WSL stats show Arsenal Women have no top goalscorers or assisters.. by Michelle

Arsenal Women managed to finish 3rd in the Women’s Super League 2022-23 season – not a bad place to finish given that their entire campaign has been blighted by injuries, including a number of season-ending injuries with four of those being significant ACL ruptures, requiring surgery and long recovery times.

Finishing 3rd in the WSL secured Arsenal qualification to the Women’s Champions League 2023-24. And our Gunners have had what can only be described as a good season, with their 3-1 win over WSL champions Chelsea to lift the Conti Cup, setting new WSL attendance records including a sold-out Emirates Stadium when they reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against Wolfsburg.

But there is a glaringly obvious problem within the Arsenal Women camp, outside of the injury narrative, and it’s a problem that has left them trailing WSL winners Chelsea by 11 points and 2nd place Manchester United by 9 points at the end of this seasons campaign.

The leading goal scorer for Arsenal this season happened to be a midfielder, which is acceptable of course – Frida Maanum scored 16 goals across all competitions and won Arsenal’s Player of the Season. However, I believe the team still needs additional attacking prowess and increased goal-scoring capabilities from their forwards. This is where the most noticeable gap between Arsenal and the top 2 teams emerged throughout the season.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa all have WSL top goalscorers and assisters in their ranks. Arsenal do not have one player in the WSL goals and assists stats tables below.

Yes, Arsenal have been without top talents Beth Mead & Vivianne Miedema since November and December 2022 respectfully and yes, Arsenal failed to secure a prolific goalscorer in the January transfer window in Cloe Lacasse and Alessia Russo, but Arsenal’s first-team forwards are still 6-strong without Mead & Miedema..

Arsenal need quality up-front, of that there is no doubt. Who do you think they should be looking at bringing in? Do you think WSL top goalscorer and England internataional Rachel Daly would fancy a spell in North London?!
