Why on earth does Arteta have faith in David Luiz?

The David Luiz conundrum by Shenel

What possessed Arsenal to purchase David Luiz at the end of the transfer window in 2019 will be a question many Arsenal fans are still asking to this day. His appearances for the club have been like a player who has been sent to spy on another team and cause their demise.

Despite popping up with an odd goal every now and then, Luiz has been nothing but a liability to Arsenal! His latest mistake coming against Manchester City in both teams’ first game back after the Lockdown period. He is prone to a few red cards as we have seen from his footballing days but it is clear to see that Luiz is not the best fit for Arsenal.

He will always be known as a Chelsea player but when he wears the Arsenal shirt he is a completely different person it seems. His continuous lack of concentration and connection with his teammates is causing us all sorts of problems, having been known to be the team that cannot defend at the best of times, with Luiz in the side it seems those problems increase 100% more.

Arsenal without Luiz seems strong enough in defence, but with him not so much. This was clear to see against City, for 22 minutes of the game Arsenal were in control and looked like they could take something away from the Etihad, but two injuries in the space of minutes meant Luiz had to come on to replace Pablo Mari at the back. His appearance consisted of giving away one goal from open play, giving away a penalty for City’s second and receiving a red card for the challenge on Gabirel Jesus leading up to the penalty. All in all his return after lockdown lasted less than 30 minutes.

Fans assumed and prayed this would be last we saw of him in an Arsenal shirt but somehow Arsenal and Luiz had reached an agreement that would see him extend his contract for at least another year. Bring on the confusion and angry rants from many Arsenal fans!

Luiz can be a strong player when put in midfield but Arteta has been using him as a defender, could the plan going forward be that he uses him as a defensive midfielder? Could the contract extension have come because of the injury to Xhaka? But with Xhaka now back quicker than expected, signing Luiz up for another season seems like another big mistake to add to the long list for Arsenal.

While other teams are smiling at the thought of playing against an Arsenal team including Luiz for another season, many Arsenal fans are frustrated at the thought of yet another season full of possible defenceless errors costing the team a place where they belong.

Why does Arteta have faith in Luiz, Gooners?

  1. I think he loves the hairs. Asked him to extend, make it longer so he can see dem hairs fly in slow motion as we conceid a goal.

  2. May he misses his young days when he had long hairs as well. Before to Rangers and there in his early days.

It must be a hair connection in the air!

  3. He must love his engaging personality, because it certainly cannot have anything to do with his performances on the pitch.

  4. Very mysterious on the part of Arsenal to give Louis an extension based on his performances on the field. The only logical answer could be his guidance/advise to the younger players of the team in the dressing room based on his vast experience. Hope it remains at that and he does not take to the field. He could be player cum Assistant to Arteta.

    1. Good idea gfl but maybe non- playing assistant to Arteta would be a better move.
From what I’ve read it seems the rest of the players love and respect him. Perhaps he could lighten Arteta’s workload by being there to console those not picked, maybe explain the reason why and encourage them to keep up the hard work in training and look forward to the next game.
Maybe he can deliver a good pre-match battle cry and fire the players up. I would think he’d be more emotional than Arteta and so better equipped to do this.

  5. On a serious tip, he needs him as support in the team. His professionalism and leadership helps Arteta and reminds him of himself. He has respect for his career as well. All fare but he simply can’t be our first CB choice, nor second or 5th.

Chambers, Holding, Mustafi, Sokratis all ahead of him. He brings character and leadership but cost us too many goals.

To cost us a game because of his contract not extended was wrong and even more so to give it to him after such a debacle he caused.

He should have been left out team and let go for that and first for not being reliable as a CB anymore!

Mari started because of that shitty attitude of Luiz, got injured few minutes on the pitch…

Arteta should have done as he did as a player, start in his first club Glasgow and do one or 2 full seasons before to move to a club as Arsenal. Actually Everton after Glasgow then Arsenal, as a player…..

He simply can’t pick a team which tac tic is based around it vice versa..

Guessing and getting but lucky. It was not at all an easy game nor win, we were in danger many times. He should be making all these mistakes and experimenting elsewhere first or U23. See that in Lampard & Zidane!

With next 4 games coming up, his overall record will be poor and inaceptable, instead Kroenke gives him good old Luiz and injured Mari!

Kroenke knows we will be behind our old courageous captain, he can save money, get richer…That’s why he got him in first place. Use our hearts, love & passion, so he can hide, collect and mock us…

  6. Cant agree more at the present point of time. If rumours are to be believed, Arsenal are in serious pursuit of Dominic Szoboszlai, Phillipe Coutinho and Thomas Partey. We have to make statement signings next season and tell the rest of the PL that we mean business. Cronkey must awake to the reality.

    1. The phrase ‘if rumours are to be believed’ is one of those ridiculous sayings that cannot be believed.
Saw Arteta laughing when the question of Partey came up.

    2. We could just trade Lacazette for Partey, and if Aubameyang isn’t interested in signing, trade him for Coutinho, trade Mkhitaryan for Kluivert (I’m not really sure how good he is, but he should be an upgrade in Mkhitaryan going by rumours), Recruit a striker (Cavani, or Icardi maybe, if they won’t cost too much) or play Martinelli and Nketiah up front (I suppose Martinelli wouldn’t need too much time to find his rhythm in that role). I believe with this signings we’d be serious contenders next season. COYG!!

  7. As a little boy Mikel Arteta never got the chance to see the circus. He never got the chance to see all the fantastic animals and, especially, the funny guys, the clowns! He never saw Charlie Rivel (born in Catalonia), the greatest clown of them all. And now, when he have his own clown in the team, of course he want to keep him. For as many years as possible. The new one year contract will be followed by another one, and another one, until the end of time (for Asn’l). Clown Luiz is a dream come true for boy Mikel. Clown Luiz, the error prone, or should we say, “the error prawn”?
