Which goalkeeper could replace Arsenal’s Szczesny and Ospina?

Arsenal are strongly linked with the sales of both Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina this summer, but who should replace them?

The Gunners played out last season with Petr Cech as our main goalkeeper, and with the Colombian used as backup, as well as in the Champions League and a majority of cup competitions. We also had Emiliano Martinez in the squad as the third option.

Ospina is believed to be heading for the exit door this summer, with former Chelsea and Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri looking to bring him back to France with Nantes. The 28 year-old is believed to be keen on earning regular playing time as he looks to cement his place in his international side for next summer’s World Cup competition.

Wojciech Szczesny is also believed to be close to agreeing a move, having spent the past two seasons impressing in Italy. The Polish international is being eyed by Italian giants Juventus, who are on the look-out for a long-term replacement for Gianluigi Buffon, and are said to have agreed personal terms with the shot-stopper, while a fee is yet to be agreed with his club as of yet.

Both exits would leave us with Martinez and Petr Cech available only, and we would no doubt need to bring in another goalkeeper, but what level of player should we be looking at?

The former Chelsea goalkeeper put in a number of questionable performances last season, and there were calls from fans for him to be dropped in favour of the departing Colombian. It is yet to be seen whether we will be eyeing a replacement for him as number one, but I would love to see him challenged for the first-team spot.

Gianluigi Donnarumma would be the ideal signing, but he looks likely to complete a switch to Real Madrid, but the idea of signing a top young talent who could challenge Cech for the first-team role before usurping him in the near future would be ideal. Emilio Martinez looks like he could well grow into a Premier League level goalkeeper in the future, but unfortunately I don’t think he is trusted as our second-choice option, let alone first.

Do Arsenal need more goalkeepers with Ospina and Szczesny going? Is Martinez ready to make that step-up? Does Cech need to be replaced or challenged?

  1. Martinez of course. Hes good ^^^. The next in line will probably not play anyways so let it be a young talent who can get gametime and blossom

  2. Fab Ian ski 🙂
I’d love to see us go for but land with a view to him being our first keeper soon.

  3. Martinez had none of that fumbling business which automatically puts him ahead of those two for me. He will make mistakes, but I don’t see him rushing out and punching the air too often. I don’t see him keeping an averagely powered shot in play by using fists instead of palms, not all that often at-least. I don’t see him shriveling very often whenever big opponents are going up for the same ball he is. For as good as Ospina’s reflexes are, I honestly cannot see how so many Arsenal fans can speak so highly of him. Especially seeing as our fan base has the sharpest of tongues to go with the highest of standards, they let nothing off the hook, nothing except our GK’s department it seems. I can only imagine that they never dared play in goals for different reasons to why I never dared. I never done it because I knew I didn’t have safe hands, I could only punch things instead of catching them. I knew that when I went up for a high ball, that if people were running in for the same ball, I’d protect myself rather than the ball. I admitted as much to the team, here I can’t play in goals, so that way I wouldn’t get a rollicking if it came to it. I think of Szczesny the same way as Ospina, but I’d give him some benefit of doubt for being away. Though I’d still worry.

  4. Arsenal need a replacement for Cech, someone who can challenge him for the first team spot if we lose Ospina and Szczesny. I don’t believe Martinez is good enough yet though he could be in the future.

  5. I think we should get a goalkeeping coach as well, before Cech came to Arsenal he was doing really well at Chelsea. Before we signed Ospina he was doing really well at the World Cup and Szczesny did incredibly well at Roma. Anybody else seeing the same thing?

  6. Martinez for now, butland will only come if guaranteed first team selection, that will be next season of you ask me..

  7. This time we don’t need martinez because we want a solid team not try and see this season.want a team that will fight for the league and all trophies this season .

  8. I don’t understand why is Arsenal paying for its army of scouts when at the end of the day they buy the obvious players that everyone knows?!
When have our scouts unearthed a quality youngster, like the Atletic M..or Monaco scouts do on regular basis?!

  9. Let’s get sergio rico for wojech and get alban lafont and maybe oblack since cech is getting old
