Will Arsenal get lumbered with Danny Welbeck this season?

Arsenal have been trying to offload a number of players this week, and Danny Welbeck is one we have struggled to get over the line so far today.

The forward has been linked with West Ham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle to name only a few this month alone, but the Hammers and Toon appear to have ruled themselves out of such a move.

There is under two hours left to find him a potential suitor in England, and could well have to  try and find him a move abroad, but the player himself may not wish to move from the country.

Danny joined the club from Manchester United with Louis Van Gaal telling him that he was surplus to requirements. Jose Mourinho has since come out to insist that he would never have sold the England international had he had the choice, but that hasn’t helped us to find him a move this month.

You would have thought that he would have plenty of interest in his signature, but it could be possible that his wage demands are a problem for any prospective suitors.

Do we pay Welbeck too much? Could he still play a role under Emery this term?

  1. I repeat we only made one bid for Dembele which we a loan bid.We can hardly afford to pay him how much more buying him permanently.
Our loan bid was rejected because they only wanted a sale.Barca were willing to do a deal for an amount totalling £130m but we can’t pay.
They would be use that money to buy another top top midfielder probably a younger player e.g Pogba.

    1. That was false news @kev

Ornstein has stated that any “Arsenal bid for Dembele” news is completely false

As usual, you were just shooting news from different sources here and there, but thanks for giving us a little hope in Arsenal’s current situation. Your false news were fun to read

      1. What I’m trying to say is we wanted to take him on loan but Barca outrightly rejected that proposal.
They would’ve be done a deal at £130m.
Ornstein may have been right at the end but behind the scenes we were trying for players especially wingers.Even he knows that we were trying to sign at least one player. For e.g it’s known Guedes rejected us after we agreeing to pay Pig’s asking price.

        1. Kev, just for a laugh, tell us where you get your news from. I mean, are you sports journalist? D’you work for Arsenal Football Club or d’you spend all day boringly surfing the Internet or even maybe just pull your comments out of the air. Does some mystery figure like the invisible man who refuses to give you a name phone you with the information because after all of your failed predictions you really are just taking up space on this site and becoming rather boring.

          1. Peiple just wont undestand somethings
The window is over.Lets move on.Im tired of all this and so are we all.

            1. No answer to Kenny I see Kev? Could it be you don’t have an answer? But you are spot on that we are all tired of you.

  2. Yes but on the bench for EPL and some part in the cup games.. moreover he stayed for 3Weeks in Russia with some 15mins to show…

A blind man may be or is important on the day of mud house building-African saying from Langtang.

    1. …its quite a loaded word “lumbered” particularly when used in the context it was – amusing on the one hand and worrying on the other. He’s with us now so let’s put away the negative energy, if we wish “team arsenal” well then implicit is you wish “all” the players to perform well; also with all the emphasis now being put on our “stamina” and “pressing” game who among our team has a better pressing game than Welbz? Not many.. so in the months ahead we’re gonna need “that guy”.

  3. Arsenal are very lucky to have
    retained the scoring machine
    that is Dan Welbeck.
In fact Dembele has been quoted as saying
“Welbeck is a true genius and I could not compete with him”.
Dembele was also scared off by the prospect of being
criticised by DT” and “Troops” on Arsenalfantv.

  4. I’m surprised that we could ship Perez out, always felt Perez, Danny, Jenkinson, Campbell, Ospina, and Akpom would be difficult to offload.

Someone already mentioned but anyways Ornstein says that the Dembelle bid is not true, he does say we like the player and would have interest in bringing him here but like he said last month Arsenal’s business is finished. What about that big opportunity?, I think he mentions something about it or else it was the guy who wrote the article, so we’re left wondering, they did say we are open to a big one but that doesn’t tell us much.

Surely we are looking at a CB after offloading Chambers, Holding and Mavrapanos would scare me if we needed to rely on both of them at crucial stages, am being honest not trying to upset people. Then the starting two, people say Mustafi is a little slow, but he’s paired with someone slower. I don’t mind a lack of pace once they have it where it matters, this too scares me.

  5. Of course Welbz is staying, 40 minutes left and not a sniff of a story regarding him on sky.
Best window for me has been Wolves and Everton, who have also now “signed” Usmanov. spuds at present only Prem team have not made a signing.
    .

  6. Welbeck will be excellent in the pressing game. Use him wide one side to shield the back line. We are leaking goals and need a speedy player to help shut down one side.

The lumbering player is Sokratis. As slow as the #26 bus.

      1. JJPawn and waal2waal, I support your sentiments. Danny Welbeck is a good squad player and Arsenal has to field teams in 4 competitions. As you both rightly point out Welbeck will give 100%, but his major issue is his wastefulness in front of goal.
From videos thus far, Emery and his coaching staff are setting up shooting drills against Arsenal’s goal keepers at each training session. Hopefully Welbeck and Iwobi will spend most of their training having shooting practice or learning how to play in Lacazette and Aubameyang.

  7. The most important player needed now is a third choice experienced CB which we cant afford to mis out now.Chambers was loaned and i think Mavroponos is not yet ready to compete on the high level. We dont need experiments here like what Wenger used to do.

      1. Unai should be a different coach with a good approach and he should remember how he was able to win Europa league and his time with Psg. He had good players sitting on the bench waiting for their time to play.

  8. I think it was a very foolish move to loan chambers out and not bring in a replacement! Holding is the inferior of the two and less experienced, he should have gone instead.. bizzare to say the least! And not to have signed a winger which is blatantly obvious that we need is criminal! Some good things this window, some bad, some bizzare.. the bad Alex Iwobi getting a new contract ? The old one should have been put through the shredder along with Carl Jenkinsons still can’t believe he’s an arsenal player! Just terminate his contract! No confidence in that backline this season it scares me Sokratis and Mustafi, back up Holding and Mavropanos deary me! Kroenke out!

    1. I agree with you.Holdings has no experience to be a third Choice CB.It will look foolish to let Chambers go out on loan and retain those young kids for the future.Could it be that Stan used Money to but Arsenal and for now he cant afford fee for player signings???

  9. When you look at other teams they at least have 4 experienced CB’s who can cover day in day out and that’s why they are doing well because they are not short of options. If Unai doesn’t add any player of such a kind,It will be clear that him and his Wenger have no plan for this club.

    1. …ye of little faith.
Given the chance to cultivate chambers or mavro i would choose to develop the latter. Fortunately we’ll retain both as chambers can at some point be called back. im happy for man-mountain mavro who i believe won’t disapoint.

  10. Good signings but Chambers may be costly….injuries and suspension to players should be factored in….

    1. Emery doesn’t know this league, there is a reason teams want huge squads. His experience is in less physical leagues, not as tough as it used to be but end to end is draining. Guendouzi might end up playing CB at some stage, or back to Elneny. Keown made a good point about all these players being new signings to the coach, I’m guessing Bould has yet again failed to have a say, surely he has ideas on what went wrong and who to keep or target seeing as he does know the players.

      1. Right on… the EPL would crush players from PSG. Neymar would not last a season in England. Nor Messi. Ronaldo was a battler and a great one, so he likely the best of this generation.

We needs another two CBs who are serious. What happened to Wenger’s target from last season?

  11. Getting Ospina and Perez out on deadline day isn’t bad. I’m sure Welbz will actually contribute so it’s fine he stays at least until January so we have make some type of profit off of him. Arsenal haven’t got the right personnel to have a good defense though and I anticipate this is again where we will struggle.

    1. The only player we are fighting for is a CB.Mustafi and Sokratis are similar interns of style of play. They like attacking and going forward.

      1. doesnt look like there is enough time for any deal to get done with anybody anymore. We’ll be stuck with them until January. I don’t see Sokratis/Mustafi working out at all and I’ll have to hope either Holding or Mavro step up immensely. It seemed Chambers was destined for a big role this season, but suddenly he is loaned. Think that was a mistake and Arsenal have made an error in judgement with the pecking order of CB’s. Should’ve pushed for a Holding loan.

        1. This is the same old Arsenal signing second tier players.I think Arteta as a coach was overlooked due to his stance when it comes to transfer of players.

          1. The budget was far too low for a club that should be trying to get back to their best. 70mill only gets you one top player in this market. Emery managed to sign 4 with that money. quality and experience varying. None look to be bad buys quite yet, but it’s not enough for somebody to transform the team into title winners for sure, and i think it was barely enough to challenge for top 4. We’ll have to see. I understand the low budget partially. We have so many fringe players on high wages that need to be gotten rid of. We’re still cleaning up the mess left by “you know who”. This is why Ospina and Perez gone is actually a positive. And hopefully in Jan we can rid of Jenkinson and Welbz too. Unfortunately things are about to get more complicated when Kroenke takes full control of the club and we get no access to the funds Arsenal has, and Stan most likely starts using Arsenal profits on his other teams. Ugh… a very uncertain future awaits and I just have to hope it’s positive.

          2. Best Arsenal business this window was not getting Arteta as Coach. Can’t believe that was even a possibility, simply shocking. No other team anywhere was interested in him despite Pep talking him up.

        2. Holding v Mavro is a healthy competition because although chambers is on loan – its the former who if he fails distinguish himself will face the prospect of being shown the door.

  12. Fulham signing Vietto from Atletico on Loan!
He looked bloody good against us recently and scored.

  13. The aim of Unai might be to finish within top four which to me seems like a weak goal for such a big club.We need to aim at wining the league like our opponents. If that’s what Unai is targeting, then every year he will be fighting for being at top four and start having excuses like Wenger

    1. The manager just walked in this season, had a limited budget, made some rational signings and now will get to work. “Getting back” to the top 4, I believe is a sound stepping stone towards “re”-building the squad and its confidence. To think after all of the recent changes at AFC that the main goal should be to win it all and snatch the trophy from Man Chity, you are delusional. Be realistic, AFC is NOT in the hunt for the title, if they were, you’d see big $ and big names coming in.

For me, I am just glad the club has made some reasonable signings and targeted the areas everyone has been moaning about. No, this season will be a “let’s see what the new manager could do” season – the following season will be the season where we could all determine what the actual future intent of the club will be. If same old same old next season, I will be with you 100%.

      1. Unai Emery has a record at Sevilla of developing teams with a limited budget capable of competing against Barcelona and Real Madrid. As Martin Keown has stated Emery has started with a new squal which he has to assess in greater detail. That’s noting that Emery at his interview presented a detailed dossier on all players in the then Arsenal squad.
Notwithstanding our tight fisted owner, Stan Kroenke, you can be sure that Emery will drag every bit of ability and effort out of the players he coaches. Thosr who don’t perform will be shown the door.
Let’s show patience and get behind Emery and the team.

  14. Why do I get this feeling that we are about to start another season short of requirements again. I know the Dembele headlines have been dominating lately but if we truly wanted a winger wasn’t Leon Bailey good enough? Not to mention the LCB position and our most available senior CB’s are damn near identical in playing style and position. Sunday’s opener will surely clarify our game plan moving forward with what we have.

  15. where are you chiza old chap ?. surely you could not be in hiding . after all , you were right about so many things . why dont you come on and accept the congratulations.your predictions are so scarily accurate , you could make a decent living out of this game.

  16. A centre back pairing of Socratis and Mustafi is scary. They are liable to get torn apart by the other top six sides starting with Man City.I,m surprised Arsenal didn’t go for L emina of Barca who has just signed for E Everton for £28m.He is the physical type of stopper Arsenal need, great in the air and quick.

      1. Yeah but we as tax payers are paying not only for their stadium but also the running of it! Disgraceful star of affairs.

    1. No way West Ham has more money to spend than The Arsenal. Though I do share your frustration because you would think we just built a new stadium or something. If we did however manage to double our income with adidas then this will truly be Emery’s bedding in season with real damage being done in the market from then on.

  17. its odd and risky of emery to loan off chambers but It wont make much of a difference. i rate Holding slightly higher than Chambers or at the very least the same as him.

We need a CB who is better than chambers, holding, sokratis and mustafi, so i hope our defense holds up until january at least

  18. We are going to be passed by Everton and maybe even Westham… with one owner. In two years there will be another coach as the owners make money like they do in the US.

We will be left with Wenger’s partial re-build next year. Most others brought in will be of little use. Too old and slow for the EPL.

  19. Sometimes you take pieces from other puzzles and they just cannot fit no matter how hard you try or too many chefs in the kitchen spoils the taste of the food.

In the case of Arsenal we bought 5, which are in the senior team with the majority of the squad still present, we still have Jenkinson, Campbell and Welbeck, all 3 I think can be helpful in the campaign this season both defensively and offensively.

I know that all 3 can still go due to other transfer market being open, but it would be unwise to thin our squad further with so much competitions ahead, in all honesty i would even be tempted to play Campbell at left back because he his sound defensively.
