Could Euro 2016 seal Vermaelen transfer back to Arsenal?

Whisper it Arsenal fans, but with the transfer of the central midfield star Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach already signed, sealed and delivered, and with Arsenal transfer rumours suggesting that Leicester City’s centre forward Jamie Vardy will soon be joining him, it is starting to look like the transfer policy of Arsene Wenger is actually somewhere close to matching the wishes of the Arsenal fans.

The general consensus seemed to be that it was the spine of the Arsenal side that was most in need of strengthening and so perhaps it will be a central defender that is next on the Frenchman’s wish list, assuming of course that Vardy is happy to move to north London and become a Gunner.

No doubt we all have our own opinion on which defender Wenger should sign, but I bet not many of you have thought of our old club captain Thomas Vermaelen have you? On the surface this might sound like a daft idea thought up by someone who has had too much sun after a few too many beers, but bear with me.

To be honest I never thought of it myself until the other day, when I was watching the frankly turgid friendly game between Belgium and Finland and I heard the commentator say that Vermaelen was set to be a first choice starter for his country at Euro 2016,. despite having hardly played any club football for Barcelona since he left Arsenal two years ago.

That has mainly been due to injury and fitness concerns though, but it does seem to have ruined his career at the Nou Camp. Having said that, there was a reason they signed him in the first place and if he could stay fit then the Verminator would be a great addition to any side.

So if he can get through Euro 2016 with Belgium and prove his fitness while showing some of the old form, how about Arsenal bringing him back to boost our defensive options? Watch this space Gooners.
