Arsenal set to sign Russian international midfielder?

Despite all the Arsenal transfer rumours linking us with top-notch expensive stars like Riyad Mahrez, Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette, this latest news seems much more believable given Arsene Wenger’s track record of buying improving young stars at a reasonable cost.

Aleksandr Golovin is only 21, but has already played 12 times for the Russian national side, and made 36 appearances while helping his side CSKA Moscow to come second in the Russian Premier League. He may be unknown to Arsenal fans but is considered to be a rising star in his homeland. When asked yesterday about whether Arsenal were close to signing his client, his agent said it was “nice information”, but refused to confirm and deal. ‘Golovin at Arsenal? Nice information,’ said Oleg Artemov.

‘But so far, no comment.’

This possible transfer looks to me like a classic Wenger-buy, especially as the price quoted in most papers is a paltry £10million which seems remarkably cheap when you consider he has a contract with CSKA until 2021.

What worries me is where on Earth Wenger can fit him into the team, with Ramsey and Xhaka forming a budding promising partnership, and with Coquelin, the Ox, Elneny, Ozil and Reine-Adelaide already competing for places in our crowded midfield. Perhaps Wenger is hoping he will develop into a replacement for Santi Cazorla?
