Arsenal to challenge Spurs in chase for goalscoring winger

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are in the hunt to sign Quincy Promes from Spartak Moscow this summer.

The winger has been consistent in front of goal at club level over the past four years, scoring over 10 league goals in each season, notching up 55 league goals in total.

This year has been by far his most impressive, scoring 18 in his 30 league outings, and is now said to be looking to leave the club. Promes is believed to have failed to agree terms on a new contract, and is now headed for the exit door.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is claimed to have attended Holland’s friendly match against Ireland two weeks back, in order to have a closer look at the winger, but will now face competition from close rivals Arsenal in the race to sign him.

The Gunners allowed Tomas Rosicky, Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta to leave in the summer, and were expected to bring in three replacements in the same window.

They have already moved to bring in Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach, and are believed to be looking to bring more goals into the side, especially with Danny Welbeck having been ruled out with injury until February 2016.

The 24 year-old could now be in line to do just that, although most Gunners had expected a central striker to come into the fold to challenge Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman enjoyed his best goals tally in an Arsenal shirt this season, despite going on a four-month barren run. It’s possible that because of a lack of options he was forced to play too much, and his lack of goals for that four-month spell could have been blamed on fitness.

Promes has a great goal return albeit in a much weaker league in Russia, but could he the answer this summer? If we sign the Dutch international, would our one remaining signing need to be a striker or a defender?
