Arsenal stars set sights on place in football history

Arsenal already have a long and distinguished history in the annals of the game and especially in the oldest cup competition in the world, the FA cup. The victory over Aston Villa at Wembley last May made the Gunners the most successful team in the competition with 12 wins, after the year before had seen us draw level with Manchester United on 11.

Last season also saw our manager Arsene Wenger go level with the Aston Villa manager from the late 19th and early 20th century, George Ramsay, by leading a club to six FA cup trophy wins, so the Frenchman could go out on his own if Arsenal win it again this year.

That would not be the only record, though, as no club has lifted the famous old cup more than three times in a row. And just like the achievement of the invincibles in winning the league without a single loss, no club in the modern era has even managed three in a row.

The first club to do it was London based Wanderers and they were dissolved over a century ago and the last team to do it was Blackburn Rovers who beat West Brom in a replay for third in a row back in 1886. So it would be an amazing feat if Arsenal could do it in the modern era and the players are well aware of that and they are very keen on securing their place in football history.

Calum Chambers told Arsenal Player, “I think for every Englishman it is a very memorable cup,” he told Arsenal Player. “It gives that edge to it so you want to win it even more.

“It would be an amazing achievement [to win it for the third time in a row] and I’m sure everyone will be everything to get there. I wouldn’t say we are discussing it but we are thinking about it. Anything in the cup can happen, it is not always straightforward.

“You have to have both short range and long-range goals. A long-range goal would be to break records, win trophies and do well, so I think everyone strives for that.”

Of course everyone is taking the Premier League title as the most important goal this season, but could the beckoing hand of history help Arsenal to win another FA cup trophy?
