What is Wenger playing at with Wilshere captain comments?

It has been widely reported lately that Arsene Wenger told Jack Wilshere last summer that he should look for another club as Arsenal would not be offering him a new contract at that time. But Jack decided to stay, regained his form and fitness, but which obviously persuaded Wenger and the Arsenal heirarchy to offer him a new contract after all but on a reduced weekly wage but with performance bonuses if he managed to stay fit in the long term.

It looked like Jack didn’t like that idea, and he is now considering offers from elsewhere despite his wish to never leave the Gunners, which he has made quite clear many many times this season while waiting for Arsenal. Although the Gunners are still slight favourites to persuade Jack to stay he is only even money to go elsewhere, with Everton hot favourites to pay him the 8m GBP as a signing on fee. That seems a very good bet, especially if you use the Pinnacle VIP code to get free money. It’s a double your money bet and looks like the most likely outcome at the moment.

But it seems that Wenger still wants Jack to sign the reduced contract, and now that Jack has succumbed to another injury problem while away with the England squad the Boss must think this is a good time to think about whether his new contract is actually rather fair….

So Wenger has now come out and announced that Wilshere should not just be staying, but would be offered the captains armband if he does stay at the Emirates. Wenger told beIN SPORTS: ‘He was born at the club basically.

‘He has a long history with the club, strong link with the club.

‘Jack Wilshere on the pitch is a big quality.

‘Apart from his technical top qualities he has personality and is in the right place on the pitch, and now with the maturity to organise around him.

‘That’s why I played him central.

‘I just thought the combination of history, the fact that he’s a long-term player for the club, the fact that he has experience and knowledge now, I trust now to make him captain.’

So is Wenger just hoping that this new injury will put other suitors off? The Boss is either desperate for Jack to stay or he is just winding us all up…

  1. Wilshere is an arsenal man through and through.

injuries are his main problem other wise would make a good captain.

ramsey is the future arsenal captain.

    1. maybe, just maybe, in this awful situation for Jack, Wenger is trying to give him some support.
Perhaps he should have told him that this further injury now makes his current contract offer null and void.
Then ask him to find another team before the summer.
If that happened I guess you would issue a subject castigating the club for not supporting their players.
      Lose lose situation either way.

      1. Like he did with Walcott when making him temporary captain, eh? Wenger uses the captaincy as a bribe to make players stay, rather than importing players who actually have leadership qualities. Our penchant for being wimps and getting bullied over the last decade is scandalously widely acknowledged throughout the British football world. Wenger has zero idea of what leadership even entails. He thinks, in his mental bunker, that ONLY HE has the answers and we all know how that has gone down with the fanbase. Lastly Ken, if Wenger is as astute as you make out , how come he has got himself the title of the most hated top club manager among it’s own fans and also that all its rival fans, passionately want him to remain, and continue ruining us. They even sing about it regularly, mockingly, as in” Arsene Wenger, we want you to stay”. This is no way to run a top club!

        1. Jon

you need to have a sit down with Mr Wenger and sort out your personal issues with him….

          1. And John maybe just maybe you should you know take your head out of you know where and listen to what Jon is saying because he is 100% correct.

            1. John Ibrahim is not Hafiz, Hafiz was always negative v AKB’s and only went easy on English players. He loved printing the miss-fires and constantly trashed Wenger, I think that was the case. Or else am mixing him up with Davindz.

    2. Please don’t say that about Ramsey, because you’re implying he’ll be here for many more years. Haha.

  2. Alright am a big big wishere fan, I almost cried when I saw him captain the team against chelsea in th carabao cup. Letting jack leave is damnation.

  3. He’s setting him up to move away. Our recent captains have left after given the armband. Fabregas, van Persie, Vermaelen etc.

  4. Just watching “Henry, the greatest”

We was the best in the world and IMO would make a tremendous manager because he’s a winner, credit to wenger for bringing him and now let’s hand ? the job to him

    1. Would love for that to happen John but I believe it’s a bit too soon for him to take over at this time.We need an experienced Manager/Coach that is able to hit the ground running ( that’s providing of course Wenger is not here next season). There is the two Germans at Hoffenhiem and Shalke as well as Jardim at Monaco who are more up and coming but would relish I’m sure the opportunity if it was offered. But I’m not sure these would wish to work with a club Legend such as Henry. That would just be more added pressure for them. But someone such as Allegri would not only take it in his stride he would I believe relish the chance to have somebody next to him that understands the values of the club (starting with of course the fact we f**king HATE finishing behind those Pikies up the road and the very minimum we must achieve is ending the season higher than them).
It will be an interesting choice whoever gets the role and when the job actually becomes avaliable

      1. Phil, Agree with you regarding Henry on his own, but what if we brought Vieria back from America and Bergkamp in as joint coaches with defined roles?
Put Henry alongside him in the Bould role and, with Lehman already in situ,we would have the backbone of the Invincibles.
They must have complete respect for each other and I think could definatly work together.
I admit it might be top heavy, but when the change comes, it seems the ideal opportunity to use these men and their knowledge of the club.

        1. why not a panel of coaches instead?

          Allegri, Simone and Jardim

assisted by Henry, Viera and Lehmann

brings a variety of defensive, attacking and disciplined strategies and options

        1. Of course he was best you ignorant fool. He competed in most goals category, he also competed in most assists category, most dribbles, and scored world class goals not just box goals like Kane. Also defending and refereeing was different to today’s game, Kane would be an average player back in those days playing for a mid table club that crosses high, likely still spurs. Henry’s peers gave the title to Henry, he was a one man wrecking ball.

  5. dont think a squad player should be captain. Arsenal continue to cheapen the meaning of being captain. Wilshere constantly injured and shouldn’t be starting if Arsenal mean to win anything in the future. I’d way rather Monreal or Kos be captain next season.

      1. yeah, the role has mostly just lead to disaster. The last captain who even had an ounce of leadership qualities was Arteta, and I think he was only officially captain for one season. Vermaelen, RVP, Fab, Henry all left rather quickly after getting the role. I hope when a new manager comes they are able to restore some meaning to it. Cause this squad needs a committed leader on the pitch for damn sure.

  6. Quickly, REPORTS from Germany says arsenal have agreed a deal with Thomas Tuchel, A good guy in his own right but I say NO, our man is Luis Enrique. Listen Tuchel is not a good coach defensively, turned dortmund into a soft team, playing a narrow 4321 with no width or penetration, a lot of sideways passes until the players turn blue black in the face. He was used to wipe the floor by leanardo jadim in the champs league with a criminal defensive display. Who goes ahead and buys a Marc batra to play central defence for a big team? On the other hand, Enrique brought umtiti ( who needs no intro now) and Rakitic who stays centrally and plays centrally ( Ramsey, am looking at you). Enrique barca needed 5-6 touches of the ball to kill you, very sharp and direct. Besides tuchel is another softie like wenger but enrique has the class, personal and tactical knowledge, a no- nonsense guy that the club needs. Pls arsenal, let’s get this right.

  7. A major problem with Ramsey and Wilshere is that they are both injury prone. If they had not been, they would have been better probably. So they can’t be starters next season. A major problem with Xhaka and Eleny is that they are just good enough to come off the bench NOT to be permanent starters.

We need two central midfielders of the same quality as Cazorla, Rosicky, Viera, Silva, Edu, Petit

None of our central midfielders would start for City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs. They all have players better than ours ie
Kante, Matic, Fernandino, Gundogan, Pogba, Wanyama, Sissoko, Can, Henderson etc

We also need creative and defensive midfielders to get the best from Ozil. Ozil is quite lazy. He does well when he gets the ball but needs someone to get the ball to him. Cazorla got the best out of Ozil. Cazorla owned the box2box position

  8. You can’t be respected as a Captain if you aren’t a key player or a player that plays regurarly. Can you imagine motivating screaming while you can do shit for yourself?

Our best Captain has to be Mustafi, Cech, Kos, even Xhaka/Ramsey

  9. Sadly willshere’s case is pointless. He hasnt been the most responsible athlete. he has not eaten well, he has not taken care of his buddy, he has not rested well. Now we see the consequences, and things are not going to get better for him. I believe we need to let him go now when he is still useful somehow; or we could go after federer and nadal’s professional nutritionists. I’m sure they will bring him back on top and four years to stay

  10. A captain should ideally be a leader who can gather the team to fight, who can show the way by setting a personal example in matches, in training and off the pitch.
To be honest, I don’t really see a lot of candidates.

  11. I don’t think Jack is injured unless it’s just some bruising he’s trying to heal. He is trying to earn a contract, and England might need him for more important games. It’s normal for players to report injury when this type of situation crops up. They all mostly do it, the better players for England. England don’t have many players like Jack that can play high tempo passing game in final third and CM. For me an injury would mean operation before some weeks on sideline, this is not the case and hopefully he’ll last the season. If he does do that well then whatever work he is doing now and however careful he’s been he should stick to that regiment. I’ll be honest though, I don’t believe Jack will stick by any extra care or living a healthier lifestyle because that’s what he should have done from the beginning. He looks like he enjoys some bad habits, smoking and clubbing, junk food, stuff like this is best avoided but I don’t believe it stops there neither.

  12. When i read stories about jack, i’m always fed up. This guy was suppose to be our messi. I just don’t want him to leave, not now or ever
