There are growing rumours that Arsene Wenger may be willing to step down as Arsenal manager this coming summer, after breaking Alex Ferguson’s record for managing the most Premier League matches. Le Prof will already go down in the history books as the coach of the Invincibles and for winning the most FA Cups with one club, and even though Man City are making a concerted effort to go unbeaten this season, none of those landmarks are ever likely to be broken in the forseeable future.
So it could be possible that Wenger is considering handing over the reins at the end of this campaign, especially if we remain outside the Top Four and end the season without any trophy at all. The Mirror is reporting this as a real possibility and claim that the ex-Gunners midfielder Mikel Arteta is Wenger’s choice as his immediate replacement and they go so far as to say that the management have already held talks with the Spaniard about the possibility.
The 35 year-old only retired from playing at Arsenal last season, but was immediately signed up by Pep Guardiola as his assistant at Man City, and we all know how his first season is panning out as the Citizens are unbeaten so far and have opened up an incredible gap at the top of the table. I am sure the Arsenal board can only be impressed with his achievement.
Also Arteta was nurtured for 5 years at the Barcelona academy even though he didn’t break into the first team. He also enjoyed 5 years under David Moyes at Everton before playing his last 5 years under Wenger at Arsenal, where he was captain and was encouraged to start doing his coaching badges.
So he has a great pedigree and is a very popular and respected person in the footballing world, but do you think he could be ready to be the Arsenal manager next season?
