Arsene Wenger was asked about taking over the manager’s role for his country of birth France after leaving Arsenal, and he refused to deny the possibility.
The 66 year-old is into the last 12 months of his current deal and has come under pressure from Gunners’ fans in recent years. Supporters have grown frustrated with the lack of impetus in challenging for the Premier League title, and fans remain divided on his ability to lead the club going forwards.
Wenger has now been asked about his future, and was specifically asked whether he would consider taking over the international managerial role for France in the future.
Wenger said: ‘I am getting a bit old now to make long-term plans, for the moment I am a club manager. We shall see what happens.’
His country head into the European Championships as favourites to lift the trophy, with the tournament also being held in France.
The Euro 2016 tournament kicks off tonight with the hosts taking on Romania at 8PM (GMT), and France will be keen to hit the ground running.
Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud is set to star in attack alongside Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and/or Antoine Griezmann tonight, in what looks a highly potent forward line.
Wenger is known to hold the striker in high regard, despite a long barren run this season, and he would likely remain central to the manager’s plans should he sign up to manage his country.
Laurent Koscielny is also in the squad, while Francis Coquelin has been regularly overlooked, and could be boosted by Wenger agreeing to switch to Les Bleus.
