Who made up the Arsenal contract rumours? Surprise answer….

It was probably due to the boring international break that the media have jumped on the Arsenal rumours about Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez being given a pay rise and being signed to new contract extensions, but according to Arsene Wenger they haven’t even been mentioned so far and won’t even commence talks until the New Year.

Here is what Wenger said on Arsenal.com: on Ozil’s contract…
We have not started to talk about that with Mesut.

on Alexis’ contract…
We are in the same situation. At the end of the year they have two-and-a-half years left on their contract so we still have some time. We are not in a hurry. Of course we want them to stay here at the club and we will start the negotiations at some stage. At the moment we have not started them.

on if he will start to begin talks from New Year to summer…
From the New Year to the summer we will certainly start it with all the players who have two years to go at the end of the season.

So I have been looking at all these rumours since yesterday and decided to find out where they originated, or in other words, who made up the story in the first place!

When I first looked yesterday afternoon most of the stories quoted The Mirror as being the original source, so checking Google News I found that The Mirror, The Mail and Caughtoffside had all reported it in the space of ten minutes, so I thought I would have to check posting times to see who came up first. I did that this morning, and the Mail and Caughtoffside both quoted the Mirror as the source so I thought I had the answer, but I was wrong!

While checking these I then found a Metro report which was even earlier

The Metro report said that they got the information from ESPN, so clicking on that link I finally found the culprit. ESPN had even made twice the mileage out of their inventiveness, as they did one story from sources about Sanchez (over a week ago would you believe) and then followed it up a couple of days later with the Ozil one. The Metro then took them both up together and did the double story, which was then copied by the Mirror, etc, etc……

We always thought we knew who were the main culprits who made up the rumours, but I was surprised that you can’t even trust the mighty ESPN……

  1. I thought it was the Daily Mirror,
What with their sports writer having close connections to Arsenal fc,
just goes to show that you can’t trust no one, especially wenger ??

    Some good news!
Sanchez and Koscielny are training ahead of the wba game, so hopefully they will both be taking part on Saturday.
