Why Arsenal must NOT give up on Champions League

Arsenal should be happy with Europa League by Sam P

I do understand the argument that Arsenal would be well advised to give up on the unlikely chance that we can still qualify from our Champions League group into the knockout phase, The Gunners have to win both of the remaining games including the one in Greece where we have never won and would need a two goal margin of victory.

As well as the growing injury list, the main worry is that we would fall just short but finish above Dinamo Zagreb and drop into the Europa League and most Arsenal fans see that as a distraction that we could really do without. I disagree.

Do we not fancy a European trophy then? Arsene Wenger has still not won one despite making the UEFA cup final in 2000 and the Champions League final in 2006 and I am pretty sure that he would like to add the Europa League to his list of honours.

This could be his and the club’s best chance because with the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, the UCL looks a long way out of our reach, as starkly highlighted by our pasting by Bayern Munich this week. So is it really better to go one more stage in that competition rather than being one of the favourites in the other?

Okay you have the added problems of playing on a Thursday but surely we could deal with that if the manager and players embraced it and went in with the right attitude. Just as they say that a cup run can help a club’s league form, I think that a long run in Europe could be good for the Gunners this season. Winnig it last season did not stop Sevilla from having a strong La Liga campaign so there is no real reason why it should hurt Arsenal either.

And if we were to miss out on the EPL trophy, it would be nice to have a European trophy to celebrate instead. Do you think we should be happy to drop into the Europa League?

    1. Maths is no joke…ask my former maths teacher….mr muncer.

He used to say…. if u fail ur test u get half an hour alone with me after school..

Not sure what that meant just noticed alot of my classmates changed after those half hours.
He probably made them do algebra

  1. guys i really wish we could have a tight defence like the one monaco had last season. If we could get one like that I assure you we would be getting to the finals of the competition each year. But how can we get one as disciplined

  2. Our squad is thin, + more injuries will likely occur whether we like it or not. It could be beneficial for out title chances to drop out of Europe this year. The worst thing that could possibly happen now is to qualify for Europa, we can’t afford to travel to Azerbaijan at thursday nights.

  3. Why do some fans think that Arsenal would win the Europa league?
Just because it is less valued than the champions league?
I’m sure that winning the micky mouse league cup is easier,
    (Cough Cough) … enough said.

  4. Exactly @fatboy gooner. These blinkered arsene ass-wippers seem to believe in Arsenal’s invincibility relative to the UEFA cup. Fashioned from what evidence, I couldn’t possibly rationalize. What utter stupidity.
Persons of more objective and pragmatic disposition should more than likely arrive at a conclusion which highlights the enormous vulnerabilities regarding arsenal’s chances vis-a-vis the contenders.

  6. If we can’t even get a draw against the likes of Zagreb and Olympiakos, what hope of getting past better opposition to win the Europa League?

Europe is one of the major reasons I want Wenger out. I would love to win the league, obviously, but the Champions League is what I want the most because Arsenal have never won the European Cup, despite being one of the greats of English football.

Arsenal have become a complete joke in Europe under Wenger. Our squad gets stronger each season, more money to spend each season, yet the performances and results just get worse. Last season I thought we had hit rock bottom, but now, we pretty much have. $ games played, 4 poor performances, 3 defeats. We’ve been a disgrace when you consider how good our squad is, and the money available. It’s last season that still proves how bad Wenger is – we couldn’t even beat an injury ravaged Monaco (weakest team left in the competition), with the squad we had! If it was over a one off game, maybe I could accept it as cup shocks do happen from time to time. Bradford beating Chelsea, Middlesbrough beating City, Wednesday beating Arsenal, are recent good examples. But to lose to Monaco over 2 games, was absolutely shocking, and we’ve just continued where we left off.

Is our European form a surprise this season, well of course not, because we have the same manager. I expect AKB’s will disagree with what I’ve said. So if Wenger isn’t to blame, then clearly our squad isn’t good enough, which begs the question…why didn’t Wenger properly strengthen the squad? One cannot blame the injuries or the lack of squad quality whilst at the same time, fully supporting Wenger.

  7. Why do our British players get injured a lot? Is it a coincidence??
Wilshere, Ramsey, Walcott, Welbeck and the OX all injured at the same time?!

  8. I’d really want our progression into the next round but the most important thing to me now is the league. Can’t imagine having any other injuries on our players now.
