Arsenal forward confirms new deal is close

Olivier Giroud has revealed that he might be able to announce his new contract in the coming weeks, despite rumours that he already had.

The striker bagged the only goal of Boxing Day’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion, and that was Giroud’s first league start of the campaign.

Olivier returned late from the summer having played a role in helping France reach the final of the European Championships, and Alexis Sanchez excelled in his absence.

The Chilean was given an extended run as a centre-forward, but this week saw the return to first-team action for the Frenchman.

Giroud has now revealed that Wenger has explained the situation to him when it comes to regular action, and added that a new contract is on the horizon, but the reports of him having signed one already are untrue.

“People have been saying I have signed a new contract,” Giroud said. “It is not true but maybe soon.

“I came back a bit late from the Euros and it was nice for my body because I could rest but not good for me because the team was doing well and another striker was doing well up front.

“This season has been difficult because also I was injured for a month and a half so it hasn’t been easy.

“But it is all about keeping the focus high. Always keep working hard at training. I was speaking with the boss, we had a couple of discussions together and he explained to me why I hadn’t played too much until now.”

Giroud’s goal at the weekend kept us in touching distance of our rivals, with each of the them winning also. This win also ended a run of consecutive losses, and could well give us the impetus to go on a winning run.

Is Giroud a key member of our squad? Does he deserve a new contract?
