Arsenal’s Xhaka ready to build on strong 2017

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka is eager to prove his worth this season, after a mixed opening campaign in the Premier League.

The Swiss international joined for around £30 Million last summer from Borussia Monchengladbach, but started life in North London in controversial fashion, picking up unnecessary cards and hindering his side in some matches.

Xhaka did end the campaign impressively however, stamping his foot down on a first-team role following the switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation, and really began to repay the money paid for him toward the end of the season.

The midfielder is keen to continue to grow in England, and admits it took a little time to become accustomed to the playing style in the Premier League.

“I think every player needs time to adjust to a new league, a new country and new team-mates,” he said.

“The back end of last season I already felt good and I am feeling more comfortable now and want to help the team as much as I can this season as well.

“I know it has been criticised but my style of play is to be aggressive. My two red cards can be discussed, were they necessary or not, but I am hoping to have less cards this season and build on the end of last season where I already had less.

“I’m a player who likes to have the ball, dictate the play.

“The fans knew that and the club did too, that is probably why they got me but there is another side to my game as well – that is being aggressive and fighting in the duels.”

Is Xhaka the first midfielder on the teamsheet now? Does he look value for money?
