Why so few Arsenal players at the World Cup???

Why so few Gunners at the World Cup?? by Neil Watson

As I watch the World Cup I’ve been conscious of the fact there are incredibly few of our squad there compared to other premiership teams. Aside from Three or four we have hardly any, yet I can name loads of City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs players.

Is this a glaring example of how poor our squad has fallen over the last four years? It’s conceivable by the time we get to the quarters we will have no players included in the starting line ups of 8 teams, or 88 players. That’s staggering when you think about it.

Does it mean we have been scouting in the wrong countries over the past few years, does it mean players who have come to us have fallen behind their fellow countrymen or something completely different?

There’s an irony in that we sold Giroud for less than 20 million because we bought a fellow Frenchman for twice that amount yet he is currently on a beach somewhere in the world while Giroud is playing alongside the most gifted youngster in the game. That’s right, he didn’t even make the squad!!!

I don’t think it’s necessary to buy the best players throughout the team in order to succeed but I think the fact that all the top prem teams have at least one potential World Cup winner in their squads means Unai has plenty of work to do. Fortunately I believe he actually will create some greats for us before the next World Cup and we will have a greater presence than an erratic Swiss and a couple of bench warmers!!

    1. Yup, Arsenal’s lack of involvement in this World Cup showed the club’s mismanagement and corrupted mentality

Arsenal used to have one of the best youth development systems for young English players, that made Ashley Cole, Ray Parlour, Tony Adams and Martin Keown successful. But in the last ten years, that academy has not produced any English player that can come close to their quality

Snatching other school’s products (such as Fabregas, Bellerin, etc) is a good move, but a big English club like Arsenal should set their foundation in English players. That’s why Emery’s plan to build his team around British players like Ramsey, Chambers, Maitland-Niles and Nelson would be good for Arsenal’s future

  1. Some of the players we have don’t play for powerhouse countries. (Aubameyang, Miki, Kolasinac).
And some players have struggled under the chaos of Arsenal last season and didn’t get picked (Lacazette, Bellerin, Mustafi). World Cup players isn’t a real measurement of club anyways. Chelsea still have Hazard, Willian, Batshu, Cahill, Courtois, Kante in and they were almost as bad as us.

    1. Yes, Conte’s strategy has been anticipated by his opponents in his second season. If their new manager has new approach, they could be one of the contenders again, because of their players’ quality

I hope Emery can surprise the other teams as well

  2. Torreira’s dad said

“I want the best for my son and I also know that Arsenal showed a lot of interest in him,”
“It’s not done, neither is it official, because he hasn’t signed anything, but there ’s a great chance that Lucas’ future will be in England.
“There was no problem in the negotiations, and the latest is that as soon as the World Cup ends, he’ll go to London for a medical.”

So I guess Kev has been right from day 1 and the club really are trying to tie loosed knots.
France should knock Uruguay out please, so we can conclude it. And other than that, I think France has a big chance of winning the world cup, the only challenge I see for them is Brazil.
The rest I’m sure France will handle well.
Plus I’d like to see Giroud lifting it also

      1. I agree Sue, but this France team is so balanced from the defense to midfield and attack..
plus If Mbappe’s form stays that way, I don’t see any team beating them if he played the way he did against Argentina

    1. I don’t like his Dad saying this, it brings the possibility of a late rival. It was better when people thought it was signed, if Barca or someone comes in then we are in trouble.

      1. That is the status quo.We just have to wait till L.Torreira is done with the world cup ? then we see what happens

  3. We all know the reason “cash” you caunt the number of players who were close to getting to Arsenal but the English players are over paid and over rated. Plus the coach Arsenal Used to have was too conservative with spending money. He also did not use players like Chambers to give them a cancellation to being called to the English team. Vardy was afraid of Arsenal playing style so he stayed at Lecester.

  4. England had done two things so well in the first half. 1, defending so well. 2, play shity football. If it was them against Japan yesterday, they would be landing at Heathrow by now.

  5. The referee is a useless twat. He should have booked or sent off at least 3 players during the penalty delay.

  6. I could care less who wins this game but
Colombia has to be the dumbest freaking team
in this tournament. Barrios should of been
given his marching orders for the head but in
the 1st half and yet ANOTHER moment of
madness by Carlos Sanchez to possibly cost
    the Colombians another match.

Peckerman must be losing his mind on the
    sidelines.

  7. I think I’d have given one of the Colombians (or nasty, cheating dickheads) a slap by now.

  8. Dirty dives, taller players, speed and 3-5-2 worked really well for England

England intercepted a lot of threats with this formation and Pep used to use it at the beginning of the last season, before switching to 4-1-3-2. I am not surprised if they can go to the final with this strategy

Emery should beware of the spuds’ divers when he meets them

  9. Because they aren’t good enough
That shows that we need to sign better quality players to compete.

Right now with our 3 new signings we still look like a 6th place side.

Spurs, City, Liverpool, Chelsea, United are ahead of us

We need to get top central midfielders to get up to their level and ideally a top cb and winger(s).
Our central midfielders are not as good as Kante, Wanyama, Pogba, Gundogan, Matic
Our Wingers are not as good as Hazard, Salah, Sterling, Son, Alexis, Mahrez

We must get a defensive midfielder. If its Torreira or whoever. That is a position we haven’t filled adequately for over a decade

    1. Bottom line is at this stage of the programme we should be really pleased that we have so few there, it should give us a real advantage at the start of the new season.

      1. I didn’t want him to save any, this is about England, all club rivalries are put aside.

        COME ON ENGLAND.

          1. All club rivalries are put aside-unless of course they are a Dustbin Lid from up the road.Kane’Penalty on the shootout was 10 yards offside.Trippier’s should have been disallowed because of the offensive tattoo on his arm and Dier’s should not of counted because he is ugly(but not as ugly as Deli Ali).Other than that we played rubbish and got through.Sweeden will be tougher than people believe.

            1. Quite right Phil, no one’s as ugly as Dele Alli! Gross! I still can’t bring myself to cheer on those 4 spuds, so I can’t put club rivalries aside… first & foremost I’m a gooner ?

  10. This English squad isn’t better than previous ones, if not sh*t even. They play nothing close to great football, most especially in the final third -very mediocre. They got quite lucky with James’ absence too.
I just can’t wait to see a team who finally brush them apart. Unfortunately, Sweden do not look like one.

  11. Xhaka was bad today and helped Sweden score the winning goal
What was Wenger thinking spending £35 mil on him?

  12. The players did badly last season, no doubt about that.

What a silly question to ask, honestly?

It was one of the worst finishing over so many years.

AW n the Board are the cause.

  13. Lets just be honest with ourselves. We are an average team. We have overhyped, overrated, overpaid and over pampered cuties for players.
    Simples.

  14. England are sure to win the world cup…kane is world class

only fifa and the referee can stop England

    1. England is overrated.
I am not sure that they can beat 10-man Brazilian or French team.y

      1. You’re spot on bruh.
Nothing to take away from Kane’s abilities, but he’s been arguably way below wc standards albeit leading on the scorers’ board. Hat trick against Panama or the pk’s??
England are riding their luck big time.
