Arsenal linked with £36m wantaway Argentina star

Although January seems a long way away, there are still many Arsenal transfer rumours flying around. Arsene Wenger has made it clear that he intends to strengthen the defence in the upcoming transfer window, but the Daily Star reckons that Arsenal are intending to bid for the Benfica and Argentina star midfielder Nicolas Gaitan, who has a £36m buyout clause in his present contract.

Gaitan was the star of the show for Benfica last season as they won the domestic treble in Portugal, and last week he emulated Lionel Messi by scoring two goals for his country in a 7-0 rout of Hong Kong. At 26 years of age the brilliant South American has decided that he is ready to step up to a bigger league and has refused to sign a new contract offer with the Portugese club.

This means he will be one of the hottest properties in the coming transfer windows and I am sure that Wenger would be interested in yet another top-class midfield addition to the Arsenal squad, as that seems to be the only players he looks at nowadays. The question remains that do Arsenal have more than enough of that genre in the squad already?

In fact IF we had all our midfielders fully fit it is not even certain that Gaitan would be a regular starter, and it is really time for Wenger to buy some competition for the defensive midfield and other defensive positions before buying more midfielders!
