Wilshere admits lack of fitness but likes new “hungry” England

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere started England’s 2-1 win over Turkey but only played an hour before being replaced by Jordan Henderson. He admitted that he still some way from being match fit and is hoping to come through a whole game unscathed to prove he should make the final 23-man squad for the Euros.

But the important thing is that he is back in contention and Jack will certainly be fresh and “like a new signing” for club and country once he recovers his form and fitness. And he likes the new young England team that played on Sunday. “It felt good to be back. It’s a special feeling and I’m happy.” he said.

“There’s a lot of players I haven’t played with before. It’s a different team – a good team, a hungry team – and it felt good to be involved in it.

“I feel I am ready for 90 minutes now, I wouldn’t be here otherwise. I have played a few games now and I think the next step for me is 90 minutes. As each game goes on I feel better and better.

“Medically I’m fine now. I have been training for five or six weeks. Maybe I need that five or 10 per cent of match-fitness but we’ve got two more games (friendlies) and hopefully I can get that.”

We all know that Roy Hodgson believes that Wilshere is a special talent and is worth risking being in the squad despite his lack of game-time, but will the Euros just arrive just a little too early for our terrier-like midfielder?
