Arsenal have their eyes on a new right-back?

Debuchy Set To Leave – What Do Arsenal Do? by AT

Reports emerged last week claiming that the Arsenal star Mathieu Debuchy was looking at leaving the club in January in order to get more first-team action and boost his chances of making the French squad for Euro 2016, and Arsene Wenger has now confirmed the player’s displeasure and admitted that an exit may be on the cards.

Speaking on the possibility of Debuchy leaving next month, Wenger said: “It is not impossible that he leaves. We will see.”

In my opinion, I think the former Newcastle star is likely to force a move away from the Emiates. After being his county’s first-choice right-back for the 2014 World Cup, even ahead of Bacary Sagna, the possibility of not even making the squad for the Euros is perhaps unacceptable for a defender of his calibre, and understandably so!

Now although Arsenal’s stance on the issue will obviously be to try and retain Debuchy, the club will have to consider alternatives as the player looks determined to leave. Speaking of alternatives, we have Calum Chambers who can play at right-back, but is the Englishman dependable enough?

Personally, I wouldn’t take the risk. Clearly, full-back is not Chambers’ best position as we have seen last season and his lack of pace often leaves him exposed whilst playing on the flanks. Should Debuchy leave, we should get an immediate replacement for him. Besides, we’ll have to go in for a right-back in the summer anyway, so we might as well finish up an early bit of business.
