. If I were Wenger, I would say we don’t need strikers (because prices will inflate a la Di Maria) and then go and buy one anyway..

The question is, will Wenger defy his critics and buy big, or will he stay true to form, and say we have enough cover??

    1. I fear he usually means what he says and if he does then he isn’t fit to manage our great club because only an idiot would say that we have an Unbelievable number of strikers’ without Giroud.
The truth is that without Giroud we only have the unproven Campbell and the clearly not good enough Sanogo, to play that role.

  6. what does the cheese eating surrender monkey mean by “as soon as” its been f***** 2 years and arguably longer even with rvp we needed more than the danish pastry…and the same goes for DFM….maybe he should become a doctor he would be better at it than managing a top flight football team thats for sure….and for those thinking that its canny talk by the prof to keep prices down…what f***** economic planet do you think we are living on here

  7. So alexis, who isn’t even a striker, and sanogo are going to last us until jan 2015… Oh and probably no new CDM either… And we’re supposed to be winning the title. Once again we fail to sign a striker And CDM. The two things we’ve needed for several seasons. I think this is just being done as a joke now honestly.

  8. This is ridiculous-

How obvious is it that we need a central striker! Have done so for 2 years. Girouds injury is just the latest red-flag to illustrate the point!

We turned down guaranteed goals from experienced EPL player in C.Vela at a cost that guaranteed a profit if we sold him later – and whilst I was holding out for better, I’d rip your arm off for him tonight-

Sanchez ‘may’ prove to be an excellent c. striker – but early signs are he will be a great winger, or 2nd striker in a 4-4-2

It’s almost as if Wenger doesn’t want us to be too good!

Damn it man, take Torres on loan if u have too, but get another striker!

  9. No one knows really. If we’ll sign at all, apart from probably the player, his agent and the selling Club, nobody has got a clue to who is coming.
A striker and a defensive player is imminent.

  10. Mourinho was talking some nonsense this week about Chelsea DNA; which got me thinking about Arsenal History the DNA of the club. The strikers and CFs who have made a difference for this club, in recent history, are Alan Smith, Ian Wright and Thierry Henry. Wenger worked with the latter two of these great players. What’s my point? My point is you have to look at the history of a club to understand the type of players we need. Wenger has a great CF in Giroud but no poacher (like Ian Wright) or genius like Henry. Sanogo is a work in progress and Joel Campbell looked decent in the World Cup (but will Wenger play him or loan him out again). We have not been the type of club to spend fortunes on players (Ozil and Alexis beeing exceptions to the rule). We have one of the best attacking midfields in Club football but we do need a forward player to finish all the chances that are created. I know we also need a CDM and CM but you can’t win a match without scoring goals and with Giroud out are we really expecting Sanogo to fill his boots or Ramsey to score buckets of goals. The question is realistically which Striker do we expect Wenger to buy. We need pace to make the most of Ozils talents, even with a fully fit Giroud we need a pacy forward and that’s not Alexis at this moment in time.

  11. My personal battles with the signing of Zigic and my diary:

    Stage 1- Denial

I thought – ‘no way can this be happening. Just the media stirring’

    Stage 2 – Anger

How dare Wenger. This is not on. Just buy a striker or play someone else there. Why are you signing this Birmingham reject too’?

    Stage 3 – Bargaining

May be it will work as a short term signing. Good for set pieces and defending

    Stage 4 – Depression

My life is over. I’m just going to sit at my desk staring into space.

    Stage 5 – Acceptance

We’ve been through worse. Let’s see what happens

    1. In this case i will never reach the acceptance stage. I will be stuck in the depression stage for eternity.

      1. acceptance…zigic?

we’ve not been thru worse than zigic….

bentdner is miles better. zigic is literally a league one flopppppp
vela is…why the hell did we sell vela,

its like selling hummels to buy jonny evans

        1. @muffdiver
I never heard of the guy, much less seen him play. Just checked him on youtube. He is one big, lanky somabich…lmfao

          1. hes sh*t , seriously dude u have no idea how bad he is.
im not exaggerating, really this time im not, hes trash

            1. Relax lads BBCSPORT said that it is BS to cut a long story short. Agents make false claims that big clubs are interested so their rivals nick their ‘targets’.

            2. @ muffdiver

You have to go through the first 4 stages of grief to get to acceptance. You are not ready yet.

                1. I feel proud because I saved a life 🙂 my m8 was about to jump off a bridge when he thought we were signing Zigic but I said wait we have Alexis!

                2. Its like when a girl (or in your case just the muff) breaks up with you but you didn’t want to break up. You still have hope – may be she will come back, may be she will put on lots of weight and become a munter that dies alone etc. That is acceptance. Like Zigic might get deported, or bang his head on the plane door or get an offer from Real Madrid.

                  We live in hope.

  12. No world class CF, no world class CDM and no depth in defense. On top of that obvious tactical blunders game after game. And Wenger wants to win PL. I say BS.

  13. LOOL zigic?!! I guess i was wrong about wenger getting someone like vucinic. Vucinic sounds like cavani now doesnt he hahaha.

  14. His been saying this for the past two season and even before that (RVP was usually chilling with Diaby in the medical room bar his last season with us) and look what that got us, 1 trophy in 9years. At times I question his desire to win trophies really with such attitude and stubbornness.

Even a blind man can see what Arsenal is missing!!!

  15. Wenger should have instead awarded a new contract to Lord Bendtner and it would not have made any difference. Zigic ?? Are you seriously fu*king kidding me Wenger ??

  16. So we have Sanchez on the left, Walcott to the right, Ozil behind, Ramsey through middle and then BAM!! Zigic through CF. HAHAHAHA!! Ohhh Wenger you are a genius.

  17. Wait for him to start throwing bottles and shaking his head when his imaginary strikers are firing blanks!

  18. Early good transfer activity. Lots of season tickets sold. More profit. Mission accomplished. Wenger back to his usual self. Wenger knows. LOOOLL.

    1. You know renewals start in April and the waiting list is 40,000 don’t you? Stop constructing daft conspiracies.

  19. AW has until the end of the transfer window….until then I will reserve judgement. He knows what we need and he knows what we can spend. All this other noise is media generated…agents playing to their causes…etc.
What’s critical is beating Besiktas today…then we look at what tomorrow brings.
    2-0 to Arsenal! COYG!!!!!

    1. Wenger himself has said we don’t need a new striker despite Giroud injury. BBC reporting we won’t get new striker, and likely the CDM we get will just be a squad player at best. It’s not just media chatter, it’s what’s going to happen. I’ve kept quiet bout Wenger for most the transfer window but reality is he remains an outdated manager.

        1. LOANS, not Zigic.
Wenger believes that with OG, Alexis, Campbell, Sanogo, Theo and the Prince, we have enough Strike power.
Just because Giroud is injured he will not spend £40 million and £150k a week on a replacement. What does he do once OG is back, sell him?.
Chelsea only have Costa, Pool only have Sturridge, as front line Strikers, and, they could get injured, have either spent that money on a back-up.
Wenger has said, apparently, that we will LOOK at loan deals, so there you are.
Personally, I believe Joel Campbell can do the job, but we need to change tactics/formation slightly.

  20. I am not one of those Wenger out brigade. But if Wenger fails to win the PL given the spending power given to him this season after 10 seasons of wait, he is not the man to lead us forward. Enough of his philosophical BS and economics.

    1. Liverpool’s net spend over the past 5 years is double ours, Man C, Man U and Chelsea more than 4 times ours. West Ham and QPR have a higher net spend over the last 5 years than us.

Man C and Chelsea have a better quality squad than us and bloody well ought to as well. Wenger would have to spend £275M this window to catch up and then expect his completely new team to gel day one just to give us a roughly 1 in 3 chance of winning the PL this year.

      Get ready for disappointment lad.

  21. why not at least play a fan as cf arsene? he would be cheaper than zigic, and generate more revenue……… that is the priority, isn’t it?

    1. We’re not buying Zigic, we’re not buying any striker. If Zigic is our only option I’d rather just avoid the embarrassment and get nobody

  22. @Invincibles49
Name a team who are not a business. With the exception of those run as “personal playthings”

    1. Every FC is a business. I know. But when you are given the money to spend and still manage to screw the transfer window, then i dont know man. I mean we gave him 10 fu*king years because we knew we could not afford it. But what is the fu*k is the excuse now???You sold a talented young proven Vela to make money and then you are going to sign a 34 year old free agent who even the teams battling to avoid relegation won’t go after ?? Is this the right way ?? Don’t blindly support Wenger man. JUST DON’T.

      1. @Invincibles49
I hear ya. i had never heard of dude, but checked him on youtube. I find it hard to believe that AW’s going after him. It goes against all he’s done so far in this window and for the team overall. I’m gonna wait and see what happens before I make a stink about it though.

  23. I hope THe F.A. Cup victory can spur us on to winning more trophies. Ramsey has been a blessing to us, we will miss him tonight, the OX can play CM role, but no-one at Ramsey’s level in the team at the moment. I would love to see Gedion Zelalem being given a chance. The talking point tonight will be who will play up front. I can’t stand Chelsea but they did go about their transfer business in an efficient manner – world class forward, world class playermaker – job done. I love the invention that Wenger has made his hall mark in the Arsenal teams he has made and am glad to see a toughness to the team as our recent draw with Everton showed. But we would not be in these pickles in the first place if Wenger would just stand back a moment and address the weknesses in the team CDM, CB and ST.

  24. Not having money to spend is one thing, but having money and not using it to improve the team is another.

Sanchez has been the only real addition to the team. Debuchy, Ospina and Calum were replacements.

We NEED a CDM and either striker or LW

    1. No they weren’t. Sanchez is an addition, Ospina replace Fabianski, Debuchy replaced Sagna, Chambers replaced Vermaelen, Campbell was an addition and so was Bellerin. Fact is Campbell and Alexis make the squad 2 players bigger and with a DM that is 3.

        1. Look the reason we simply replaced is because we are already on our limits, we already have our maximum 25 on the champions league a list and yet ospina, Walcott and ryo are not even on it. Sure if we get through tonight Walcott and ospina will be promoted into the a list, probably at the expense of macey and coquelin. However to bring more in will mean leaving more out, giroud and miquel could be dropped and ryo left out, but that still only makes room for 2 more and one would need to be association trained, if not there is diaby and zelalem.

  25. Manolas: “Thank you to the president who respected my choice of going to play in Rome, rejecting better transfers for Olympiacos.” Manolas: “Thank you to the president who respected my choice of going to play in Rome, rejecting better transfers for Olympiacos.”

what a clown arsenal IS/WAS & ALWAYS will be greater than roma hope we meet in cl you & forehead will learn 2 respect us

        1. @leo
And you don’t think he had good reason to? Dude did try his best, at least. The fans were ruthless and never gave him a chance. Neither did AW. Look at him not. He will no doubt come back to bite us one day sooner than we think…
          I ain’t mad at him.

        2. You talk bullshit as always. Gervinho’s words were taken out of context so that retards like you justify your stupid rants at him the whole time he was at the Emirates.

    1. Why don’t we go for benatia? How’s the perfect time Roma don’t need to replace him as they bought manolas and astori so benatia is available and quality. He is better than merts and kosci

  26. I hope wenger leaves next season if we don’t win the pl title we need someone who has hunger to win like simmeone/klopp .Wenger no longer has that desire & we may never win anything big under him 4th place & if lucky a carling /fa cup

  27. Will judge this window next week but as it stands only top 5 is possible if wenger fails to bring in a cb/cdm & cf this transfer window is a flop despites arrival of sanchez

  28. Just sign Carvalho, a backup CB (Alderweireld?) and play Podolski and Sanchez upfront.
    —————-Chez——————
    Deb – Chambo – Kos – Monreal
    Rosicky – Carvalho – Ramsey–
    —————-Ozil——————-
    —–Sanchez——Podolski——-

You can rotate Carvalho with Ramsey-Flamini, Ramsey/Rosicky with Wilshere/Diaby, Ozil with Cazorla, strikers with Ox-Walcott-Sanogo.

If Wenger decides to stay playing with a lone striker, I suggest we sign Wilfried Bony. Incredible composure and physical strength, suited and adapted for PL football in crowded boxes and 20 million.

    1. Pretty good suggestions and i completely agree with the signing of Bony. For the lone striker role he suits our playing style much better than many

    2. Carvalho is very clumsy he is a more powerfully built flamini who gets allot of cards aswell I watched his last game for sporting and he look awful plus he got red carded. Go all out for Vidal

Alderwield I’d love to have as he can play rb very well aswell. The only thing is he is leaving on loan because he can’t break the x11 cb partnership. Would he have the same problem here? Go for benatia

I wouldn’t mind eto for a season he won’t disrupt as he know he ain’t a regular striker and cpis vastly experience, but I agree with bony we will have a free run at him

  29. wenger also said jenkinson would fight with debuchy for his place, we all know what happened.

    p.s
this cavani rumour is refusing to go away, although i think reus is more likely. i’ll take either one.

    1. zero…..

      ageing

      not a big name

      not a big tag….

      doesnt guarantee goals….

      not world class

    2. On a scale of 1 to 10? Negative infinity. Lie down and picture ”bad” in your mind, then imagine a hybrid of Andy Carrol and Park Chu Young but at least 10000 times worse.

    3. Put it this way:

Cavani, Suarez etc. at their best are 9-10.

Giroud at his best is 7.

Bendtner at his peak would’ve been maybe 5-6.

      Zigic is – 4.

  30. If he does not buy and plans to use Podolski as a striker I can still forgive him.. Poldi is a quality finisher and has proved it time and again when given the opportunity.. and, if this is trick to keep the prices down and then go for a star striker I applaud Wenger for that.. However, if he says I don’t want striker and signs Zigic I give up yet again this year.. FA cup was players determined to win something but the third option is foolish if he resorts to it..

    1. I also think that the agent is advertising his player and creating some attention to see if any other club offers him a contract.. however, Wenger has always proved the fans wrong.. So have to wait and see.. If he signs him I think we should start it again #WengerGo campaign

  31. This whole Zigic thing is clearly just silly rumors from the agent. We should know this by now with the shear number of players linked with us over the years. Arsenal is the number of club a player could be linked to and never join.

    1. Yes, out of all the 100+ rumours linking a player to us this is the one we find most credible!

  32. Wenger is more like some bs economist rather then a sports men. The goal is always to get max gain from minimal investments.

There are people like Fergi and Moro, who think and breath only for football and Glory. And there is Wenger who finds only joy in managing money.

I remember Fergie manipulating the media, the refs, kicking players in the nuts, only for the sake of winning. I hated that guy so much but he was someone who deserved respect as he knew how to do his job. Him losing to Barcelona, the camera zooms to him. His fist is shaking like mad, bec oh his desire to win and not to lose. Thats the football spirit.

Moro, is so cocky towards Wenger bec. during all those years, He managed to beat Wenger every time. And last year it was a trashing of 6 goals. How can people forgets this?

Have you ever seen Moro trash tllk to Fergie? Nope, bec he knew he was the shet.
