Arsenal’s Wilshere to start in bid to secure England place

Jack Wilshere is expected to start for England in Sunday’s friendly match with Turkey, alongside Tottenham’s Dele Alli.

The Arsenal midfielder was in a race to prove his fitness before the end of the season, and is now set to start for his country in one of two matches remaining before finding out if he has secured his place in the final 23-man squad.

Three names will need to be trimmed from the current squad, before June 1, just before the final 23-man squad take on Portugal in the final friendly before the European Championship kicks off eight days later.

France go into the tournament as hosts as well as favourites, but with the goalscoring form of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, England actually have a decent chance of making their mark on the tournament.

Danny Welbeck would no doubt have been a huge attacking threat for his country also, had he not suffered a horrendous knee injury a couple weeks ago. Welbs is now ruled out until February of next year.

Theo Walcott is another Gunner who missed out on a place in the provisional squad, and rightly so, having been hugely disappointing in 2016, and unable to persuade Arsene Wenger to start him for his club side.

England will face Turkey in the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, due to the FA Cup taking place at Wembley today.

Will Wilshere earn a place in the Euro 2016 squad? Who do you think will miss out?
