Arsenal Debate – Who to choose as our next captain?

Who should be the future Arsenal captain? by RC

Many fans believe that Mertesacker and Arteta are both no longer good enough to succeed at Arsenal. The lack of pace that the pair have has proven to cause our defence problems. The pair are very intelligent footballers, and there has been very few games without at least one of them to lead the team. If these players are sold on, not only is there an issue of replacing each of these players, but there is also the risk of losing a large amount of mental and leadership skills that they brought to the side. My personal view is with many fans that our captain and vice captain are not of a league winning standard, but the question then is, who would we make captain?

Sanchez and Chamberlain have been our best players this season, however due to their flexible roles and positions as well as their individualism it would be unwise to pick either of the two. Ramsey has captained Wales, and though he has recently upped his game, his desire to score may overcome his awareness on the pitch that he once had.

Szczesny is a loud and large character but do we cement his position in the goal and risk a loss of form that we have seen many times from the young Pole? Who would you all choose to where the arm band?

ADMIN COMMENT – Looking at the Arsenal squad as whole there is not one player that really stands out as a leader, except perhaps Laurent Koscielny. He is in the ideal position to marshall the defence, but his achilles problems may lead him to be unavailable for only half the games in the future.

Jack Wilshere has often been touted as a future captain, but he is hardly ever out of the treatment room so yet another risk. I can see Calum Chambers eventually becoming the boss, but right now he is much too young and inexperienced and needs to earn the respect of his colleagues.

This is definitely not an easy question to answer…
