Arsenal Tactics – Should Wenger try 4-4-2 sometimes?

Maybe Arsenal should start playing with two strikers! By SK

The 4-4-2 is a purely attacking formation for any team that wishes to go all attack! The formation creates space for an all out striker, who will be supported by a creative striker who will be the link between the midfield and attack! The supporting striker or number 8 as most of us know it, will basically be the initiator of an attacking move; he creates the space for the top 9 to score goals but in most cases, he scores the goals himself!

This season, Arsenal has been playing with a lone striker upfront, who is usually supported by a pair of wingers, who either assists the striker to score or contribute with goals themselves. While this system has worked many times for Arsenal this season, it has yet to totally create the all out attacking team people know them for! For teams like Manchester United and Tottenham, this pattern of football has worked for them, probably because they have mastered the art of making it work or they have a striker who fits perfectly well!

Arsenal may need to switch back to the 4-4-2 system of playing, if they wish to end games scoring as much goals as they were known for in the past. This system in my opinion, can unlock any type of defence. In situations where we play teams who defend so well, the top 9, who is usually big and strong, should be fed with aerial balls, which he may take delight in converting to goals! The assistant striker in such a game may use his skills to unlock such a defence and slot balls into the penalty box for the striker to finish up!

Arsenal has many strikers who can be effectively used for the 4-4-2 formation. Giroud and Sanchez can fit into this system, Perez and Welbeck can also fit into this system and we may not find it difficult opening up tight defenses! What I am trying to say in essence is that Arsene Wenger should be flexible enough to know what formation is good enough to win the tough games that seems to undo us! Or is he too old to be flexible?
